more James McCarthy fitness concerns

ANGE POSTECOGLOU must be careful with his training demands of James McCarthy, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former England international has warned the Hoops boss McCarthy won't be able to last at the weekends if he faces too much physical work during the week.

The claims come after McCarthy suffered a knock in the 1-1 draw with Dundee United at the weekend.
Last week a report from The Athletic also claimed McCarthy was struggling with the pace and intensity of Celtic training.

Now Phillips has urged Postecoglou to keep McCarthy fresh for the weekends by monitoring his fitness during the week in training.

Phillips told Football Insider: “McCarthy is not a young player anymore and when you sign a player like that you have to manage him right. You have to do your due diligence with the sport science guys.
“If you want the best out of him on a weekend you cannot physically flog him during the week. You don’t want to tire him out otherwise he won’t be able to last long at the weekend.

“I’m a little surprised they gave him a four-year deal.

“They need to manage him now. It will be interesting to see how many minutes he plays this season.”

And so say all of us.

He looks very slow but he did get a hard challenge by Fuchs on Sunday so that may have affected him as he looked totally immobile v Utd

If he’s on £25k PW for 4 years that’s unreal.

The rumour in The Athletic he can’t cope with the training set up is laughable

Signed because of his ROI background

Will they never learn and only try and appeal to the plastic Paddy mhob ?

Ha ha he's overtraining the entire team, McGregor was running on fumes towards the end of season straight into Euros only free weeks off then boom pre season and look what happens injured already.
100%, can’t treat all players like robots. More and more of them will pick up injuries as the season goes on they way they play and apparently how much they get run into the ground in training.

In fairness, I think FootballInsider write these articles and just put peoples names to them. They've done a few on us. I don't think they've much of a clue about Scottish Football. Money for nothing for the former players.

Made sense on a year or maybe 2 year deal. A chance worth taking. 4 year deal was mega risky.

Feels like the kinda signing we would have made years back. The "if we can get him fit" type signing rarely works.

Mccarthy probably told them he'd only sign if it was a long term deal and they've went with it because they thought they were making a big signing, their recruitment policy is a complete and utter shambles.

Ajeti, Barkas, Starfelt, Mccarthy & Soro must have cost them around £20million all in and every single one of them is utter pish.

They were definitely better with him and some disco lights rather than John McGinn

There's a chance that players will rebel against his system as they're not up to the physical demands.
Could get interesting.

I would agree , I don't think Dame Edna signed him , as you say he was brought in to appease the Merry ploughbhoys .Dodgy Des written all over it.

"We're needing some traditional marketing so we'll give you a 4 year contract as long as you do an Irish accent in interviews."

His mad Brendan Rogers accent has gone now as well. He's back speaking fluent Castlemulk.
