Celtic face threat of multimillion pound compensation claim(The Times)

No mention of a “separate entity” in this latest statement..
That’s because McCafferty was Celtic’s kit man. Employed by the club, no boys club bullshite to hide behind! Note they don’t actually apologise for it happening when he was there, just that he had been doing it for years. It’s clearly the lawyers statement!

think the club went to the procurator fiscal with it and it was the boys word against Neely and that was that ...... but Daly said there was no paper trail in the procurator fiscal office .........

So paper trail or not he was still arrested for it but never charged. Looks like nothing was ever conclusively proven with him.

Did McCafferty work with Hughes at both Hvs and Falkirk ?

Also was McCafferty the mentally challenged kit man when Hughes played at Parkpaed?

Not sure of the timescales

Hughes needs a chap and questioned given McCaffertys comments at the trial

I still remember Hughes running round a football pitch naked when a film crew and he was in the pictures

Defo needs a police interview to see what McCafferty is alleging
He was at Falkirk when he did that.

McCafferty joined Falkirk at the request of the the manager in 2004. The manager was the former Celtic and Hibs player, John 'Yogi' Hughes.

Also see post #834, and particularly the following extract;

McCafferty on former footballer and coach John ‘Yogi’ Hughes:

“I was helping out at Hibs at the time and Big Yogi, John Hughes, who was the manager and Yogi was a bugger for, you know he was into this devilment, sort of a laugh and a joke.
“He would say to me: ‘Right come on Jim, let’s get the bastards.’ And the point is he would go in and turn the lights out and start you know, the shenanigans, you know, a bit of kidology with them sort of thing, horseplay.
“It went too far. It didn’t involve myself because he was my pal big Yogi. It happened. He got carried away with himself one day and one of the younger boys - about 21, 22 at the particular time, Yogi had given him a right ripping and he came to me.
“He said, ‘Jim, I think I’ve made a blunder.’ I said, ‘Right, what’s up?’
“He said ‘I can’t remember the boy’s name now. I just had a right go at him and I’ve maybe gone a wee bit too far.’ He was concerned about how the parents and supporters would have thought about that.”

Well he was. He thought diseases were caused by spirits and demons. It doesn’t mean he was wrong to go up against the corrupt criminal catholic church.

Aye that's what the RC Church teachings were. Doesn't mean he then would of believed it later.

FFS it took some balls to nail 90 odd discrepancies of Catholic teachings on the door at Wittenburg Church 400 odd years ago.

Christ look what they did during the Spanish Inquisitions etc back then or how they persecuted French Huguenots.

This may be pushed as a "Scottish football problem" with the SFA and SPFL clubs having all to pay in to a victims fund with extra money from the Scottish Government.

Even the mentally challengeds’ lickspittle clubs would baulk at that surely.
If the victims rights are rejected by the celtc perpetrators, the SFA and Scotland’s tin pot government their lawyers should appeal to Westminster or an international court of human rights. No hiding place should be available to them,

I’m no lover of the Catholic Church but Martin Luther was an idiot. He said doctors were fools for trying to treat diseases as if they were caused by tiny organisms called ‘germs’.
Eh? What's your point here mate?
I would hazard a guess during the 16th century with medicine being in it's infancy that the connection between hygiene and treatment of germs and disease many would have thought similar to Luther.

Treble treble or not football is a sport but child abuse is a crime .Perverting the course of justice by attempting a cover up of criminal activity of the most heinous type has no statute of limitations in our law.It cannot be blessed away with a Hail Mary. The momentum towards the truth must continue .
There can be no hiding place for those who believe themselves above our law .
None.

Many? More like everyone(well, maybe not the spirits & demons) apart from maybe a couple of individuals who had some belief about contagion causing disease but no actual evidence or proof. All that came around 300 years later.

It would be like someone in the distant future calling, say, Stephen Fry an idiot because his knowledge of science had been superseded by advances in scientific learning after his death.

If being wrong about science or medicine means your an idiot Aristotle must be the biggest idiot in history. The guy was wrong about almost everything in medicine & biology but it's obvious Aristotle had a brain the size of a basketball.

Edit: ignore post im going off-topic.

Agree mate, Luther was like everyone of his time in that what they believed to be fact to them,we all know differently today with the advances of science and medicine.
Calling Luther an idiot is way off the mark as well.
The reformation freed us from the yoke of repression and slavery that is Catholicism in the 16th century and paved the way for the religious and personal freedoms that you and I enjoy today.

That is how it should be mate. The line will be that all of Scottish football needs to come together for the victims, the perpetrators and not the institutions should be the ones who are rightfully punished. The clubs with the biggest youth set ups and attendances should of course pay in the most. The Scottish Government will happily pay in ...or perhaps offer a long term repayable loan' as long as this of course distracts from any independent investigation which would obviously lead somewhere they would rather wasn't exposed....

Eh? no!
This is about a long-standing denial from one club who knowingly employed a group of evil paedophiles, they, the media and the SFA, have done their level best to keep it from being uncovered as long as they can.

The statement Celtic FC issued in Celtic View
Here is the statement Celtic FC issued in its own newspaper, the Celtic View, in December 1986, in response to claims in our sister paper the Sunday Mail.

The statement was reproduced the following month in the Celtic Boys’ Club magazine.
“A Sunday newspaper recently carried a story which cast a shadow over the Celtic Boys’ Club in general, and some of the leaders in particular.
“It also included a clear inference that the Celtic Football Club had not taken appropriate action with regard to the allegations contained in the article.
“In actual fact, the Celtic Board investigated the rumours and interviewed the men concerned in depth and could find nothing to substantiate the stories that were being circulated.
“During the course of the last 10 days, Celtic Football Club and the boys’ club have been in receipt of hundreds of letters and phone calls from boys and their parents, past and present, stating their complete support and backing of all involved with the boys’ club.
“It must be clearly emphasised that apart from this newspaper article, inspired by the former chairman of the boys’ club, not one single complaint has been received by any other person with a Celtic connection.
“The boys’ club leaders who have been placed under a cloud as a result of these rumours have instructed their lawyers to take the appropriate course of action and, if necessary, to go to a court of law to make sure these scurrilous stories are buried once and for all.”

A woman who claims she was sexually abused by a priest is set to sue the Roman Catholic Church after it was refused a last chance to reverse a ruling holding it responsible.
The church argued it could not be held liable as no formal employment relationship with its clergy existed.
It lost a High Court case in 2011 and has now been refused permission to take the appeal to the Supreme Court.
The woman said she was abused a priest of the Portsmouth Diocese.
Lawyers for the claimant, who is set to pursue a civil case, said it was the first time a court had been asked to rule on whether the "relationship between a Catholic priest and his bishop is akin to an employment relationship".
They believe it could become a test case for further claims.

'Naturally delighted'

In 2011, the High Court ruled the church could be held liable for the wrongdoings of its priests.
Mr Justice Macduff decided the professional relationship between a priest and his bishop was sufficiently close so as to impose responsibility.
The Court of Appeal upheld the ruling last year and the Supreme Court has now refused permission for a further appeal because "the application does not raise an arguable point of law of general public importance".
Tracey Emmott, the woman's lawyer, said: "She is naturally delighted. She has been through nearly five years of torment since first notifying the Portsmouth Diocese of her abuse.
"The behaviour of the church in this case has only further tarnished its reputation."
The woman claims she was repeatedly sexually abused and raped by Father William Baldwin, from the age of six at a children's home run by nuns near Portsmouth in the 1970s.
Father Baldwin died in 2006.
Rev Stephen Morgan, from the Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth, said: "We are obviously disappointed at the decision of the Supreme Court not to hear our appeal, however we have to accept it.
"The actual matter of the allegations have yet to be tested in court."

And they've all been sentenced in a court of law and the scum are still in denial.

I'm beginning to think that this may not be purely about avoiding paying compensation to the victims. I think the bigger picture is that they want to limit reputational damage and protect the names of many prominent officials who have been an integral part of the club for many years and who deliberately failed to protect children in their youth system to prevent reputational damage to the “Club like no other.”

The depths, or heights to which this absolute scandal could go are difficult to estimate.
We know for a fact that this was an open secret, it has been well documented.
So who did know, what was the extent of their understanding and when did they know? How many people in positions of power within Ceptic and the SFA heard reports from youngsters, of them being abused by paedophiles within Ceptic's youth system, and did not report it to the Police?
Lou Macari knew, he said so in his autobiography.
Tommy Burns knew.
Johnny Doyle knew.
Following Cairney’s abuse of the young boy in America, the 4 coaches (Jim McNally, Bill Gilfillan, John Gallacher and Willie Hampson) who had the meeting in the Boston Airport cafe knew. Jack McGinn then arranged for the boy to be signed for Ceptic and arranged a meeting at which he accepted Cairney’s resignation so he knew.

Jock Stein knew as he sacked Torbett.

These are the individuals who I know knew but there must be many many more, just as there will be many more victims who cannot face coming forward.

As a result of this not being reported, how many children continued to be abused and how many were subsequently abused who could have been spared those horrors had the people involved reported it to the Police rather than trying to hush it up and protect the "good" name of Ceptic rather than protect the children?

Who knew what, when and refused to advise the authorities has to be established. They should all be held accountable for their negligence. This can only happen if a full, open and independent public enquiry takes place. It would beggar belief that a public enquiry would not be held to establish how the biggest paedophile ring and subsequently the biggest cover up of it’s existence in the history of Scottish Football could happen. Lessons have to be learned and that can only happen after a full and open investigation takes place.

The above statement also applies to Celtic. Their behaviour in regards to the cover up (and the cover up of the cover up) has been disgusting and their contempt for the victims has been shameful.

I imagine cel’ic will fear the damage to their reputation (no laughing) just as much if not more than compensation claims. I think they’d happily pay large sums of money behind closed doors if it meant it’d all just go away, unfortunately I don’t see them having to pay compensation claims at the same level as they would in the States - %^*& knows why, are we saying we don’t value Scottish children as much as Americans do?!

Compensation claims would impact on the present and near future, but if their name became synonymous worldwide with paedos the way Penn State has then it would be extremely damaging for a very long time. If the world knew and associated them with their crimes the same way it does with Penn State, who is going to play for them or manage them.

In a just world the victims would get every last penny they deserve and the world would never let them forget the crimes they’ve committed.

The legacy of the cel’ic ‘greats’ are at stake;
- stein; knew enough to boot Torbett out but didn’t go to the police. Let that sink in, he knew someone was abusing kids and didn’t report it to the police!
- ‘cesar’; the club’s greatest captain said it was an open secret, presumably meaning his teammates knew about it.
- burns; the most cel’ic man you’ll find was defending one of them.

They have a stand named after one and a statue of another outside their ground. That’s up there with Jackson’s statue at Fulham.

Knowledge is power, their knowledge of what was going on gave them the power to stop it. The fact they didn’t makes them complicit!

@boabsuncle had made a bit of an arse of it there. It’s clear that McCafferty was talking about the 1990s John Hughes.
Correct @Valley Bluenose
I had a look at the tweet and @boabsuncle apologised for getting it wrong.
My first instinct was that someone was trying to muddy the waters to take the heat away from 1990’s John Hughes.
Reading McCaffery’s transcripts, it would appear that Hughes was involved in something that most people would consider indecent.

Anywhere else in Scotland and MSP's would be getting up on their hooves at Holyrood and demanding and getting a full and independent public inquiry into this scandal. Their collective silence, however, is deafening and quite telling. They don't want the world to know that Celtic knew, their Boardroom knew, as did their club captain, and they all did nothing.

The probability is that every coach and official of CBC over the years knew of the ‘open secret’. That means hundreds of people knew yet none of none of them thought that they should contact the police. An independent enquiry must be held.

That’s the ONLY possible proper decision. When you consider that Birt & McSherry suggested 14 names we could be less than half way to getting to the bottom of this paedophile ring.

Pretty sure you could add every lion to that list. They would have had free reign in all parts of the club so they would have known.

They certainly buried them but it's coming back to haunt them big time.

You could always take the lead mate, I’m hopeless at letters ect so I wouldn’t know where to start

How do we force the government into implementation of a full scale public enquiry?

The way dornan set up his sectarian group within holyrood.

How do we go about demanding this enquiry that gives them no room to manipulate the findings?

We have a problem there Tt my skills are way below what is required for job like that and the fact is I shouldn't need to,We have people in Scotland who are well qualified for this particular job and are playing dead dumb and blind about it.
As you say there are many who should be doing something about it but a fans forum certainly isn’t the way to get justice as it would be seen as a point scoring exercise instead of many genuinely wanting justice within our society, if we can’t protect our children then society is well and truly fecked.

The victims of any abuse should never ever have to go down the route of no win no fee as us all in society have failed and the system is old and needing reformed, doesn’t matter who the beasts are or what god they pray too as each and everyone needs jailed as do the men and women who protect them.

Maybe you can't. Maybe there will be some names involved that can't be revealed.
