Former Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara is slowly beginning to settle into his new role at Leeds United, having moved to Elland Road down in the battle that is the English Championship at the beginning of the current 2023/24 campaign as former manager Michael Beale looked to try and freshen things up.
The 28 year old Finnish international still has plenty of good friends back at Ibrox and he has naturally been eagerly watching this season play out, despite him being moved on just over six months ago. After Beale’s continued initial struggles, Kamara was very interested to see how Philippe Clement’s spell would go following his arrival, and it sounds like he has been enjoying our change of form just as much as the fans are and few of those on The Punters Page would have expected such a quick and consistent turn around.
26 games into the 49 year old Belgian’s time in charge, we have already picked up 22 wins, with only one defeat and should our current form continue through the upcoming game with Heart of Midlothian, we will have notched up ten straight victories across all competitions.
We all know there will be a few twists and turns left in the season yet, but the change under the new gaffer has been nothing short of phenomenal, and we have just retaken top spot in the Scottish Premiership table and now hold a two point advantage over the nearest challenger.
Very few would have seen that coming, even just a few short months back, and Kamara has been as impressed as anyone, and although the lines coming out of Ibrox at the moment are very much ‘not getting carried away’ and ‘focusing on each game as it comes’, our former midfielder has admitted that talk behind the scenes is obviously very much different, and one old Rangers team mate in particular has a specific dream wish for the title this year – fully lift it in front of the fans so they can truly share in the moment.
It is a dream that Kamara would love to see happen as well following the time he spent with us. As fans will remember, Steven Gerrard drove a bargain £90,000 deal for him with Dundee after he had already signed a pre contract deal with us, and it was one of the best pieces of business that we pulled off under the former Liverpool and England legend.
With well over 100 starting appearances to his name for us, Kamara’s finest memories are the role he played in helping us to the Europa League final in Seville, whilst also being an instrumental part in our own title winning season, but sadly on that occasion fans had to celebrate from afar, and he is desperately hoping that if we can now maintain course this year, that we can celebrate officially lifting the title on home soil.
“It would be great for Rangers to win the title in front of the fans. When we won, we couldn’t celebrate with the fans, but they supported us in their numbers throughout the season. I was speaking to one of my old team-mates the other day, and we were both hoping that Rangers can do it in front of the fans.”
Having already overturned the points gap to the top spot given our poorer form earlier in the season, and now established a small advantage of our own, it could well be an incredibly memorable first season in charge for Clement, especially as we have already lifted the League Cup for the year.
Kamara did know that the destination of the domestic league trophy would likely go down to the two remaining Old Firm matches that are still to take place in the fixture list. Whilst they will undoubtedly have some final say in the ultimate league make up, and potentially hand a big advantage to one side, there are enough other games left with the points available for them to not maybe matter as much this time around.
That will depend on future results though, and Rangers will be hoping to grow the gap and take full advantage in every game that remains this year, and then maybe Kamara (and everyone else) will have their wish granted.
