I sometimes wonder what is the point of having them. Yet again yesterday we had a linesman who waited to see what way the referee was awarding throw ins, free kicks etc before raising his flag. Yesterday wasn't an exception either it's very common. Time and again we see standing a couple of yards away from players when one of them puts the ball out of play and no matter how far away the ref is they'll wait to see what way he gives the decision.

It's because the refs tell them that they are in charge and just want their support. They only want their opinions when asked.
