Green hopeful over SFA membership

Last updated : 25 July 2012

On Tuesday, Green claimed issues with the SPL were holding up a deal to transfer the membership to his Sevco Scotland company ahead of the start of the Scottish Football League season this weekend.

Green has no option but to accept the transfer embargo that comes with Rangers' membership, but Ibrox manager Ally McCoist has been handed a five-week reprieve and has signing targets lined up. Issues with the SPL appear to centre on the league's ongoing investigation into alleged undisclosed payments to players, which could see Rangers stripped of titles.

The probe was launched in early March and delayed for months by the failure of Rangers' administrators to hand over documents.

McCoist declared he would never accept Rangers being stripped of titles at the weekend and the situation has been further complicated by the financial crisis facing the SPL following the loss of the Ibrox club to the Irn-Bru Third Division.

But SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster has been working hard to secure the league's television contracts, bidding for the SFL rights in the process, and a solution to that issue could leave Green with no influence on the undisclosed payments probe, which centres on Rangers' use of employee benefit trusts.

Green reported good progress on Tuesday after speaking to Doncaster and SFA chief executive Stewart Regan.

He said: "I'm really hopeful now that within the next 24 hours we can have this thing signed and sealed and Alastair can start loading his players on a team coach to go up and try to win a match on Sunday."

Former Hearts pair Craig Beattie and Ian Black trained at Murray Park on Tuesday and Green revealed Andrew Little, whose Rangers contract expired at the end of the season, had agreed terms.

McCoist has also been linked with former Kilmarnock and Hibernian midfielder Dean Shiels and could have several new faces in his squad for a Ramsdens Cup first round clash at Brechin on Sunday - if the SFA membership issue is finally resolved.
