Barry Ferguson slams Rangers for snubbing nephew Lewis

Barry Ferguson has accused Rangers recruitment chiefs of botching a bargain basement deal for his own nephew - and pricing themselves out of signing him in the future.

The former Ibrox skipper, writing exclusively for Record Sport , has slammed his old club for being beaten by Bologna to the £2m capture of Lewis Ferguson from Aberdeen last summer. The youngster has gone on to earn rave reviews in Italy’s top flight and has been linked with a stunning January move to Juventus.

And his uncle Barry now believes the 23-year-old will be priced out of ever pulling on a Rangers shirt. He said: “For £2m it wasn’t even a gamble. On one hand, I was shocked that Rangers didn’t show any interest whatsoever in him. But, on the other, I wasn’t even remotely surprised. If that makes any sense. Rangers have always looked on their doorstep for the best young talent. From the likes of Ryan Jack way back to the days of Neil McCann - bringing in the best emerging Scottish talent is important for the club’s identity. Lewis fitted that bill perfectly but Rangers missed a trick with him as well as one or two others.

“He would have been ideal for them. I’m not saying he would have been a certain starter but just being around guys like Jack, Steve Davis and Scott Arfield would have brought him on leaps and bounds.

“But Bologna saw something in him that Rangers didn’t and now, if he continues the form he was showing before the World Cup, my old club couldn’t even think about affording him. It’s a shame but it’s also a sign that things are far from right on the recruitment side of things.”

Ferguson’s blast comes in the same week Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson came under fire from angry shareholders at the club’s AGM for his ropey record in the transfer market.

Board members at the AGM leapt to Wilson’s defence - describing his contribution as ‘outstanding’. But Ferguson continued: “That it was described as ‘outstanding’ at the AGM is actually a cause for concern. It’s not even been close to good enough - and that’s why the fans and shareholders have every right to make their voices heard.”

I see the usual suspects dismissing Baz.

Imagine how good it would be if Baz was coaching his nephew ar Rangers.

Typical of wee Barry, running to his pals in the press.

You can tell a lot of person by the company they keep....

Pathetic from Barry.

I watched Ferguson consistently be part of an Aberdeen midfield who often struggled to reach 30% possession against us and he's been regularly outplayed by Jack, Kamara, Arfield, Davis and the rest of our midfielders.

He's never improving our team.
Regularly watched Kamara play in a team that struggled to get 30% possession against us and was regularly outplayed by Jack Arfield and Davis.
He was never improving our team. . . .

It's amazing how history rewrites itself because some italian team took a punt on him.

If he had signed for us, he would be sent off 6 times a year. He has got away with some shocking tackling against us (and other teams) that, if he played for us, he would be cautioned/sent off for no bother. His tackling is absolutely terrible, he dives and feigns injury a lot (no suprise he fits in Italy) and his technical ability isnt good enough to recycle the ball in Scotland, but again in italy he gets that extra 2-3 seconds on the ball to mask this.

The guy that knew Pedro is a farce before the board that appointed him?

Disgrace for calling out mediocracy being accepted by PLG? Really?
Suppose Miller/Wallace are a disgrace as well then.
There is a reason why Wee Barry has been know where near Ibrox or the training centre since the good guys came in.

I remember seeing him standing beside John Brown and Nacho when we were fighting to get rid of the spivs.... Haha he was nowhere to be seen. To busy running about with his celtic supporting mates

Was a no brainer of a signing to be honest. Good box to box player, gets himself into good positions, good in the air and pretty decent technically. Would have come on leaps and bounds in our squad the same way guys like Jack and Kamara have.

Also fits that Scottish box where Wilson can justify signing any old shite.

I’m not buying Aberdeen would have asked for the earth. If we’d offered 2.5m they’d have been more than happy to do business I’m sure and it would provide far better value than some of the signings we’ve made in the summer.

He does well after he moves to Italy, Barry says we look stupid. He bombs and Barry talks shite about something else entirely.

I think we should have bought him, but only after he moved and played well.

Why aim that one at Rangers?

Hundreds of clubs never signed him who, in time, might or might not wish they had.

A total nothing column. Barry is a legend and was a phenomenal player, his paper columns are utter drivel more often than not and his name at the top is all that gets anyone talking about them.

I think he is right.

I also think we should never, not ever, be giving Aberdeen £2m for any players. No matter how good they might be.

Newsflash: Ferguson has Celtic supporting friends….

Can’t all be Uber Staunch I suppose.

Where were any of the “legends” during that time? Nowhere to be seen either so may as well dig up 100 former players for that as well.

And I think he had an interview under Pedro, who was appointed by the “good guys” - depending on your meaning by good thats a questionable label - so that would have put him near the training ground or the stadium for said interview no?

Fair play if Ferguson does well abroad. But from what I saw of him at Aberdeen, there was very little to suggest £2M on Ferguson would have been good business.

The talent on “our doorstep” in Scotland is miserable. Souttar and Wright have been non-events for us. And I can’t think of anyone that mob have signed recently that’s done they a turn. Taylor maybe?

'Aye but Barry should be in the coaching team cause he get's it'
Honestly, he does far more harm than good. The quintessential captian to a generation but by %^*& he's so selfish. If he had any self awareness he'd know exactly why we didn't sign Lewis.
