Bobby Moore

I have just finished watching a documentary, what a reminder of what a great player Bobby Moore's was. Two particular instances stand out, firstly with 1 minute to go in extra time in the 1966 world cup final with England 3-2 up, ball gets crossed into England box, Jack Charlton is screaming for Bobby Moore to send it into the roof of the stand but instead he brings it down with this chest plays a one two out of the box and sends the ball through for Geoff Hurst to wrap it up. Pure class. The other is in the 1970 world cup when they lose 1-0 to Brazil, after the game Pele sprints straight towards Bobby Moore to swap jerseys with him. Says it all

He was supposed to have swiped a necklace from a jewellers display as England done a pre tournament tour of Columbia prior to Mexico ‘70.
It held up his joining the team for Mexico and turned into a legal nightmare.

I read that the thief was actually a younger squad member and Bobby knew this but protected him being team captain.
Obviously a long time ago and we’ll never know for sure.

As a footballer Moore was quite slow but his reading the game was superb.
His display against Pele in Mexico ‘70 was a masterclass in defending.
I remember watching it on TV as a kid and my dad cheering every time Moore won the ball in defence . “ There he is again!!”

Way ahead of his time. Shameful treatment at West Ham after he retired. Harry Rednapp never lets them forget.

That's what I was referring to. He was treated as a hero, but only after his death.
He won the FA Cup, The European Cup winners cup and the World Cup all within 3 years and all at Wembley.
Only 51 when he tragically passed away.

I am not that much into knighthoods etc on account of some who receive them are undeserved or turn out to be suspect and devious and have them removed. I also support nearly all other international teams who play against England (the exception is when England play the Republic of Ireland, I want England to win).

However Bobby Moore truly deserved to be made Sir Bobby Moore on account of captaining England to the World Cup. Even posthumously. I just cannot for the life of me understand why he wasn't knighted.

A genuine world class player- although as a youngster I had trouble admitting it
I mean he lifted the World cup for England & I was 12 at the time - for me at that age in that time period- there were no positives

So appreciating just how good he was came later for me & looking back now he truly was a high class act

Not the biggest, not the quickest but by god he could read the game I would liken him to Baresi.
All the more remarkable as he wasn't one for training and loved a bevvy.
My cousins took me to see West ham in 1972 and I idolized him growing up.

It was the same for me, but a few years back I watched a rerun of the full 66 final and there is no denying that England had a great team

I have always been fascinated by this game. Coming so soon after WW2, most of the players would have childhood memories and indeed may have lost family members. I'm shocked it never got more physical on and off the pitch.

I remember watching this with my uncle at my granny's house. We were both shouting for West Germany and my granny was disgusted she kept referring to the war which I suppose was understandable but we just hated England

you can’t be awarded a posthumous knighthood, there was a petition to try and get Moore a knighthood for the 50th anniversary of the World Cup win and it didn’t work for that reason.

Loved Jimmy Greaves explanation of Moore's ''professionalism''. Apparently a squad of London based players were enjoying an after hours session in some club and the booze was flowing freely. ''There was Bobby Moore though sipping on his half pint of bitter, the only problem was he'd had fourteen of them''.

Strange how things work out in life,I’m Bobby Moore lived in Coventry in 66.Tough for a wee Glesga guy who bet against England every game, cost me a fortune.Played football in Derby when I moved there and guess what my strip number was always 6,just one of those quirks of fate.

He was a truly wonderful player but not as good as the English media made him out to be. Not as good as Beckenbaur in my humble opinion nor Bobby Charlton.

First and only(I think))player to go to Wembley 3 successive seasons and lift a different trophy each time!world class player, rolls Royce!

The good thing about this is that it's all about opinions and both were fantastic players. I do remember beckenbauer being given a torrid time at Ibrox from Willie Johnston in the cup winners' cup semi-final in 1972. He didn't look like the coolest player in the planet on that night

Harry Redknapp on... Bobby Moore: Ex-skipper was betrayed by Hammers
Former West Ham midfielder Harry Redknapp hits out at the treatment World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore received from his ex-club when he was kicked out of Upton Park for not having a ticket.

Absolutely stunned reading that but probably shouldn’t be as the number of arseholes on football boards is unbelievable.

As reported on FF from time to time, something similar allegedly happened to Jock Wallace at Ibrox in 1988 when he had returned to see Rangers play Hearts. After the game was over he was was waiting outside the Blue Room to speak with David Holmes when a Commissionaire approached him and told him that he had been instructed to escort him out of Ibrox. It seemed to be instructions from Alastair Hood, the Operations Executive. Even more embarrassing was Jock Wallace's wife was in the Players Lounge and he had to go and get her before being forced to leave.

Utterly disgraceful way to treat one of our greatest managers and a true club legend.
