A former youth player at Celtic has been awarded "significant" compensation from the club after being sexually abused by a coach.
The Parkhead club has admitted liability for historic abuse carried out by convicted paedophile Jim McCafferty.
The award was made to the victim, who cannot be named, by the Personal Injury Court in Edinburgh.
The man claimed his mental health was affected by abuse during the 1990s.

Former Celtic youth football coach Jim McCafferty admits abuse
The victim's lawyer, abuse specialist Kim Leslie, said: "For decades my client suffered as a result of McCafferty's abuse so above all else I'd like to pay tribute to him for the courage he has shown in stepping forward after coming to terms with what happened.
"Ever since McCafferty's abuse was exposed, Celtic FC remained firm in its defence and denial of responsibility.
"However, after thorough investigations I was able to present a robust case which resulted in the club admitting liability.
"I hope the successful end to this legal action brings closure to my client and also brings hope to those who considering a civil action of their own."
The exact amount of the payout has not been disclosed, but was described as "significant".

In May, 73-year-old Jim McCafferty admitted 10 charges of indecent assault, one charge of lewd and libidinous behaviour, and a breach of the peace.
The offences were carried out against 10 teenage boys between 1972 and 1996.
He was jailed for six years and nine months. He was already serving a jail term for abusing a teenage boy in Belfast.
McCafferty was a coach and kit man for the Celtic youth team and also worked for Celtic Boys Club.
In his career he also worked at Hibernian and Falkirk football clubs.
The incidents took place in several locations across Scotland - including team showers, hotel rooms and mini buses - over several decades from the 1970s onwards.
'Legal trickery'
The move sparked anger from other survivors of abuse connected to the club.
Thompsons Solicitors partner Patrick McGuire, who is representing some of McCafferty's victims in civil cases, said: "The Scottish public can draw their own conclusions over the fact that the club tried to keep this secret and have issued no apology.
"The club need to consider the effect all this has on Boys Club survivors. Using legal trickery to winnow through abuse claims is abhorrent.
"Instead of listening to their spin doctors the club should meet with us and our clients now.
"Openness and decency is the way out of this for Celtic. We again appeal to Peter Lawell and the board to do the right thing."
A spokesman for Celtic FC strongly denied Mr McGuire's claims, including that it had tried to keep the case "secret".
"We deliberately did not comment on the news story this morning for reasons of respect for the victim of the historic abuse at the hands of Jim McCafferty," he said.
The spokesman said the settlement was based on legal advice and "is evidence alone of the club's willingness to meet its obligations".
"We did not ask for a confidentiality agreement to be signed or keep this case 'a secret', so for Mr McGuire to suggest otherwise is completely untrue. We have, however, conducted this matter with sensitivity and discretion, which we think is the considerate and appropriate approach."
The spokesman added that the club had "very clearly and publicly" expressed "enormous sympathy for all victims of historic abuse, which has occurred across many different organisations".
"We will continue to follow the proper processes, as we have done from the outset, and to meet all of our obligations."

"We didnt ask for a confidentiality agreement..."

As if this makes them fucking heroes. They didnt have to ask for one here as the player involved didnt want it made public as it's hard enough living with the shame of his abuse as it is.

Celtic really are disgusting.

PBB, I have not experienced anything as personal as you have done, but professionally I have seen & had to deal with more than most would ever consider possible.
This may seem trite but there is help out there. I can only hope that you can get the help & closure that you seek/deserve.

Celtic really are disgusting.

They didn't ask for one as, legally, they didn't have a leg to stand on. If they had started trying to impose conditions then the plaintiff might have simply said 'see you in court'. And then all the sordid details could well have become a matter of public record.

They may have asked the question and been told to piss off or their lawyers may have advised them not to even try.

I don't know the details of these actions or the evidence. However, I have been involved in both litigation and arbitration and, when you have a strong legal position, then 'see you in court' is the ultimate weapon.

Let me add ... Celtic may also have been concerned about precedent being established in court and specifically with regard to their separate entity defence. Obviously this is speculation on my part.

Thanks. I’m almost 50 and a stubborn old cant
Being the Presbyterian upstanding Protestant that I am, I try my dam best not to let them bastards get to me

Not a lot wrong with any of that, Mate. Add a few years and the fact that I wake up in the morning looking for things to get irritated about so that I am not taken by surprise, then I am with you.

Loosely translates as, " Celtic denied everything to the bitter end. Only when I backed the bastards into a corner from which there was no escape did they finally fess up. "

Thanks for your offer

My wife asked me about it tonight snd had to tell her I can’t tdlk about it. We’ve been married nearly 20 years

It’s a bit like unleashing a wild animal from its cage

FUCKING BASTARDS
What a courageos post, you should be proud of the strength you have in being so open and expressing your feelings like this.

I know from personal experience the damage and fallout caused within families, by the deeds of evil bastards like these. You have my full support and best wishes in your pursuit of justice. No amount of money can compensate for the pain you suffered over all these years, I only hope it brings you some closure and you receive a full unreserved public apology from the organisation that covered this up and denied responsibility for all these years.

As someone already mentioned, probably best not to disclose any personal information as this forum is public. Should you ever want to chat you can PM me. My family was almost destroyed by a peadophile, you will never be judged by me - only supported. All the very best.

So that photo is basically saying Kevin Kelly was part of it as well ? That's why the money went to the trophy centre

No, it's not.

There is no eveidence out there ( that I'm aware of ) to suggest Kevin Kelly is a paedophile.

However, it is beyond all reasonable doubt that he knew exactly what was going on and looked the other way.

That makes him an enabler.

I am a “survivor” pursuing a claim against CFC/ CBC/ SFA

The amount of scheidt being posted on here is beginning to annoy me and people are being misled.

No direct contact has been made to survivors from CFC. If represented CFC need to go via their solicitors

CFC have instructed Clyde & Co Solicitors to deal with the claims

Damages to be assessed primarily on the Judicial College Guidelines via psychological damages

And no I’ve not been contacted by anyone connected to CFC. Only Police Scotland have contacted me
Fair play to you my friend for posting on here,I have nothing but admiration for you in doing so,as it takes huge courage to be so open on a public forum.
I can't even begin to imagine what you have went through and endured over the year's and hope you get the justice you so rightly deserve and acknowledgment of an apology from both those that enabled and committed the heinous crimes against you.
Best of luck to you on your continued journey through life mate, you deserve to be happy and I hope you can find contentment and peace in the future.

My psychological assessment is next week. The report will be available about October.

This gets sent to Clyde & co with a valuation which depends on level of symptoms ( mild moderate or severe) personally speaking I rate it as severe. If claiming potential loss of earnings on the open market the this would be comparable to Alex Rae as our career up until 1986 was identical. Alex played with me at CBC but I never recall Alex being subjected to abuse. Alex and I were social friends also circa 1986 and went on to play with Falkirk etc. So say £5m was earned by Alex.

If the court was to award this then serious financial ramifications for Celtic FC although prospects of this head of claim are somewhat slim.

I think you're incredibly brave to be able to open up like this. Wishing you the best of luck mate.

That's just it, they haven't.

Because this boy played for Celtic, and McCafferty was an employee of Celtic at the time, they knew this was one they couldn't win. They're trying to be clever here.

These bastards will have to be dragged kicking and screaming through the courts before they finally say sorry and accept the Boys Club was part of Celtic.

They have no intention of saying sorry to anyone.
They will fight each case and quietly pay up what they are told to.
The press will give it minimum coverage then move on.

The press will give it minimum coverage then move on.

In the end, they will have to say sorry.

There's no road out of this for them. Yes, they'll continue to scream and shout for all their worth, but it matters not a jot.

They're trapped in a web of paedophilia, lies, and shameless cover-up from which there's no escape

And The Press have given this outrage more coverage than any of us would ever have thought possible.

The victims will win through in the end, and the reputational damage to Celtic will be substantial.

Everyone knew at CFC what was going on. It was a case of burying your head in the sand and “getting on with it “

That is truly shocking that you had to go through that we can only hope that there is an independent enquiry so that the truth of what went on at that rancid club can be told and that every perpetrator and anyone who knew can be held accountable for the decades hiding the truth

They don't want your sympathy you sanctimonious bastard. 'across many different organisations...'. We know what you are trying to spin. I hope you feel the full force of what's coming your way. An full apology now - although forced - would be a bit of a slap in the face to the victims after your recent behaviour and narrative. I am absolutely ashamed to breathe the same air and share the same city as this mob and thier like-minded followers. God bless and keep the victims and thier families.

This is THEE bravest, yet heart breaking, post I've ever read on here. Fair play to you mate, you have my utmost respect for posting and I wish you all the very best in your journey for closure. Looking from afar you have clearly not let it ruin your life. Any man who can keep a woman happy for 20 years must be a good all round egg

However they will never erase the ingrained psychological damages that shall live forever with me forever
No amount of money will erase the psychological damages you have suffered however the courage you have shown in coming forward will help others who have suffered at the hands of these monsters. I also believe that due to the courage of individuals like yourself in bringing these bastards to justice you will help prevent anything like this happening again to young children.

Don’t know if this has been posted before but a new victims rights bill was passed in New Jersey in May this year.

https://www.andersonadvocates.com/NewJerseySexualAbuse#tab_NewJerseyVictimsRights
The New Jersey Victims’ Rights Bill

On May 13, 2019, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed the Victims’ Rights Bill (S477) into law, effectively reforming the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse survivors in New Jersey.
An historic step forward for child protection, the New Jersey Victims’ Rights Bill:
  • Allows adult survivors of child sex abuse to bring a civil lawsuit against abusers and institutions that protected them until the survivor reaches the age of 55, or seven years from the date they discover the cause of their injuries (whichever is later).
  • Opens a two-year window in New Jersey for survivors to file cases against perpetrators and the institutions that protected them, no matter when the abuse occurred.
  • Will open on December 1, 2019 and close December 1, 2021.
Tick tock scum.
