At Rangers my kids would ask why I was being called an Orange b*****d – Barry Ferguson

Barry says the worst instances were when he would be out with his kids and bigots would shout vile sectarian abuse at him.

Scottish football is the best it has been for years on the park but events off the pitch are tarnishing the image of our game.
In recent campaigns I’ve been turning my TV off during some live games but this season’s fixtures have been great spectacles that should be a boost to the reputation.
That is what I should be writing about just now, what a great product we have, but instead the sinister side is dominating the headlines yet again.
Take Kilmarnock’s performance against Celtic last weekend. Steve Clarke’s side were excellent but what did we talk about? Kris Boyd getting sectarian abuse and hit with a coin.
Alfredo Morelos then scored four goals for Rangers in their emphatic Scottish Cup win over Kilmarnock in midweek. But what are we talking about? Steve Clarke receiving sectarian abuse.

It was the same with Aberdeen v Rangers when, albeit it wasn’t fan behaviour, we ended up talking about Allan McGregor’s challenge on Lewis Ferguson.

But it’s the sickening sectarian side of our game that’s the real ugly part and has been for years. It saddens me to say I’m not sure we’ll ever completely eradicate it.

On the pitch I was fine with abuse but the worst instances were when I was at the shops with the kids and afterwards they would ask me, “Why are they calling you an Orange b*****d?”
I had to try to shield them from that but one thing I didn’t do was let it stop me going out. I refused to let idiots stop me doing normal everyday family things.
It has to be made clear it’s a small minority on each side. There are workshops and it’s about going into schools and trying to educate kids at a young age.
But sadly there will always be a small percentage of people who continue to do it. I have never accepted sectarian abuse but I’ve learned to deal with it.
It was harder for foreign guys to understand when they came to Rangers. Arthur Numan for example used to ask me why punters were calling him an Orange b*****d. He just thought it was something to do with being from Holland!
They ask a lot of questions and you have to try to explain it to them. You don’t like it but they learn pretty quickly when out in the streets.

It was the same when I played in England as my team-mates were always asking about the Old Firm game because they’d watched it on TV and were intrigued by the atmosphere.
When I took some of them to the fixture they were a bit taken aback, even by something as small as the fact we had to go on different buses depending on what end they were going in.
A few were from either Northern Ireland or the Republic or Ireland so they understood better but the English ones were a bit shocked at some of the shouts I received when we went out for a drink.
I brought the likes of Lee Bowyer and Stephen Carr up. As a Dubliner Stephen understood it better but they found it hard to get their head around.

I’ve had plenty of friendly banter with Celtic fans. These days they keep reminding me they’re the dominant team and I enjoy that. I was playing for Scotland in the Star Sixes this year and I had Simon Donnelly, Jackie McNamara and Rab Douglas in my team and we had great banter.
The vast majority of Celtic fans I bump into, it’s friendly banter but when it becomes vile it really gets my back up.
When it becomes “you Orange b*****d” when you’re out with your kids at a young age – that’s the side of it that’s disgusting.
In a lot of cases the perpetrators will be youngsters who don’t have a clue what they’re actually singing about but they just follow others.

Kris Boyd was hit by a coin while warming up in front of Celtic fans and Barry wonders if someone needs to lose an eye before action is take against the coin thugs

Kris Boyd was on the end of it last weekend and was also struck by a coin in the latest incident of its kind this season.
Will it take someone getting seriously injured before something is done about it? I know it hit Boydy on the elbow and Neil Lennon in the chest but are the authorities waiting for someone losing an eye?
If you heavily fine clubs then the fans will soon start picking these idiots out who are bringing shame to our game.
There has been progress made and it’s the same with racism. Remember Mark Walters having bananas thrown at him during an Old Firm game in 1988?
But events in the last seven days are a reminder of how far we still have to go and, while we can’t ever give up on finding ways to make it better, my fear is we will never completely stamp it out.

Thanks for posting.
We shouldn’t forget the “ provincial clubs fans” freely using the term Hun directed at us. I get fed up by these fans wishing the “old firm” would piss off because of the sectarianism but then think it’s acceptable to call us Huns and get all indignant when pulled up.
We never started the fire !

At least he’s telling the truth and it’s a two sided sectarian divide

Also confirming what we all know that the coin hit Lennons chest that the prick goes down holding his face. A scumbag and liar that’s what Lennon is and the mhedia don’t question him and prove he’s poison and a bitter bastard

Good effort Barry, call them out on it and remind them bigotry works both ways.
I like how, similar to Boyd, he says he doesn’t care about chants actually at the game, only that lot seem to care, but when you can’t go out with your family or with a beer with your mates without getting it to, that’s a totally different thing and bang out of order.

I also like the subtle dig at Lennon for faking the coin throwing injury to his face when it clearly hit him on the chest.

I brought this up to a load of workmates who had no problem calling me a hun, asked the tims if I can call them a 19th Century Terrorist, to be fair on some they said aye, the others were a bit taken a back that I would ask such a thing.

To the fans of other clubs I asked why they don't call tims 19th Century Terrorists and they all said because they aren't bigots, showed them pictures of KAH written all over Northern Ireland and asked if they were just referring to Rangers fans, also asked them why Kilmarnock, Hearts, etc are known as diet Huns, basically none of them thought it was sectarian and won't use the word in front of me again.

Good on you mate. They all want a one way street when it comes to who gets called the bigots. It’s the indignant look they give you when pulled up.

Good. Need lots more coming out saying the abuse they have gotten in the past.

Line up a narrative. We have been burying it too long.
Beasley , Numan , McCulloch , Cannigia would be great.

Av jst been greeting on another thread about no ex players coming out to try and defend the club by giving their side of the story.

Jst hope more follow Barrys example, well played Barry for being honest about the issue

Hopefully Ian Ferguson will be next to come out after he was subjected to sectarian abuse while playing for Dunfermline v Celtic with MON saying "He was a big boy, deal with it" or words to that effect in relation to the vile abuse he suffered that day

Barry subtly reminding folk lennon was hit in the chest not the face hahaha.

No 1 cares when its rangers men getting abuse like bazza, or when folk were writing hate on novos house ect it all gets swept, untill it happens to the tims.

As someone mentioned on a different thread, when Morelos, Barasic and Boyd were hit by objects it was treated as a bit of fun. Lennon being hit in the chest was a national outcry.

Doing fine Barry untill above, would it have been so difficult to say it was Celtic fans throwing bananas at Mark Walters

Respect to Ferguson for pointing out the obvious .

Not many on our side have had the balls to do it.
The papers will only seek those they want for quotes and interviews we are lucky Barry has his own column in a rag because I doubt Keith Jackson or his like will go out the way to get interviews from the likes of Novo etc

Hopefully the start of other players sticking their heads above the parapets and speaking out about the sectarian abuse they have suffered for years . But I wont hold my breath , but live in hope they do .

I bet Ally McCoist could give a few examples of him being targeted by sectarian abuse, come on Super let's hear them.

Although it's good to hear our side of the story, thisjust gives the anti sectarian (catholic) brigade more credence, therefore more funding.
Tackle this problem by going to the root of the problem , which is separate schooling

Our last three big wins..v Celtic,Aberdeen and Kilmarnock have all been overshadowed in the media by focusing on negatives for Rangers. Firstly it was Morelos, then it was McGregor and Morelos and lastly it's Clarke's bigoted outburst.

Yes it's nice to see a former captain raise the subject, but would it be asking too much for Barry to highlight the blatant double standards at play in the media and at the SFA & SPFL?

Edu took racist abuse too. Had to come back to Scotland to testify in court

Then there was Alberta getting his windows smashed when he played away.in Europe. His girlfriend was home along that night

But Nacho was by far the worst. The police refused to help so he was reduced to hiring his own security
