Argentine Superliga

A little surprised by this given all that is going on with COVID in the country. But politics and football...

The ever-reliable AFA have come up with an interesting format:

The “Professional League Cup 2020” which then progresses into either the “Champions Cup 2020” or the “Complementation Cup 2020”, depending upon standings in the original groups/zones.

Six groups of four - top two from each going into the Champions Cup, which is then two groups of six.

They're hoping to get this done by the end of the year so a proper Championship can begin in January.

What are the chances...?

Teams have been playing friendlies so no doubt the thinking is either get some competitive matches started. Especially with the economy tanking - as you say football and politics.

The new format is pretty ridiculous but no more so than the last few years. At least the current climate will allow for plenty of conspiracy theories to flourish.

A win is a win (as we know) but another poor match last night. Unbeaten in 8 games under Scaloni, though.

Not seen any highlights but based on the few reports I've read they agree with what you say.

They were critical of Otamendi so hopefully he continues to be erratic when we play Benfica.

That’s a great image. Hard to believe there’s that many teams and even at that, Banfield/Lanus/Estudiantes/Independiente/Racing are just outside Buenos Aires city
Quite a few in the lower divisions as well. Dock Sud is one that springs to mind. Brilliant City for Football.

Funny name for a Stadium:

It is named after a former manager who worked for the Coca-Cola company (Reginald Lee SA) and who contributed land for the construction of the first stadium that was located on land just behind the famous beverage company.

According to the newspapers, he'll undergo surgery in the next few hours for "subdural hematoma", a type of bleeding on the brain.

Cristina Kirchner had a similar diagnosis back in 2014 and was operated on without any subsequent issues.

I decided to start a new thread due to the upcoming surgery - most don't read this thread.

Didn't know that about Kirchner.

Here's hoping it all goes smoothly.
