Alex Lowry - when will he be available?

If I remember right, it was projected to be about 6 weeks of recovery. That would be around this week from when he was injured so we should at least get an update soon.

I don't think Gio will use him much, hope I'm wrong. When he broke through and played well he then disappeared again. Gio seems like one of those managers who is forced into using youngsters like he has with King.

What a load of pish. Gio has given more first team chances to youth players than Gerrard ever did.

Gio gave Lowry his debut. Despite having more experienced options at his disposal and then he managed his game time after that. Mainly due to the pressure him and the team were under at the time. Gio has shown zero reluctance to play youth players, he started King at Anfield when he didn't need to. He could have easily gone for a back three of Goldson, Davies, Lundstram and started Jack or Kamara in midfield on Tuesday night. He trusted King.

People need to calm down a bit about Lowry otherwise the pressure on him is going to be immense. I’ve watched him quite a bit for the B team and he has bags of talent but I can’t see him playing every week once he’s fit. Still has lots to learn.
There's a few who should be getting more game time , stand out being McCann...

Unfortunately I believe you will be correct. He will get some game time but not on a regular basis. We all know how Gio operates and he will only use him if absolutely necessary.

Just off the top of my head, Middleton, Kelly, Patterson, Atakayi, Dickson, Houston, Kennedy, King, McPake, Mebude, McCrorie all made debuts or played under Gerrard.
Could even include Bassey if you wanted

So lets not distort the truth with outlandish claims.

Like away at Hearts last season , he wasn’t forced to play a team of kids but he did it.
He wasn’t forced to play King midweek but he did.
He gave Lowry his debut , he wasn’t forced to do that either.
I think you talk pish.:)

Would imagine he will get a couple of b team games first to build up the match fitness.

I‘m starting to think he would be a better option than Tillman who seems to lack the work rate and mentality needed

I agree with this - I don’t think Lowry gets fit and straight into the squad never mind the starting XI.

Gio feels more like a Smith or McCoist who would typically go with a good seasoned pro to play out of position, rather than trust a youngster who specialises in that position but lacks experience.

When you look at how Bassey responded, King has responded, even the youngsters in the League Cup the other month responded then I find it frustrating that Gio is so cautious but that’s what we have.

Lowry can’t come in and play 25-30 games in a season at this stage but I’d like to see him in 12-15 and then build on that.

Agree Rab.

He can go anywhere in terms of talent, but in terms of doing the dirty work that every top pro must do, and approaching his profession as a profession, he must work to sort that.

Hoping to see much more of him after the world cup.

Him and Lawrence as attacking options from the midfield after the world cup should certainly improve things.

No reason both can’t play in a lot of the more “routine” games with just one sitting.

First of all - It's sickening that Lowry has been out this long because of a totally unnecessary & criminal tackle

But I sincerely hope he's given as much time as needed to fully recover
If that means being a bit over cautious- then so be it - recuperation time is what's important - not rushing back early - creating problems later on

It probably makes sense for him to be kept 'on ice' till after the WC - even if we're all frustrated at not having him available meantime

It's not outlandish, that was over the course of 3/4 seasons. Gerrard barely played the youth and especially not with any kind of regularity. Patterson was the exception. Middleton was primarily played out of necessity in his first season due to how poor our squad depth was. As soon as we had depth, Gerrard seldom gambled with youth players.

Gio has near enough matched that inside a year, McKinnon, McCann, Niso, Fraser, Lovelace, Ure, Devine, Lowry, McAusland and Weston all handed debuts under him.

Besides, I wasn't bashing Gerrard, I was simply pointing out that Gio does play youth players and has done so more frequently than Gerrard ever did. Yet people barely slated Gerrard or accused him of neglecting the youth. Whereas they say these things about Gio all the time, despite it being completely contradictory.

More sickening was the culprit only gets a booking no further punishment, yet Jim Goodwin get 8 game ban for speaking the truth

Tbf he was available in the latter part of last season and was used very sparingly so I wouldn't expect him to be involved regularly this season either.

There are 11 names on your list,12 with Bassey, in 4 years

Excluding Diallo, Tillman and Ridvan who are of similar ages to some on the list above Gio has already used 12 youth players in less than a year:
Lowry, King, McCann, Devine, McKinnon, MacAusland, Lovelace, Ure, Stevens, Nsio, Weston and Zukowski.

Yeah this is what people miss when it comes to Lowry and it's probably why he won't play as much as people think when he's available again.

I’ve seen this mentioned a couple of times about the defensive side of Lowry’s game. Is it lack of experience, or a touch of laziness when covering or tracking?

Yeah he might have got a chance with Lawrence being injured but obviously he hasn't been available to even be considered.

McCann got a sniff a few weeks ago and didn't do anything wrong without being brilliant and hasn't been seen since.

I really look forward to seeing Lowry running out for the first team, he offers something different from what we have currently. His incisive passing is a joy to see, especially in one so young. Remember his pass to Mcausland against the tims in the B team game last season, fantastic.

He will not be phased by playing for the first team, but we have to use him sensibly, 10-15 games. He is used to playing against part timers in the Lowland League, so the pace will be quicker, therefore he will need better stamina. Also, He needs to build up his upper body, maybe a programme should be put in place for him and McCann, as looks like King has benefitted from such a programme since last season.

I am in the if you are good enough you are old enough camp.Other teams have no problem playing g younger players like Jude Bellingham who is now also a fixture with England.Historically we have had loads of young players as regular starters.Big DJ and Parlane for example.

An away game at Tynecastle and another at Anfield.
Would you have played him there?

Charlie will have benefited from that match, and I was delighted to see him start, but anyone saying he had a great game that day would be kidding themselves on.

For example, if Arfield had been so disappointing with those three chances Charlie had he’d have been criticised.

Still a boy with loads of time on his hands, and a great attitude, and I’m sure he’ll get more chances this season.

And he wasn't even eligible for the game at Anfield, so it's been one game he's missed.

Given the size of the squad just now, it's not a huge surprise.

On Lowry - I hope he's back real soon. I think our biggest issue right now is a lack of attacking options, with the Lawrence injury only adding to that.

Yeah agree on that about Lawrence but Gio likes Arfield and would likely just use him anyway even if he had been available or Tillman.

McCann was ok against Dundee Utd but still a lot to learn before he's a regular but he couldn't play on Tuesday for example as he wasn't eligible.

I see McCann's long term future being as an alternative to Jack, Davis, Kamara, rather than the attacking midfield role he occupied that day. I just don't see him having the required skill set. Lowry on the other hand fits the profile perfectly.

Yes, very fair comment.

I was surprised he was played in such an advanced role.

Whilst not disagreeing with your post mate , the only evidence I’ve ever seen of young breakthrough Rangers players learning is by getting game time for Rangers or leaving .

Lowry doesn’t need to be an every game starter , but he needs first team game time . Patterson & Bassey have shown us this , even Hutton , Charlie Adam , Greegs , Stevie Smith even Barrie McKay.

Ps , even back in the day of Durrant , Derek Ferguson , Flecky , Shuggy Burns.

Whats up doc

I think Lowry is being over hyped personally, very good prospect but I’d still put him in the Tillman category of not really working hard and being a bit of a luxury player. The talent is definitely there just depends if he applies himself properly and kicks on.

More fool Gerrard for giving the majority of those players 1st team football at Rangers.

Other than Patterson, King and possibly McCrorie, the rest are miles away from being Rangers 1st team class.

Youth players will get a chance, if they are good enough.
It's then up to them what they do with that chance. Ibrox is an unforgiving place

he didnt have a great game but he played completely fine.

he missed those chances but given his game time its easily forgiven plus, as above, his performance was perfectly fine. He does have loads of time but he's 20, we play in a really shitey league so surely we can see him feature more over the likes of davis, arfield & jack.

Feels to me like Alex needs exposed to those demanding pressure points that most games have where the team , discipline and structure are the sole demands .

We know he has the other parts . In abundance .
