Game line, not the ball. As a defending team your position is set by the medium of the phase, not the ball (penalty and free kick = 10m behind mark, scrum/ruck/maul = hindmost foot of the defending side)

As for football, look at any video of a player crossing the ball from the by line, or taking a corner; the position of players and defenders is irrelevant.

Because they’re all behind the ball in those circumstances...

Direction of pass irrelevant because it’s position of players in relation to the ball that determines them onside
