Stampede outside cameroon match

Sadly, whenever you read early on there have been a number of deaths, you always then get updates with the numbers rising.

It feels like there have been a number of these tragedies in African football.

Awful news.

That tournament simply has no redeeming features whatsoever and folk still want it to be respected. Sorry. Not happening.

If they want then it move it from Africa and have it properly regulated in an environment with proper infrastructure, facilities, safety, vetted officials and everything else.

Absolute cowboy show out there.
The crowds have been poor til now, even for the hosts.

All you need is to announce a delay to the kickoff, to drive safety.

Madness.

At least six people were killed in a stampede outside an African Cup of Nations football game in Cameroon, officials have said.

The stampede happened as crowds struggled to get access to Olembe Stadium in the capital of Yaounde to watch the host country play Comoros in a last 16 knockout game in the tournament.

A regional governor, Naseri Paul Biya, said there could be more casualties, as a hospital in the area said at least 40 had been injured in the stampede.

"Some of the injured are in desperate condition," said Olinga Prudence, a nurse.

"We will have to evacuate them to a specialised hospital."

Officials said about 50,000 people had tried to attend the match.

The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 but it was not meant to be more than 80% full due to COVID restrictions.

Cameroon won the game 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals.

Like Wembley? Or Vienna or Brondby or countless other aways.

Horrific to go to a game and not return home.

It's not just that one instance though.

It was only the other week you had officials stopping a game early after a dodgy penalty, accusations of match fixing, team buses being shot up and all sorts.
It’s a tragic incident that has unfortunately happened in many western countries since large scale events begun.

That happens every single week all over developed countries.

The first two things you mention are weekly topics on follow follow.

It’s been a complete farce from start to finish. Comoros had to play tonight with no keeper, games being blown up early, and now this.

Sad news for those poor people who were killed tonight

When you read about these things happening in Africa it's always reported as a 'stampede'.

Stampede means -
To rush wildly in a sudden mass panic.
Stampeded as if they sensed impending danger.

It refers to animals. I find it odd that when football fans in Africa are involved in a crush it's referred to as a 'stampede'.

What are you on about?

I'm on about the absolute shambles at Vienna and Brondby which on another day could have led to people losing their life.... Or the organisation at the Euro 2020 final where many thousands stormed Wembley stadium.

Anyway I probably shouldn't be so argumentative so soon after a tragedy.

Going to a game and not coming home is absolutely horrific and a lot on here have probably had a few close calls.

I found the choice of terminology very odd also. Have never heard it used in that context before, in other instances it has been a “crush”

Thats even worse if it was before the game , why the hell was the game played if people were dying

Not sure, but maybe they thought cancelling the game could have led to more trouble and crushing. Similar to why the continued playing on after the bomb went off outside France v Germany. They didn’t want all the fans spilling out in a panic.

People using 6 deaths as a go at the tournament is shameful.

It’s like saying the FA Cup is a joke after Hillsbrough.
After Hilsborough there were major changes to the British game and rightly so, I am not for one suggesting that the tournament should be cancelled however the tournament must be reviewed and serious questions asked IF it should be sanctioned as a fifa recognised tournament. This is based on the number of incidents and safety issues that hang over African football.

Strangely football is mentioned as a concern which hasn’t been updated tonight! If the government are warning you about attending a football match in the country how can they get a safety certificate by FIFA to allow it to be played their and given this report weeks ago

You can quite easily point the finger to fifa and there greed for allowing the games to be played their

RIP to the ones who passed

Of course it should be used to improve facilities going forward. But to point to a crush and say “ha I told you it’s a lot of shite daft Africans” isnt on.

Totally agree. There’s a stench of something sinister in it.

I have posted the U.K. government travel advice and it advised that it’s best avoided as trouble can flare up at any time which would indicate that this isn’t sadly unusual! Shocking and sad

Absolutely mate however that’s not what I am saying.

My point being was that in a normal world ( no covid ) the travel advice is not to attend football games which I found strange considering it’s travel advice. It points to this being a regular problem and something FIFA should have ensured was under control prior to the tournament being given the go ahead which when looking through the second article, roads and access wasn’t complete which simply should have seen the tournament moved from Cameroon to another venue and probably somewhere like Egypt or Turkey for example.

You can tell how bad their way of living is in Africa when they don’t even cancel the match after a disaster.

Please tell me you're not trying to turn this into a covertly racist thing? Just put the term into Google and the first several results relate to anything but incidents in Africa. A Texas pop concert, an Israeli festival, a shrine in India, and lastly the game in Cameroon. It's a perfectly often used word to describe any form of mass crushing/rapidly moving crowd.

People have lost their lives here, that's the issue. Not looking for something to take issue with that isn't there.

I wasn’t meaning you mate. I agree that they need to learn from this. But I do think posts in this thread have got a lot of people using it as a “told you so” towards the tournament.

I remember fans attending a Who concert being crushed and the press used the word stampede.
