With the debate on the Andy King thread about why he’s being signed, thought it might be useful to list the squad with the players recognised as being playable in each position to illustrate where we are shortest:
1 GK: Shagger; Fod. We’re fine.
2 CB: Goldson, Katic, Helander, Edmundson. Very strong here to the point where I don’t mind which 2 start.
1 RB: Tav, Polster, Flanagan. Back ups weaker than Tav but Ok
1 LB: Barisic, Flanagan, Halliday. Need a regular starter here.
3 mids:
2 x mid: Davis, Jack, Kamara, Aribo, Docherty. Fine for the general midfielder roles.
1 x mid with goal threat: Aribo. Arfield can play here but works better in the front 3. Think we are short here and that’s where King might be being lined up.
1 Left forward: Jones, Barker, Arfield, possibly Hastie. We are well covered here.
1 right forward: Ojo, Arfield, Stewart. Feels a bit lighter here but OK.
1 centre forward: Morelos, Defoe. Both exceptional players though you might want slightly more cover.
Getting King makes sense as it is actually one of the positions with the least cover.
Other than that, only left back is really needing recruitment. A winger that offers something different might be useful. And a third choice striker could be useful with Morelos vulnerable to suspension and Defoe to injury but it is a bit of a luxury.
