Andy Gray - Steven convinced there’s a title in them and that it can be this year

Andy Gray last night claimed Steven Gerrard is convinced he can win the title this season for Rangers.

The former Ibrox striker and veteran TV pundit spoke exclusively to Record Sport after a having a heart-to-heart with Gerrard and
assistant Gary McAllister following Sunday’s 4-0 friendly romp over Marseille.

Gray insists that not only do both men believe they are on the cusp on stopping Celtic’s ninth successive title – but that they should have ended the monopoly in their debut season.

Gray said: “No, it’s not too early to judge. Rangers are 100 per cent ready to make a proper title challenge this season.

“Steven knows it too having talked to him about it after the game. He’s absolutely convinced there’s a title in them and that it can be this year.

“He also said there are a couple of really young kids he’s going to blood over the next few weeks. He says he likes them a lot and wants them involved with the first team which is great news.

“But there is definitely a title push to come. When you think, had Rangers beaten the teams they should have beaten last season – and didn’t drop so many stupid points – then they probably would have won the title this year.

“That’s the thing that will annoy him. It was games we should have won. We drew a couple at home when we should have been taking three points. We lost a couple of away games and had a terrible record against Kilmarnock all season.

“Alfredo Morelos getting sent off so often cost us seven or eight points. All these things could have turned the title our way.

“So there was a title bid this year that just kind of fell away. But this season? I think it will definitely happen as does Steven, Gary Mac and all the backroom staff.

“Moreover if it doesn’t happen – if Steven doesn’t win it or go extremely close a la Liverpool-Man City – he’d be really disappointed.”

Gray is adamant Gerrard’s Ibrox future should not be placed in doubt if he fails to land the big one next season.

He added: “I don’t think there should be any question marks over his future even if he doesn’t stop nine in a row. Unless there’s some kind of collapse, no title challenge and Steven looks like he’s maybe not enjoying it – not picking the right teams or the right tactics. Under those circumstances his future might be questioned.

“But after speaking to him I know he’s loving the job. He loves the club and he tells me what they’re doing behind the scenes – the stuff people can’t see – is also terrific.

“When the new regime picked Rangers up the club had serious problems. The training ground wasn’t good enough, behind the scenes at Ibrox was dilapidated and so old fashioned.

“But they were showing me beneath the main stand, all the things they are creating down there. It’s just fantastic to see it all being brought up to the 21st century.

“He’s not doing all of these things for the short haul. I’m hoping he’ll want to stay here for at least a season or two more because I don’t think anyone can deny there has been progress.

“So it would be foolish to pull the trigger on him and start again next summer if he’s put up a serious title challenge. I can’t see any logic in that.”

I don’t expect to see tepid performances like we seen at the likes of Dens park last season, simply due to the competition in the squad, any dip in form and there’s someone capable to take your place.

We simply didn’t have that last season, I used to see folk going tonto about the lack of subs being used at times, yet looked at the bench and wondered who folk expected to change games other than the core we relied on.

Cannot wait for the domestic season to start.

Im sure he'll be delighted that Andy is relaying private conversations in the press :D

Great to read how much work is going on behind the scenes. This could be a terrific season.
Very carefully worded, he’s enjoying it, don’t think he’ll go even if they don’t stop 9, convinced they have it in them. They will be raging with that, their hordes will be all over it. I’d like to think it’s been cleverly planted!

unlike most rangers men in the media now ,i respect gray and love souness for their refusal to hide their love for us.

Haha just got a notification from a football app I use saying "Gerrard certain Rangers will win the league" says Andy Gray. Naive in the fucking extreme.

Even with 'unteliable' Morelos, wise up Andy.
I'm sure you've probably just disclosed private conversations. Why not just run an opinion place on how you think we can win 55, like almost every other fan

what for haha?
He's slagged Morelos, usual damning disciplinary issues.
He's only played 30 minutes this season and scored!
I think people get upset (even with the truth) when you get Brazil saying the rebel prick is better than Wan Bissaka and worth £50m... We then get our best player and most sellable asset slagged based on last year's performance, I think their wee prick only played 20 games so why is he not judged on last season?

He’s hardly revealing points of an intimate conversation. We’d be up in arms if the Gaffer didn’t think we could win the league.

Totally agree with every point you've made there mate!

If theres ever been a better chance at winning it, its definetly this year wae wee ginger plums at the wheel...

I have no doubts that Gerrard will lead this club to success. Dave King and Mark Allen cannot be praised enough for luring this man up here. It was an absolute masterstroke that has catapulted the club forward a number of years in its recovery due to the mans sheer professionalism and desire to be the best. All the things we do not see that Gerrard is changing behind the scenes shows how much he cares for Rangers.

We are lucky to have him.

We certainly have our best chance in many years of winning the league, every area of the club has been improved. Whether it’s enough only time will tell but these are things that will hopefully keep us in a good place for years to come.

Of course we can win the title.

Wether we do or not will be down to one thing, consistency.
We simply have to cut out the silly dropped points.

So reads, Gray has had a good chat with Gerrard and McAllister and twisted the words to sensationalise a league title or the Rhebel have been naughty

I believe so too although he’s getting ripped apart in another thread and although I don’t share his opinion about Morelos on that thread I don’t think there’s any malice intended in his comments.
I had a quick look at that thread and quickly exited it !
What he’ saying about Morelos you would have found on FF around the time of his sendings off, it’s simply his opinion, some will agree some won’t.
It does mark the difference between our ex players and theirs in that ours can criticise and theirs can’t. I think the same can be said for each set of supporters, we don’t hide from the truth where that lot definitely do.

Stevie G more or less called him a liar at today's press conference when he denied ever saying it.

W.A.T.P.

We must embrace 3 glorious points from every league match as points make Championees.

That means full concentration and maximum effort to win.

This can be achieved. Let's go...Let's do it.

No wonder. He's given the press an open goal (as if they need an excuse) and stuck the boot into our best player. But he's a big Rangers man, so it's all good.

Tav is our best player
Because you can rely on him not to put the team in the shit.
What gray said about Morelos was accurate. There’s no denying it.
Just because he’s one of us doesn’t mean he should be talking bs about Morelos, he’s let us down time and again. And most likely will again unless he’s grown up.

The entire interview by Gray was idiotic. All of it. The fact our manager has had to come out and distance himself from the comments will be embarrassing for him. Gray is clearly woefully out of touch with how the media up here operates.

I agree mate I've read it and Andy gray does not say Steven Gerrard's will win the league, usual moronic rebel journalists?(if you can call them that)twisting the words f...k them

Pretty daft from AG in public.

However, in private, Gerrard should be fully expecting the players to do them this year.
