5 subs rule set to be in place next season?

Story on The Athletic (paywall) but the gist is that it is expected IFAB are set to announce imminently an extension to the ‘temporary’ 5 subs rule to cover all of next season.

Believe it’s up to individual leagues to opt in as was the case with the temporary measure.

Not a huge fan myself as I do think it does change the strategy of a game but as a club with usually a larger squad it may benefit us compared to most others up here.

Edit - for those not aware the rule is maximum 5 subs per team at 3 different times in the game plus another additional chance at half time. Bench size also increases from 7 to 9.

Will be bad for us on two counts

1) when teams tire we hope to make more of a breakthrough if struggling to score
2) more players who kick our players about can get taken off when on a yellow/had a good kick
Realistically it should be better for us as we have a much stronger squad so we should be able to take advantage of it. I think it should stay at 3 as 5 is far too many for competitive games.

Have to agree with that. It’s so obvious seeing someone trying to be a hard man, booting our players all over the place, eventually get a yellow then substituted.

Correct . This is manna from heaven for Scottish cluggers who send players out to kick and when booked now can just be subbed also waste more time and break up play . Between this and VAR the ebb and flow of football is being killed off .

You're still only allowed 3 windows to make subs.

I assume it's still going to be the same format of you can only makes changes 3 times like normal but sub on 5 players?

Don't really buy into the narrative that it means more players will get to kick our players. We have a bigger squad than every other team in the league bar the scum so in theory should have more chances to win games with subs.

People don't actually think there could be 10 seperate occasions to make subs do they? Ffs :D

They don't even that much for friendlies :))

Don't see this being to our benefit. Many of our games are already turgid due to timewasting and gamesmanship just gives the opposition an extra opportunity to slow everything down

I can just imagine how frustrating it is going to be when Kilmarnock are beating us 2-1, they have been timewasting all match, it's 80 minutes and they still have 5 subs to make.

Except it doesn't. You are still only allowed 3 opportunities to sub players.

This

Think it was Hamilton 2 seasons ago, the game ended with them having 7 booked players on the park.

If introduced in Scotland, the SPFL should lower the threshold for a "failing to control your players" charge caused by too many bookings.

I've always thought that football should try a sort of rolling subs idea. Not meaning like in ice hockey or American football where you can change an entire team in one go but where you work within a set number of changes and a player can return to the game even if he has been substituted. Works in Aussie Rules quite well but of course there are a lot more players per team (and the field is fùcking massive)

Having said that, since the return of the games with the 5 subs I'm not so sure about it now. I think it was Dean Smith the Aston Villa manager that made the point in one of his press conferences that it simply benefits the bigger clubs more in that they have more quality to choose from and can simply swap like for like without a meaningful dip in quality. Hadn't thought of it in that way but he does have a good point. The 3 subs did level the playing field a bit.

Was this not introduced because teams were rushing back to try to complete their seasons? Not like we have that problem here.

Yes think this is primarily aimed at the leagues which restarted and will therefore have a shorter pre-season going into next season, so IFAB are still citing player welfare concerns as the justification.

Don’t think there would be anything to stop it applying here if it is wanted, although you are correct in that we really shouldn’t need it in this country.

It's an unusual situation in that there are out of condition players playing in June and July.

For a normal British season three is fine.

With the extra subs and water breaks in the EPL BCD it's been utter pathetic to watch...the ball being in play for about 15mins all game players bumbling off slow when subbed taking an age for a free kick to just pass it back 5 yds. It's unwatchable and 5 subs makes no difference as it's already snails pace.

Nobody wants it, but if it is to be in place this is where the SPFl/SFA should be thinking of the development of the game in this country.

Why don't they make a rule that the additional two substitutes have to be homegrown, academy trained graduates? Or in whatever form "playing youngster" has to be called.

That is one way to ensure clubs are atleast trying to aid the future of the game.

It's not perfect, but surely fans would be happy for this to be the case, it then rules out any suggestion that the bigger teams (really us and them) have an even greater advantage etc.

If anyone is actually concerned about their health why isn't it 11 subs? This is just a way for EPL clubs to keep a couple more of their millionaires happy. It's never going to change back.

For those worrying about our opponents using this to waste time. The referee will add that time on as they always do..................

There could be a record set for most yellows in a game next year. Crystal clear teams like Motherwell operate a tag team/rota approach to targeting our players.
