Airdrie Sign Thomas Robert

Has anyone seen the lad play?

Maybe he's simply crap and that's his level.

Not sure his dad being a decent player means this is a 'coup'.

Seems mental. I’m sure Montpellier are probably due cross border training fees which could be a couple hundred thousand?

If he comes in, has an absolute stormer to a crazy level, even then, what’s the price in such a players from Scottish League 1? Maybe £500k tops?

Could well be crap, and Airdrie might be talking pish about Bundesliga interest etc.

But there were articles saying us/Celtic were interested, and he did turn down a 4 yr deal at Montpellier.

Just a bizarre place to go. If he's at that level he'd drop to the 4th/5th tier in France, not the 3rd here surely?

Dodgy as ...

Airdrie have confirmed that they "have been in dialogue" with Harry Redknapp.

Record Sport revealed that the former Tottenham boss had been in talks to invest in the Lanarkshire club, as he looks to make his return to football.

The 73-year-old was in discussions to use the Diamonds as a breeding ground for talent that could then be sold on to English clubs.

Now the League One club have confirmed that talks did take place, and a similar approach is being worked on with other potential investors.

Director of football Stuart Millar told a supporters' group: "As you know, Airdrieonians hit the headlines during the week in the national newspapers.

"The article about Harry Redknapp was front page and back page news, so therefore I would like to update you on the background behind it.

"We can confirm the club have been in dialogue with Harry Redknapp and his representatives.

"It was a very relaxed and informal way of exploring the possibility of working together, with a view to developing both Scottish and European players at Airdrieonians and then selling them on to larger clubs.

"We have other connections we are working on along similar lines.

"The approach was always going to form part of our development plans moving forward."

So what's the scam here? This is my best guess:-

Instead of the player moving straight to a wealthy club for a nominal cross border development fee, dodgy geezers (agents, player's family, Harry) pay the nominal fee for him to move to Airdrie instead. Then in a short period of time, if the wealthy club(s) are still interested, Airdrie can demand a larger fee which is then dished out to the original backers (dodgy geezers) that fronted up the development fee?

Possibly could work but seems dependent on the player actually performing at Airdrie, and wealthy clubs not being put off by the shit level the player is now playing at.

Certainly seems dodgy, possibly an emerging tactic to exploit the cross border fee regulation. Who knows

What do we reckon, any transfer fee goes straight in his back pocket bar nominal fee covering his wages. Bit of a risk but seems like the sort of dirty laundering deal agents love

Very weird signing but best of luck to the lad. Hopefully does well and scores the goal that puts the tramps out of the Scottish cup

Maybe he got catfished aff big Jill and Craig.

It says in the Sun that he signed a 12 month deal. So if he does really well at Airdrie, anyone who wants him can sign him on a pre-contract in January.

Which makes it even stranger!

A pretty big fuss being made over this and I'd bet that 99.9% of people haven't seen the lad play (including myself).

Has anybody actually saw him play?

Yip! That’s always a loophole I’ve thought could be exploited with the cross-border inequality. Shady agents could have a field day with it.

They're in the 3rd tier of Scottish football. It's not a platform for anything.

There have been plenty of players at that level who have moved on to bigger and better clubs...

Whilst the timing of the news that the club planned to scrap the reserves and sign Robert could have been better the hope is to reinstate the reserves at some point in the future. Infact 5 young players have been kept on with a view to playing in the 1st team this season and Robert has replaced 2 influential 1st team players who have left, including Calum Smith to Hamilton.

Maybe the guy is just total dung

Indeed. The bright lights of Airdrie made all the difference.

A villa in Provence? An apartment on la Cote d'Azur?

Fcuk that.

They might have the wine, the sun, the scenery but they ain’t got The Imperial Bar.

Imperial Bar’s a mentally challenged slop house. If he’s not going to be doing his drinking in The Masons I’ll not be happy.

They like "the wine" in Airdrie.

Crazy that they're bringing players in from these leagues with no football on the horizon for them!

How no football on the horizon? Airdrie start pre season training on the 15th, will play pre season friendlies in September, start competing in the Betfred Cup early October and begin the League One campaign mid October. Are they expected to sign players a week or two before the season starts? They released 14 players and 3 loan players and so far have signed 5 and 1 loan.

Just seen he moved to Belgium the other day, anyone know if he did that well at Airdrie?

He did well for Airdrie's standards. Not as many goals or assists as you'd think but he was levels above the competition in terms of technique.

Thought he'd make a move up to Hearts to be honest, going to the Belgian Second Division is a strange one.

Did they get any kind of fee?
