For anyone who likes any kind of football documentay there are a couple on tonight, running back to back with each other from on BBC2 then BBC1.

21:00-22:30 BBC2 - Shankly: Nature's Fire

Documentary looking at the life and times of Bill Shankly, Liverpool FC's legendary Scottish manager. Gaining promotion from the old English second division, Shankly forged two great sides at Liverpool, winning numerous trophies along the way. A product of his working-class roots in Ayrshire, his career in management spanned a period when football was very much the people's game.

22:30-23:00 BBC1 - Alan Shearer: Dementia, Football And Me
Documentary in which former England international footballer Alan Shearer investigates the potentially devastating link between football and dementia. Recent scientific reports from around the world have revealed that the link between football and dementia could be a result of brain damage caused by heading the ball.

If they do justice to Shankly it should be a great programme
Hopefully available to those of us overseas at a future date

Loved Shankly, would have made a great Rangers manager. His uncle Bob Blyth was a Rangers player and of course his nephew big Roger Hynd also wore the light blue. Thanks for the info look forward to watching this.

Heading is going to be banned within 10 years eh?

Could be. Brain trauma is going to affect a number of sports. American Football especially. When the lawsuits start flying in, there will have to be a reaction from FIFA, UEFA and the clubs.

A few years ago, an institute in the US went around asking for major federations of all the biggest sports to sign up to investigate this. FIFA was one of the few that didn't.

The day we lost to Berwick, Liverpool had a poor result in English cup. Players sitting waiting on a tongue lashing from Shankly. In he comes and says Berwick Rangers 1, The Rangers 0, then turned and went back out.
If the mighty Rangers can have a bad result, anybody can.

Used to love the Saint & Greavsie show.

Still got a couple of books by them (signed) in the loft somewhere.

Fuucksake I’m old.:(:D
It was a Saturday lunchtime staple back in the day. Always remember them doing a feature on Wimbledon’s rise, at the time. I remember the report talking about there being another kind of sporting spectacle making waves in Wimbledon, or words to that effect. Sure the reporter was filmed on the tube going there and I believe it was when they were in the old second division.

Fûck sakes, the Shankly one is not on BBC2 England (it’s some pish by Louis Theroux about kids who reckon they should have been born the other sex?!) and Virgin do not carry BBC2 Scotland.

Bill and Bob Shankly were first cousins of my papa on my late mother's side.

I met him a good few times as a very young boy and can still remember the presence of the man. Probably because my dad had me wound up telling me I was about to meet royalty!!

My papa and the Shankly brothers were actually raised together by their granny as their reapective parents were all out grafting to keep food on the table and coal in the 'pail'.

What a fantastic watch that was.

One of my all time heroes. An oft overused and abused word but he was a true genius and more than that a fantastic person.

Gone but never forgotten Mr Shankly.

The best football documentary I've seem in ages, great stuff and what a man he was to Liverpool

Shanks went too soon and regretted it..he left a legacy which went on to build on what he started.Hassle and disagreement from certain Directors and support from his family to finally call it a day .

An excellent programme which outlined the debt that Liverpool owe to Shankly for quite simply he made them into the force that they were and to a lesser extent continue to be .
Shankly was an old styled socialist who related to the fans and you wonder what he would make of football today where many of the top clubs in England are owned and run by people have no historical attachment to the clubs that they own (run)
It will be interesting to see what happens in England when the oil rich sheiks and Russian oligarchs either lose interest or lose their money . Where will that leave clubs like Man City for instance.
Given that Shanks took over at Liverpool fifty odd years ago it will be interesting to see what shape English football will be in 50 years or less from now

Knew you'd be on this postin about your beloved Liverpool with your RANGERS avatar.
Ah, well done you!!!

Glad to know that everyone else we can have their tuppenceworth about Liverpool but not me as I favour them to other sides.

I assume you criticise Chelsea fans on here in the same way or do I stand alone in such rarified treatment?

You might want to have a read of my post record and see how many Rangers posts there are since I last spoke on anything Liverpool related? Maybe that wouldn’t fit your theory though?

Good story bud. It’s a shame the village they grew up in is no longer there.... almost as if it never existed, despite being such a prodigious supplier of talent.

One thing is for sure, English football now is a poor imitation of what it was 50 or so years ago.

Duplicate post.

Really good documentary on Shankly. 36 years after his passing, and still revered like a God on Merseyside. I know quite a few reds who weren't born when shankly died, but still hold him in great esteem. He became part of Liverpool and Liverpool became part of him

A brilliant documentary about shankly, while watching it last night I thought after he quit Liverpool and he obviously regretted the decision.imagine what he would have done with the Scotland team in that era.

Sounds like a right good watch.
You have to wonder if the Sfa ever sounded him out after he chucked Liverpool in '74. Knowing them, probably not.

Imagine if Shankly and not Symon had been appointed in 1954.
I recall a story from Jimmy Millar who was talking to Shanks before an international at Hampden and Shankly said to him "You're playing for the greatest club in the world son".

I have the same problem. I wonder if it will be on catch up?

Shankly one was excellent. Never realised what a mess Liverpool was before he came. I suppose, like Jock Wallace, we'll never know the all the reasons for him leaving too soon.

The blazers would have been terrified of him as he would have done it his way and didn’t appear to have much time for the suits.

he left liverpool on the 12th of july, when word filtered through to the thousands who were in southport for the parade it was greeted with disbelief

Just watched the Shankly one there, it's really good watch. The word legend is used too often these days, Shankly really was a legend. It's incredible to think that 5 brothers from a village as small all went on to play professional football.
I hadn't realised until I watched it but he was actually in the same FA Cup winning Preston team as our bus convenors dad.

Will the Shankly one be on the iPlayer?

It is, I watched it this morning and Kev Keegan said he would be turning in his grave at what football was now. A great watch. I remember being at the midweek european match the midweek after he died.

Did I read somewhere that Shankly’s biggest regret was not getting the opportunity to manage Rangerss?
Fascinating documentary about a fascinating man

His biggest problem was not being ruthless. He had too much respect for the guys who took Liverpool forward and played them when they were past their best. Paisley had no problem replacing players and he took the captaincy from Thomson and gave it to Souness.
