Rangers have rocketed a staggering 165 places in less than four years in UEFA’s club coefficient table.

The Light Blues were languishing in 206th place in the summer of 2018 when Steven Gerrard swept into Ibrox.

Rangers made an ill-fated return to the European arena 12 months previously when they were humiliated by Progres Niederkorn.

Even Aberdeen were looking down on them, albeit in 192nd position, but the Hoops were in 47th position having just qualified for the Champions League group stage for the second season in a row.

But there has been a dramatic change in those three and a half years with Rangers overtaking every other SPFL team.

Clubs are awarded two points for a win and a point for a draw in the group stage with four points for winning the section and two for a runners-up spot.

Gerrard helped restore some much-needed pride in Europe for Rangers after their time in the continental wilderness.

After negotiating four qualifying rounds they qualified for the Europa League group stage in his first season as cltic joined them in UEFA’s second tier competition after crashing out of the Champions League to AEK Athens.

After that first season, the Light Blues had shot up to 94th position - overtaking Aberdeen who moved up to 177.

The mhanks remained in 46th place the following season after reaching the Europa League last-32 where they lost to FC Copenhagen.
But they have now dropped to 49th while Rangers sit six places above them after a win over Sparta Prague that booked their place in the Europa League knockout stage.

The pedo-harbourers suffered late heartache against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, losing 3-2, and go into the inaugural Conference League.

The Ibrox club have Gerrard to thank for their rise after two successive knockout stage qualifications and he put them on the brink of a third with Giovanni van Bronckhorst completing that job in his first game in charge.

And that win helped Scotland consolidate their position of ninth in the country coefficient table as they remain on the coattails of Austria.

This season's champions will almost certainly be granted an automatic place in next season's Champions League group stage, with the Premiership finishing last season ranked 11th.

It means that as long as the winner's of this season's competition also qualify via their domestic league, the champions will go straight into the groups.

So will this mean an automatic place in the champions league the season after next as well?

The job the previous management did was way beyond expectations when it came to Europe. Possibly unlucky not to be even higher.
Hopefully GvB can continue to deliver, early signs looking good.

Over time the European record and 55 will be Gerrards legacy, long way from time being a healer after Sunday. However I do think we will reflect on his time with joy, long way from it at the moment though as I still think he is a lady's front bottom
I keep reading that, and I do agree to some extent, I still struggle to forgive Souness, and still have a niggling about it. Thankfully Walter was there to stand tall, now it’s Gio’s turn to keep us at the top.
That said Gerrard’s record in Europe for us was way above anything I expected.

Aye but the team is shite, the captain is never a captain and the centre half (Gerrard's favourite) is pish as well

We are on track to overtaking the likes of AC Milan at this rate. Saying that, we could end up facing AC Milan if they go out 3rd, which they currently are in this position.
I'd be happy with that. Massive name, very big test but not out with the realms of possibility that we could win.

On our day and on our A game we could beat a good few of those teams that sit above us. We could easily be in that top 30.

Gerrards legacy will absolutely hinge on Gio, much like Smith with Souness. I look back on Souness fondly for starting the revolution but certainly don’t worship him, hopefully Gio is the man to really kick on a new revolution of domination

The results we’ve achieved in Europe in the last 3 seasons have rarely been so consistent. The previous management team did a tremendous job in Europe and secured the club much needed revenue in this regard.

Looks like the Scottish Champions next season have a great chance of automatic qualification to the 2023/24 Champions League as well. Ukraine can no longer overtake us so it would take Russia, Serbia and Belgium to accrue enough points this season to push us down to 12th. Pretty incredible and largely down to Rangers.

Excellent reading but can you please edit the boak inducing "Hoops" to something more apt? "Likes Young Boys of Glasgow" or something.

Please? B-D

Malmö debacle aside Gerrard and his team exceeded expectations in Europe and can only that him for getting us back to where we belong.

No the point being we were 200+ ranked because we weren't involved for 4 years. Starting from where we were progress was inevitable.

Progress was inevitable but the previous management team did wonders for us in Europe, that can't be denied.

The odds were stacked against us climbing up the ranking in such a short space, remember we had as good as no seeding the first couple seasons.

Bert Kassiesa has us as 39th and them at 50th when you account for the 2 points for 2nd, meaning we have earned 38.25 points not 36.25. AC Milan and Red Star look like they could be heading out so we overtake them. UEFA obviously don't add that to their ranking until the groups are officially finished.

Also it's interesting to note the 10 year coefficient that determines some payments from UEFA.

Every year, for the next 6 years, anything we add will be increase our rankings and we will get higher payments as we move above other teams in the competitions we play in.

This year we will receive a million Euro's for our "10 year coefficient", a couple of years ago when we were a pot 4 team it was about 250k.

49 - 41 = 6???
