Neil McCann picks his greatest XI

The former Hearts, Rangers and Scotland winger Neil McCann looks back on his career and selects the best 11 players he played with.

Goalkeeper – Stefan Klos

This wasn’t tough because I believe he was that good. Klos was a different animal to what I had ever seen in terms of sheer steeliness, will to win, professionalism. He was just horrible in terms of training. You wouldn’t go near Stefan in training even if the challenge was 60-40 in your favour. He wasn’t the best kicker in the world, but as bravery and shot-stopping goes he was unbelievable.

Right-back – Fernando Ricksen

I’ve never seen anybody burn with such energy. Fernando just didn’t stop. We used to say to him he must have had a bowl of Smarties for his breakfast, he was just bouncing. He was a fierce competitor, and a brilliant teammate. You want someone to be tenacious in the full-back area, a good defender but plenty of energy going forward so he gets the nod ahead of Jackie McNamara.

Centre-backs – Craig Moore and Lorenzo Amoruso

At the time when we were going toe-to-toe with Celtic, you needed strong men that liked to battle. Celtic had Bobo Balde, Johan Mjallby, Larsson was terrific in the air, John Hartson, Chris Sutton – just big, physical guys. So you needed to look at your teammates and know they could battle. As a partnership Moore and Amoruso were outstanding, but different. Amoruso was physically imposing, but could play. Moore was aggressive, bordering on nasty, but a calming influence as well and was one of the guys Klos could roll the ball to and he would find a midfielder.

Left-back – Arthur Numan

One of the best players I’ve ever played with. A great captain and leader. He was very calm and used the ball well and about training and the dressing room, as a professional, he was top class. Dick Advocaat put Barry Ferguson in to room with Arthur to get him into good habits.

Dutch internationals Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Arthur Numan impressed McCann at Ibrox
Centre-midfield – Barry Ferguson, Giovanni van Bronckhorst & Claudio Reyna

This was a really tough decision. You could pay Claudio Reyna anywhere, and he wouldn’t do anything too fancy but he was just a brilliant footballer. He had a knack of drifting past people and he played a huge part in winning us back-to-back titles. He played right-back at times for us as well and didn’t look out of place. Giovanni had a fantastic left-foot, a thunderbolt of a shot and he was powerful despite not being big built. He was just a wonderfully gifted, balanced footballer.

Fergie was the central figure in that midfield. Barry would take the ball anywhere, under enormous pressure. He was brave, I’ve seen him bossing Lothar Matthaus when we played Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and he was just a winner.

Attacking midfield – Ronald de Boer

As a winger myself it’s strange not to have any in the team, and I played with Andrei Kanchelskis and Theo Walcott. But I’ve gone for one in behind the two because I like to have two strikers. I think Rangers got Ronnie on the down because his knee was shot to pieces. So what he must have been like at Ajax and Barcelona is scary. He was as strong as a bull, so powerful to hold people off and he scored some great goals for us.

Strikers – Claudio Caniggia & Rod Wallace

I’ve gone for Wallace because he was the deadliest striker I played with in terms of finishing half-chances. Rod had the ability to find spaces and was in the right place at the right time. He was in his early 30s when I was at Rangers and after training he would put discs down and do fast feet finishing drills. The amount of goals I saw him score just with these five, six-yard bursts to get in front of people was no accident.

Claudio was an athletic specimen. I wouldn’t even hazard a guess at how many cigarettes he smoked a day. But he was just absolutely shredded, and over 10 or 15 yards he was electric. He was so calm, and went ice cool in and around the box. I know Maradona talks about him in his book as an animal, and he always found space. Claudio would make this noise when he wanted the ball, and he would control it with his studs first and roll it. Every time. He was just brilliant.

After he left I remember him getting abuse from the west Enclosure, where I had my ST then, he was warming up for Hearts I think. Really disappointed in this as his goals got the 0-3 at the Nou Tramp.

He was a great player for us. Cheers Neilly.

He had a lot of quality to pick from. The strikers probably the surprise for me. Caniggia was obviously a world class player but can’t say that we seen anywhere near the best of him

That says more on the quality of team mates McCaan played with rather than any slight on those you mention.

I think my surprise is based on who I would have picked.

I must think I'm an expert :))

Neil McCann was pivotal in an time when we played some of the best football we have ever played so that tells you the level he was at

Interesting top two.

Obviously looking to play total football as not many tall guys from midfield to front.

All Rangers players. Goes without saying although on another day there might have been a space for John Robertson. Unsure how long they overlapped at Hearts?

Good team, but I'd have Mols in front of Wallace and possibly Albertz ahead of Gio.
All about opinions, gio was always destined to play top top level. We got more out of Albertz because he was here longer and is a deserved cult hero but for me GVB was top dollar

McCann was a brilliant signing for us. I rewatched the highlights of the League Cup Final we played at Parkhead against Hearts and he was easily their best player that day, he skinned our defence several times. I was even at that game and couldn’t remember that.

And as a pundit, he‘s obviously got a bit going on between his ears because he comes across very well.

Think RB was our weakest position over that period so gonna go with a back 3. Numans out of position but feel it could work.

Klose
Moore Amo Numan
Rayna Barry Albertz Gio
de Boer
Cannigia Mols

That cross for amato’s header against the scum was cracking

I don’t recall him scoring against the scum after his two goals to win the league , but He had several assists, lovenkrands in the final repeated last night , de boer header in 3-3 game just after they went 2-1 up, he even laid the pass off to the numan thunderbolt in game that was 1-1 n they are just off top of my head

Had a look at what those 11 players achieved in terms of domestic honours over their careers.
Between them - 121, also 3 players with CL medals.

Sidenote: Fernando Ricksen's Wiki page looks as if it has been written by a rabid mentally challenged. The opening paragraphs appear normal but the section on his football career is really quite damning, full of his 'misdemeanours' rather than what he achieved as a footballer. Doesn't even have an 'Honours' section on it.
Scandalous, honestly if I had the ability to edit the whole page I would.:(

I was going through the radio yesterday obviously listening to the Virus news.
Heard McCann on Radio Scotland.
He gives all his reasons for not picking so and so and it really was a brilliant half hour listening to him.
Young,English and the host were putting names to him and he would give them his reasons for not picking them.
i can honestly say its the best thing I've heard on the radio in the last three weeks.

Just read this on mu phone.
What a team.
have to say , while all this reminiscing is fun and watching the old games on rangers archives is good- god, does it make me sad at the same time.
When you see what we had, compared to what we have. oooofft

I love how some criticise a professionals choice when that pro played and trained with these choices for years...
