1963 - Real Madrid 6 Rangers 0 - European Champions' Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg (90,000)
Crippled by injuries Rangers put out an inexperienced side to face the past masters of European football. In front of a crowd of 90,000 at the Bernabeu Stadium ,Rangers soon crumpled and were perhaps fortunate to keep the score down to six, although they did miss a good chance of their own to open the scoring in the very first minute.

1984 - Meadowbank Thistle 1 Rangers 1 (McCoist) - League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg (Played at Tynecastle) (5,100)
Meadowbank were through to the semi-final stage for the first time in their history, with Rangers winning the first leg 4-0 at Ibrox.Whilst their place in the final was hardly in any danger, the game was switched from Meadowbank's ground to Tynecastle, where just 5,100 saw a 1-1 draw, with Ally McCoist scoring for Rangers.Rangers went on to meet Dundee United in the final
1985 - Rangers 1 (Cooper) Hibernian 0 - League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg (39,282)
A goal from Davie Cooper set up a frantic finish to the second leg of the semi-final,for Hibernian had won the first leg at Easter Road 2-0. Despite a number of chances the Hibernian defence held out to earn their place in the final 2-1 on aggregate

2001 - Rangers 3 (Arveladze 2,Numan) Airdrieonians 0 - League Cup 3rd Round (34,075)

1965 - my first ever visit to Love Street. For some reason the referee decided at half time to leave the match ball sitting on the centre spot while the teams were off the park. It proved too much of a temptation for one drunk who was in the shed and he got lifted after he ran onto the pitch to kick it.

The 0-6 defeat may have been bad for Rangers, but away from Madrid that evening there was a disaster in the Northern Italian village of Longarone, when over 2,000 locals were killed due to the Vajont Dam disaster.
Many of the local Italians didn't want to miss the Real v Rangers match and had crowded into local bars to watch it on television.
The final death toll was never known.

Rangers hit SIX goals for the third time in one week.
The previous Saturday saw Rangers defeat Stirling Albion 6-0 at Ibrox in a League encounter, with goals from Davy Wilson (2), Jorn Sorensen, Alex Willoughby, Wilson Wood and Willie Johnston.
Midweek saw Rangers defeat League Champions Kilmarnock 6-4 in the League Cup Semi Final at Hampden, with goals from George McLean (3), Willoughby, Jim Forrest and Johnston.

This took George McLean's total to 14 Goals in 9 Games, and Jim Forrest to 15 Goals in 14 Games.

Despite scoring 9 Goals in the previous 4 League Cup Games, George Mclean did not get to play in the Final, which Rangers lost 1-2 to Celtic.

I still think that Cooper free kick in 1985 was even better than the one in the Aberdeen cup final 2 years later.

By a mile.

Didn't Ally Dawson miss an open goal to take it into extra time as well ?
