Rangers History Classic Rangers picture thread

Is that definitely Arsenal? Unusual they never played with their white sleeves.
If I'd seen this picture without a caption I'd have guessed it was Third Lanark.

Not doubting you'll be right, before my time as my first ever game at Ibrox was against Arsenal in 1968.
Yes def Arsenal! They wore that strip brand from 1965 to 1967 roughly. As you said it was usually white sleeves.

19th March 1977. Rioting breaks out amongst the Celtic support after Derek Parlane had equalised in the late stages of the game. Alfie Conn lined up against Rangers at Ibrox for first time.
Their keeper Latchford was injured and a hail of bottles descended from the terracing. Jock Stein had to plead for calm amongst them.
Game finished 2-2

Wasn't it Parlane putting us in front and they equalised in the final minute
Cue all the held aloft Rangers scarfs coming down in unison

Aitken scored at the Copland Road end to make it 2-2 which might be the same game, my memory is a bit blurred through time and bevvy :)) But I DO remember trying to see through all the scarves in the lead up to that equalizer:mad:

Conn was one of my favorite players before he left for Spurs, I was shattered when I saw him pictured on the back of the record with BJK signing for them. He hit the post in this game.

I believe it was.
He had a nightmare in his first game against them, a 1-1 draw at the piggery when Terry Butcher scored in the first few minutes. Mojo missed 2 great chances clean through with just the keeper to beat.

This was his second game against them, and to be honest he had another really quiet match up until scoring in the last minute. Think there were a few conspiracy theories just starting to get talked about in the stands just before he well and truly shut them up!

The other old firm game at Ibrox that season was the midweek one that the filth won with a Joe Craig goal

That was the game John Greig fouled Bobby Lennox in the box and they got a penalty.
Then the ref noticed the flag up for offside, so it became a free kick for us.
Meanwhile, Lennox was stretchered off with a broken leg :D
I remember being on the subway after that game and there was a mini-battle at Govan Cross when our train pulled in to a platform full of tims trying to get on - it wasn't happening!

I remember the picture of John Greig talking to Bobby Lennox in hospital bed and a reporter said when did you know your leg was broken Bobby? Lennox just seen Greig coming into his ward and pointed at John Greig and said "When that big basturd came running towards me" Lennox then laughed different days eh

By all accounts Bobby Lennox is a thoroughly decent human being, for a tim that is B-D

Conn took pelters that day. I remember singing “Alfie’s a barrel of sh!te” to the tune of Roll out the barrel.

And, 'Oh Alfie Alfie - Alfie Alfie Alfie Alfie Alfie c**t'

I know he's one of the ECWC Barcelona legends, but I can never think of him the same way as I do the other 10 in that team.

It's petty, and no doubt vindictive, but I don't like seeing his name in our Hall of Fame. Even though by playing in 1972 he obviously should be in it.

Bobby Lennox is well liked by all in the Three Towns. The person who started it up the stuff to get the Statue for him in Saltcoats was a Rangers fan.
Lennox is old school. He’s from the times Rangers and Rattler players socialised together and although there was fierce rivalry there wasn’t the same sheer hatred. In saying that a few of his colleagues like Jim “ Dentist from Hell “ Craig and John “ Couldn’t catch a cold “ Fallon we’re and still are rabids.

This must be from around 1985. Must be a senior 7-a-side Rangers team. Anyone remember the occasion or who they played?

Curious to see Billy Ritchie in this company! He only played alongside Willie Johnston and Colin Jackson (“Bomber” signed in 1963 and I assume he and Billy appeared together).
Yes was wondering that as well until I discovered big Gas Meter was actually still playing at that time.

I don’t want to derail this thread totally but Bobby Lennox was a Celtic player who I did not detest. He was and is a Celtic man and I have no problem with that because he was essentially a fair player who caused us a load of problems. The only exception to this I can think about was his late challenge on Gerry Neef at Parkhead in March 1970 but all in all, he seemed a decent guy who never rubbed our nose in it when his team were in the ascendency.

Super on the day he moved to Rangers. He was late for the photo shoot, Ibrox was closed and everybody including the media had went home, so got a passer-by to take the photo. :)

Don’t want to be a killjoy but is this one of those stories that gained status over the years.
If it was the day he signed for rangers surely he would have been in the stadium to sign his contract, so why was Ibrox closed?
Anyway if it’s true it’s funny, just can’t see it.

Sorry mate, just a wee joke and Ibrox certainly was not closed.

I made it up for a just bit of fun and a laugh.
