Bluenose now an offensive phrase apparently

Who decides and how is it decided on what is racist and sectarian and what isn’t? It wouldn’t bother me if there wasn’t this bullshit hate crime bill overshadowing it all.

It’s the idea you can be punished because someone high up decided the word you use is now a form of hate speech

LIBRARY researchers have produced a readers’ guide to offensive phrases - including terms like “jock”, “blue nose” and “19th Century Terrorist”.

Boffins made the 257-page guide to highlight potentially derogatory slurs users may come across in books, websites and archives.

The National Library of Scotland’s document, named Inclusive Terminology, lists “outdated and harmful” language.

Among insults considered sectarian are “hun”, “proddy”, “drum basher”, “soap dodgers”, “Orange b*****d” and “Jungle Jims”.

It explains why terms such as “zombies” and “manky mob” are offensive and even gives politically-correct alternatives.

The handbook’s authors said: “The meaning of language has changed over time, being largely dependent on historical and social context and subject to individual preferences.”

The document lists offensive terms relating to race, sexuality, gender, disability, religion and beliefs as well as class.

It refers to the UK’s colonial past with dozens of examples of racial slurs.

A large section focuses on Scotland, mentioning terms like “sawney”, an old derogatory term for Scots.

The guide is currently a first draft but bosses at the library in Edinburgh hope to expand it in the future.

A spokeswoman said: “We constantly review how we describe the collections in our catalogues so people can find what they’re looking for.

“Discriminatory language hinders this process because most people don’t use that language to search our collections.

“Most of these terms don’t feature in our catalogue descriptions - but it’s important for everyone in the sector to be aware of and address discriminatory language.”
Oh Shit! I’d better find a new name then.

No guys. Rules. It’s ok if you call yourself a bluenose but if anyone else uses such an offensive term then you should be offended and complain to your mp, MSP, councillor, MSM, everyone and they will now be offended on your behalf and call it out. ;)

By that criteria I’m amazed ‘Boffin’ isn’t offensive.
Give it time. They update it regularly according to the spokeswoman, oh dear, did I just assume someone's gender there? Christ I'm sorry, wait, can I say Christ? Ach, I'm away for a big fattening fry up, oh wait...I give up.
:)) :shh:

So, some university types with sweet feck all else to do had an idea thrown at them and with too much time on their hands went completely over the top and came up with this utter shite? Lol

Words are all about the context they are used in, it's stupid to ban words - because you can never ban context. Look at words like 'spastic' or 'retard' both words were perfectly legitimate words that are now classed as offensive and we no longer use them to describe people with those afflictions.

We changed them to 'special needs' and 'differently abled'. And now people use those terms as insults. It's what we do.

These arseholes need to understand that George Orwell's 1984 was supposed to be a warning, not a manual.

This is the dangerous road I feared we would be going down.
What next?
Cheering your team scoring a goal might upset some so ban that.
God Save the Queen being banned because it upsets atheists.
Might sound a bit far fetched , but think back 20 years or so and some of the stuff we have now is bizarre.
But in 10 years time this will all be normal... unless its stopped... but that looks very unlikely.
All down to socialism at the extreme end.

I am a person of a Rangers supporting persuasion, loyal and true
I'm proud to wear the red white and blue
Strong as a rock with standards high!
I am a teddy bear till the day I die

"It explains why terms such as “zombies” and “manky mob” are offensive and even gives politically-correct alternatives."

I'd love to see all these PC alternatives. And 10 years down the line they'd probably be deemed offensive as well.

Yes, but who pays them!
My guess is that finding cures for cancer, dementia, MND, and the like, can wait because our Government feel the need to spend money on such drivel.
Well that's another thing I sometimes think about when I see these things, how much good could have been done if the time, effort, manpower, and money had been focused into something positive and worthwhile.

Wonder if very loud chanting of “you’re just a fat orange bastard” on sky right now is deemed offensive. Maybe Boydy just “loves it” as Andy Walker likes to say.

A lot of those phrases should be reframed so they are considered anti-British Protestant racism.

Septic fans have successfully reframed terms that just mean celtic supporter as racist.

Play them at their own game. Even through that anyone with half a brain cell knows they are not racist, just play them by their own rules and say they are anti-British Protestant racist terms.

Ok so how can bluenose be offensive if theres probably been no Rangers supporter in the entire history of our club that’s been offended by it?

It’s a term of endearment, towards our demographic so how the feck did it get on the list?

Why is hun fine on here when any remotely offensive term about them is auto filtered into horrendous patter?

I use it often especially with the filter here. Quite an old term I think. Rhyming slang for tims.
.... and part of their old ground was called the jungle! Who would take that as offensive? same as bluenose - I still have several plastic ones stashed when handed out at Ibrox during 9iar I think.

I had one of them, was it part of a charity or something? Some of the old merch and products were class.
