With Haydock and Uttoxeter expecting heavy rain and staging inspections
it may be a quiet Saturday. The main meeting is at Sandown and that
looks likely to go ahead as planned.
The main betting race of the day is the Ladbroke Handicap Hurdle at 3.00. This is usually a very difficult event to work out but we could do worse than put a few pounds each-way on Chivalry. His trainer thinks very highly of him but says he needs decent ground to be at his best. He can run well and is currently available at 20/1.
There are many others with decent chances including Escompteur, Monte Cinto and recent seller winner Rob Leach. I think Chivalry has the class to run a big race and will be disappointed if he is outside the first four home.
The 2.35 Sandown appears much more straight forward and I am looking for Marcel to continue his run of excellent form. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t win.
Assuming Uttoxeter gets the go ahead we will need to look for horses who can go on bad ground. The seller at 1.20 looks like a match between Mantles Prince and Tensile. They are well in advance of anything else on the official ratings and it could pay to invest in the forecast in this event.
Other soft ground specialists to look out for at Uttoxeter are Crazy Horse in the 2.25 and Ballinclay King in the 3.00. Both could run well with conditions in their favour.
