Brendan Rodgers has slammed the refereeing decisions that enraged Pedro Caixinha at the weekend.

The Celtic boss has expressed sympathy with his Rangers rival and revealed he understands why the Portuguese lost the plot and was sent to the stands.

Steven McLean failed to send off Motherwell’s Ryan Bowman for a clear elbow on Fabio Cardoso that left the centre-back with a battered and bloodied nose.

McLean missed a plethora of fouls and was also seemingly oblivious to Bruno Alves’ kick on Louis Moult.

Parkhead boss Rodgers has now waded into the row – and likened some of the challenges to ones from the 1980s.

The Northern Irishman said: "There was a couple of decisions yesterday that would've worried me. I thought the authority from the officials in the game was poor.

"You play in that level of game, I could see why Pedro was probably annoyed.

"There was a couple of incidents there that went unpunished. You maybe would've got away with that in the 80s, but certainly not now. It certainly shouldn't have been the case.

"I have seen the player involved in the incidents, in similar incidents.

"I saw an incident with Kieran Tierney at Parkhead last season that went unpunished.

"We all want our team to be aggressive and committed but there is a line and that is up to the officials to see that and act accordingly.

"You want a physical game but you also want officials to stamp out anything that goes beyond that and I felt yesterday lacked authority in terms of officiating.

"But you've got to give credit. The boy (Louis) Moult scores his goals. First one, read it well in the box and his second was a brilliant finish.

"It'll be a great final and obviously delighted for Motherwell to get through because they've started the season very well."

Rodgers was also frustrated by the decision to award Hibs a penalty in Celtic’s semi-final win.

He has revealed assistant referee Frank Connor came looking for him to apologise for the spot-kick decision given after Dedryck Boyata had nicked the ball away from Martin Boyle inside the box.

"The only thing I would say is the young linesman came in after the game and apologised so that takes courage to do that.

"He was looking for me but I was at my press conference so I didn't get the chance to speak to him but he came in to apologise and said to Dedryck Boyata that he made a mistake.

"That takes a lot for someone to do that.

"Thankfully it didn't cost us but he made a mistake and owned up to it and thankfully we had a great reaction and saw the game out."

Surprise surprise. Who do Well play in the final. Oh it is the scum. This is only the start of a campaign in which the Mhedia will willingly participate attacking Well players so that the ref will be under extreme pressure to "protect" the scum players. What is the betting one of Well players gets a red card?

Nail on the head. Anyone who seriously thinks the tranny shagger is the least bit concerned about us is off their head.

Agree with posters above...all done to apply pressure on the refs before the final v m'well. Sleekit scummy b[astard.

So the path is being laid for compliant officials appointed to protect them against any repeat performance from Motherwell. Scum and cheats from cradle to grave. Surely anybody with any mallum could have predicted the faux sympathy from them.

Anyone who thinks Brenda has any sympathy for us is deluded, once again the press portraying him as some messiah, Mr Scottish football. He is only out for himself and his rotten club

He’s only saying that because he doesn’t fear him. That in itself should be enough to change managers.
Naw, sorry, can't agree with this one bit.
It's pure and simple the reason this cretinous creature has came away with this. Putting pressure on the referee's to hand the up coming final in Ra Selliks favour.

I dont know of any refs going to look for Pedro to apologise for the assaults on our players. When one of ours gets attacked they are a cheat/cant handle it. It's actually embarassing how pathetic our country and FA are. This country actually makes me feel sick

There’s no doubt he’s putting pressure on the refs but if he saw Pedro as a threat he wouldn’t say he has sympathy for him

Saint Brenda is attempting to control the narrative and ensure no leniancy against his team.

On the penalty Hibs got – tells the world the linesman got it wrong, and apologised after the game – “it takes courage” to do that apparently, but it’s a seed of “got it wrong, watch for it”

On our game – with apparent sympathy for Pedro - he then says "I have seen the player involved in the incidents, in similar incidents. I saw an incident with Kieran Tierney at Parkhead last season that went unpunished.

And there you have it – sod all to do with Pedro and Rangers, all about cute control of the narrative ahead of big games and a cup final. It’s professional, it’s obvious and yet we do not do it – in turn, in this respect, our Board are failing Rangers and because of it we’re a soft touch
