Greg Stewart

I'll probably get pelters for this (my first thread and all) but whenever we play away on plastic shite to Killie, Livi and Hamilton, if it was down to me I'd have Stewart starting all of these games. His best ever form as a professional was playing every other week on plastic turf at Killie. He was generally outstanding and scores goals against the diddy teams.

I really think we should be using him more often against the diddy teams playing in a similar role to the one Naismith played under Walter and Ally, floating about just off the striker. Too often against the diddy teams we have one too many midfielders when we would really be doing with another player floating around that pocket between in the middle of the opposition half to draw some defenders out of place and make room for our midfielders to venture forward.

Certainly on plastic I think there is logic to play him as he's used to it and to give the likes of Arfield some rest on the bench. If it isn't working bring him off for Defoe/Jones/Barker/Ojo whoever is on the bench and switch things up.

We have a big squad, he clearly trained well and came back into the reckoning Saturday due to the park the bus style adopted against us. Unfortunately for him he will only ever come on when were struggling and need a goal and get a max of 30mins at a time

See I get that logic of throwing him on late but I'd rather use other players in our squad to change games. That first half yesterday was turgid, we should have had another attacker on the park IMO and Greg would be a decent shout. Usually I'd be happy with Arfield doing that role but we need to use him efficiently this season because it's plain to see he's running out of steam in games far quicker than last season.

Yes I know Greg was poor against East Fife but that's one game. He may well start against Livi and if he does I'll see whether I back my OP or change my opinion on this.

I think he may start on Wednesday and that worry’s me.

I might be in the minority but I'd be less worried seeing his name on the starting line-up rather than the bench. So far this season domestically we've been a second-half team anyway. In the main, our first halves in the league so far have been pathetic with the team picking themselves up a little and upping the tempo in the second half.

I'd be keen to have Stewart play behind Defoe on Wednesday and if it doesn't work chuck Morelos on after the 50 minute mark.

Hello Greg;)

What’s you opinion on dogs and cats? What do you prefer mate?

Good first post by the easy

In an RTV interview Jamie Murphy said GS had “enjoyed his summer” basically saying he was a bit over weight when he came to pre-season, which I think showed against east fife where he looked unfit. By the sounds of it he’s been training well since though so hopefully he still has a part to play this year

Greg Stewart did an interview before one of our matches stating he had been working pre-season with a personal trainer and doing a lot of running as well.

Yeh I’m a fan of him too. My worry is that the Kilmarnock Stewart was at peak fitness and the Rangers Stewart isn’t and that could affect his performances.

It was always going to be difficult for him to get much game time. He played well at Killie due to being given a key role in their side. He’s not good enough for a similar role in our side. He’s also not some sort of plastic pitch specialist.

I like Stewart. He's a very talented player. He definitely won't be first choice but he is a very good squad player. He needs some minutes and Wednesday is a good place to start. If he has ambitions of winning trophies at Rangers, he'll be hungry on Wednesday. I wouldn't judge the guy based on a game versus East Fife in hurricane like conditions.

He'll be good for games later on against the smaller teams when we are struggling for a goal and they have 10 men behind the ball. He can create and score goals in those games.

I’d like to see him feature more often. He’s well capable of making runs into the opponent’s box (like Arfield does) supporting the main striker.

I don’t think Livi will be 10 men behind the ball on Wednesday night. I expect them to get in our faces and press us and try to win the game. I also expect us to put in a good performance and win 3-0

quality player but not got that burst of pace we need out there, grew up across the road from him and remember when he was playing for our local amateur team he was still pretty slow compared to the other players, he was sent to a “fat camp” down in birmingham as he arrived at pre season well over weight, maybe thats always been a problem but im sure our club will get him up to speed in no time, would prefer him to play as a number 10 but we dont seem to use that position at all. has anyone thought maybe he was signed as a 3rd striker?

Arfield doesn't have much pace either but it's his intelligence that makes him a threat from those positions. Hopefully Stewart can have a similar impact.

His problem is that we play 4-3-3 with 3 central midfielders and no number 10 which is the position he is best in.

He's very comfortable playing narrow behind the striker, as Arfield does.

People want Arfield dropped for Stewart?

Fuckinghell.

Not dropped, rested.

Arfield has already played a lot of football this season with a lot of travelling and many hve observed on here that he’s looked jaded at times.

No point in signing Stewart if he doesn’t play in some games and a fresher Arfield off the bench for the last thirty minutes is a very good substitute to have anyway.

Stewart would walk into any team’s best starting line up in the league bar Rangers and Celtic so there’s no doubt that he’s good enough to play against the likes of Killie, Hamilton and Livi.

There's also no point in playing him if he doesn't merit a place in the team. What's he done so far that suggests he starts a QF in what will probably be a tough game?

He hasn’t had much of a chance though. Aberdeen on Saturday is a mega game too and I’m wary of players playing 180 minutes of football in a short space of time before Young Boys away.
