Match report of today's away win in the early game against Inverness Caledonian ThistleRangers showed why they are likely to offer a stronger challenge to reigning SPL champions and rivals Celtic this season with a convincing win at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
The Light Blues were unable to defeat Inverness in three games last season, but easily brushed them aside on the opening day of the new campaign.
It did not take long for Rangers to threaten and DaMarcus Beasley should have done better in the third minute when he was sent clear.
However, he was forced wide by Caley Thistle goalkeeper Mike Fraser and the chance was lost.
The wind was not making it easy for either side in the opening stages of the match, but it was the visitors that were dominating proceedings and they deservedly took the lead in the 16th minute through the left foot of their captain Barry Ferguson.
Latching onto Lee McCulloch's knock-down, the Scotland international shrugged off a challenge from Roy McBain before unleashing a volley that found the back of the net via Fraser's right-hand post.
Almost immediately Kris Boyd saw a header drift just over the bar, before going even closer to doubling the Gers' lead with an effort that was turned onto the crossbar by Fraser's outstretched leg.
It was all Rangers, although Caley Thistle briefly threatened when Dennis Wyness turned quickly inside the box and fired in a low shot that Allan McGregor had to gather at the second attempt.
It was, however, only a fleeting moment of worry for Walter Smith's men who ended the half strongly, both McCulloch and then new signing Carlos Cuellar causing moments of real concern for the home side.
Boyd was forced to hobble off the pitch three minutes into the second half but it did not take long for his replacement, diminutive Spaniard Nacho Novo, to make his mark.
A mix-up between Stuart McCaffrey and Grant Munro allowed McCulloch to nip in and set up the former Dundee forward whose 64th minute first-time shot from the edge of the box beat Fraser all ends up.
Caley Thistle tried to find a way back into the game, but their efforts were in vain and, with only seconds remaining, Rangers completed an impressive victory, Ferguson neatly lobbing Fraser after Ross Tokely's headed back-pass had been intercepted by the midfielder.
