Rangers ready to swoop for St Mirren’s Vaclav Hladky and complete Ianis Hagi deal

Rangers are looking to sign a back-up to Allan McGregor, and a move for St Mirren’s Vaclav Hladky is likely this week.

With Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick both being freed by the club, the Light Blues are searching for cover for former Scotland internationalist McGregor.

Robby McCrorie will return from a loan stint with Livingston, but Steven Gerrard wants an experienced keeper for the domestic and European campaigns that lie ahead.

And while Saints boss Jim Goodwin has pledged to do everything he can to hold on to Hladky – whose contract with the Buddies is about to expire – the 29-year-old Czech is very much the obvious option.

His form – an impressive 10 clean sheets in 30 Premiership games in the 2019-20 campaign – coupled with his imminent availability, has drawn attention from both sides of the border.

Before the last transfer window, he himself spoke of interest from Rangers, while Celtic are also known to be admirers.

Sunderland and, somewhat more exotically, MLS side Houston Dynamo, are others who have been linked.

It is the possibility of the switch to Ibrox, though, which would be likely to hold most appeal.

As much as McGregor is very much the dominant No. 1, at 38 years old he is approaching the end of his playing career.

Wages would not be likely to present a problem, with Goodwin having been frank enough to admit there would not be much they could do about it if someone was to come in with a bigger or better offer.

Signing a player with proven ability in the Scottish top flight would also fit in with Rangers new recruitment strategy, with Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson and Livingston’s Lyndon Dykes other summer targets.

Ianis Hagi
Meanwhile, Lazio are not ready to give up on their hopes of landing Ianis Hagi.

Rangers have first option to buy the 21-year-old Romanian under the terms of the loan deal struck with parent club Genk in January.

They look set to try to exercise it too, with reports in Hagi’s homeland stating a £4-million fee has been agreed between the clubs.

However, Lazio – whose manager Simone Inzaghi and sporting director Igil Tare are big admirers of the midfielder – are not convinced all is lost.

So much so, in fact, that even if Rangers take up their option to buy the son of 124-cap Romanian legend, Gheorghe, they would not rule out trying to land him by offering an instant seven-figure profit on their purchase.

Buying a player then selling him straight on would potentially fall foul of FIFA.

But the coronavirus crisis is liable to lead to a huge shake up of the regulations concerning this summer’s transfer windows, with many countries in a very different place in terms of their domestic campaigns.

Lazio would have the alternative, too, of hanging fire until January and going back in then to Rangers with an offer.

Adrian Mutu, the Romania Under-21s coach, knows all about Hagi, and believes an eventual switch to the Italian capital would be beneficial for his development.

“I like Hagi Junior. At his age, it is normal to have ups and downs,” he said.

“He played some good games in Scotland, and I think that showed he is well on his way to growing.

“I think he could do very well with Lazio. Inzaghi likes to play with a lot of pace and strike from deep, and for me that is a style of football Hagi Junior could adapt to very well.”

Genk paid Vittorul Constanta £4m for Hagi when he was just 19.

However, while he has impressed as a player of genuine potential, he was unable to hold down a regular first team place with the Belgians so is being allowed to move on.

Hladky has been rumoured since about january on a bosman. i haven't seen him personally but some of the chat in the press and on here suggests he is of good quality. makes sense. replace Fod with a capable keeper for say 1/2 the wages. Mcrorie should be back out on loan, preferably on loan. Hoping he can go back to Livingston, he started well there apparently.

Pretty unhappy at the prospect of this, we should be signing a new number 1 rather than someone to sit on the bench

I think RM will be the next No1 but the question is whether we give him a full season on loan for development or bring him back ti sit on the bench.

I think he should be loaned out but with an option to pull the plug if AM’s fitness or form drops.....

Signing a new keeper is a no brainer

it's all about our priorities i suppose. can we get someone in that pulls off some of the saves mcgregor does? we will have a tighter wage bill than last year, why strengthen one of the strongest areas of the pitch when we have other priorities? both full back positions need strong competition, midfield needs adding to and we need quality up front. Hladky is well rated

McGregor has another couple of seasons in him no problem.

I'd also imagine we're hoping Mcrorie continues to develop into his replacement.
McGregor even at his best has clear shortcomings in his game and at his age his ability to do what he's good at can fall of a cliff on very short notice, some would say that he's already looking less agile than last season.

I don't see the benefit in making a signing like this, we should look to move forwards rather than sideways.

I cant see McGregor lasting past next season to be honest (as in season 2020/2021).

I defo think we will be looking to do whatever is best for McCrories development and getting him ready to take over from Shagger.

It’s bheast porn, another fantasy, like admin XX on Monday next week. Liars from cradle to grave.
This so called ‘rumour’ was revealed by Chris Toal
on Football Daft last week.
was it not suggested by a well sourced italian journalist/news out let? basically saying that if Lazio want Hagi they are going to have to now buy him off Rangers?

We done something similar with Boumsong, got him on a free in the Summer and sold in January to Newcastle for £8m. What a player for 6months though.

I would send Robbie out on loan again, preferably down south instead of livingston
i have to disagree, if we send him down south i feel there is less chance that he gets regular game time. having him up here means we can keep an eye onto him and he can get used to the SPFL. there's not too much different anyway between us and L1/L2 down there.

we have a young keeper coming through that needs a bit of experience at first team level, Shagger is still a top keeper and a new #1 coming in wants to be playing and costs on equal to what McGregor gets, not gonna happen!

I've been impressed with what I've seen of Hladky to be honest. Sure I saw the St Mirren Manager say, at one point, that the only thing holding him back from the EPL was his height. At 1.92m he's taller than McGregor according to Transfermarkt.o_O No idea where he got that from. He would push McGregor more than McCrorie at this point and I'd send the latter on loan again, be that Livi or elsewhere.

It all depends on who we lend him to, i certainly wouldn't loan players to any club that voted against our resolution

McGregor certainly isnt perfect but hes still the best in the league and very consistent.

We also dont have unlimited funds to strengthen every position in the summer and as far as I'm concerned hes the least of my concerns when it comes to this squad.

Invest our budget in problem areas.

Our only keeper is approaching 40 and can't pass or come out for crosses , it should absolutely be a priority.
Not this summer it ain't. Replacing him long term is something we should be working on in terms of scouting etc but every penny we have should be going towards the priority positions we need to improve in. I don't believe GK is one of them yet.

We are 100% going to need a new number 1 within 12 months, I see absolutely no benefit to waiting and gambling on McGregor maintaining a consistent level of form or fitness.

Maybe Robby McCrorie is the long term replacement but he needs a full season on loan. We address that situation next summer after a season loan.

I'd say there are priority areas before Allan McGregor. Right back, midfield for example.

I can see where you are coming from RE: McGregor. For the style we look to play his inability to deal with crosses and distribution is a problem. He also began to show his age at times last season and whilst Tavernier, Katić or Goldson were being blamed, McGregor was making errors too. He's still got qualities though.

Can't really remember Hladky tbh. He'll barely feature if signed.

If you agree that our style of play should factor into the goalkeepers we target, McCrorie is also a massive step sideways from McGregor from a long term perspective too.

I'm really discouraged by the clubs standards when it comes to GK

The above are all positions that need sorted this summer, we need to prioritise and spend wisely.

We can deal with the McGregor situation next summer and who knows maybe Mcrorie, after another season on loan, might be ready to go straight in?? He'll be 23/24 by that time.

If you're going to say that GK shouldn't be a priority, please don't say that RB is because Tavernier has been the best RB in the country by far for almost 5 years now

Not seen enough of Robby McCrorie tbh.

I like Tav and would keep him but I think.he'll be gone alongside Morelos hence why I included both positions.

Anyway I think you're being very harsh on McGregor.

Even at his prime during Walter's second spell he never came for crosses much and his distribution has never been brilliant.

But for me he makes up for that in just about every other department.
