Just found out about this annual event that Barcelona hosted and invited Rangers after our treatment from Franco's overhanded police in the ECWC Final.
The Catalans faced us in the Final of a 4 team tournament around 1974 i believe..
Has anyone have any info on this as i have never heard about this before.?

Yup first British side to play in the tournament not bad considering we destroyed the city a couple of years before.

Edit: I'm being sarcastic, I'm well aware that the city was not destroyed by our supporters.

Will always remember the banner Liverpool fans brought to Ibrox for the pre-season friendly. "Thank you Rangers for destroying Manchester" lol

That Barca personally invited us back to their city only 2 years after Rangers fans fought off the hated Guardia Civil says it all. The Scottish media like to blacken our name because of the pitch invasion that night in '72, but pitch invasions were quite common in football back then after major victories.

Hes being sarcastic because the mutants say we ran riot in barcelona smashing everything in site

Got it, thanks.

We never smashed that city up,

We were allowed on that park before the match for photos etc & then when we did it at the end we were attacked. It has to be said that a fair amount of bears responded & attacked the police in response, but I didn’t see one example of bears smashing the city up to be fair.

I was at that tournament, the trip was organised by Cross Travel (Harry Hynds) and I seem to recall the trophy was in the shape of a Spanish Galleon. Mind you I could be wrong as it was 46 years ago!

Even that mob ran onto the pitch in 1967 to celebrate. The difference was that the Portuguese police on horses didn't attack them with clubs for doing so, as the Spanish equivalent did in 1972.

Does anyone know the dates of the games we were involved in? I was in Calella, just up the road, in August 1974, but sure we played Dundee in the league Cup when I was away. Any help would be good bears.

Exactly. Franco & his dictatorship reacted much differently BP.

I did see & hear some mad things in the stadium but they just weren’t prepared for the response from the bears to their action. We were a tough bunch in those days & didn’t take to their bullying.

I worked with an old bear years ago who told me all about Barcelona and how it took him and two of his mates about a week to drive to Barcelona and about another week to get back.

He told me the Spanish Police could not believe it when the Rangers fans regrouped and started to have a go back at them outside the stadium after one of the younger fans got their head split open by them.

Thst would be an epic thread all on its own based upon bears recollections from Barcelona. Probably been done before.

All white kit.

I get saddened as i get older that more and more younger fans become ignorant of our history and achievements such as this tourney.
I remember walking passed Tom Forsyth a few years ago and the younger fans with us didn't have a clue who he was.
How to do this though?
the much wanted museum as a start???

I had the programme for this. Barcelona's 75th year anniversary tournament. Cruyff had just joined Barca from Ajax, who were European champs. Bilbao were fellow separatists. We were, and still are, the most successful club in the world so naturally invited.

As an aside I still reckon the reaction of the police after the ECWC final was purely political. Franco hated Britain and 25k fans arrive in Catalan with many waving union flags so the authorities must have felt it was like an invading army. For further info it is worth noting it was not the local cops but Franco's specialists who got involved.

I had the programme and the cushion from my seat from the Barca game. They handed you a cushion as you went into the ground , what a souvenir, it had the full Barcelona badge on it .

Problem was they expected it back after the game the sight of the wee Spanish guy running after thousands of Bears trying to retrieve them will live with me for ever.

Correct Tom.

And their behaviour before & after the game we’re totally the opposite, so it meant that bears were conditioned to thinking that getting on the park, and then their behaviour went to the other extreme.

It definitely happened. We played two matches in consecutive days. Graham Fyfe played so well he earned the sobriquet Johan Fyfe
Correct, I didn't go to the tournament but two of my mates who we went with to Barcelona with went to the tournament & had a great time.
All the talk was Johan Fyfe as apparently he scored a cracker

Graham Fyfe very much falls under the unfulfilled talent for me. He genuinely looked to have all the tools to make it, but it never really came to fruition.
