You are disparaging their sacrifice. They weren't stupid. They weren't lions led by donkeys.

Until conscription in January 1916 the British Army was a volunteer army.

If you bother to read the letters and memoirs of the soldiers themselves there's absolutely no doubt the vast and overwhelming majority of them went with their eyes open to defeat the threat of German militarism.
 
In no way was it my intent to dispararage their sacrifice. In fact their courage and scarrifice I believe to be inspirational .

I disagree with you in that I believe they were “Lions led by Donkeys”.

Too many mothers and wives at the end of it all were left with nothing but The Kings Penny.
