I used to live up the road (south of the river for the last 18 months though). I don’t think the atmosphere is bad: problem was the team they had when they moved in was crap. I’ll bet the atmosphere was ok when they beat Chelsea yesterday. Never had any trouble with tickets but they were fairly mediocre when I was there!
Pubs: there’s a couple on the Westfield shopping mall. Tap East in the basement by Waitrose for the craft beer enthusiast, the Cow and a couple of others. Plenty of food options too. In Stratford itself, the Bull is alright though the King Edward is the nicest, imho. There’s a couple of others I never bothered with in nearly a decade there but will probably be ok pre-match. Hackney Wick was hipster central though but is now a rampantly commercialised sprawl of overpriced flats. But Crate has nice beer and the pizzas are outstanding. Quite small though. Howling Hops has a huge range of beer and, last time I was in, was doing a decent range of bbq-type fodder. A bit further afield, there’s a couple of ok boozers in Bow. A short few mins east on the Central Line is Leyton or Leytonstone, or on the train for the Forest Tavern at Forest Gate. And if you fancy a bit of the old Irons atmosphere, some of the old Boleyn boozers are still popular before games. A fair few didn’t survive the closure of the ground but I gather the beautiful Boleyn Tavern has reopened after a refurb. And the Black Lion in Plaistow is a historic old place (500 plus years old, I think though don’t quite me on that). A famous old pre-match venue .
