In the Football Manager thread a poster said they won the league despite never having topped the table until the final game.

What is the closest such an incident has came to happening in real life?

I don't have stats to hand but in the season the bookies paid out on Newcastle winning the league at Xmas, Man Utd mustn't have lead long.

We went top a couple of times during the season, but both times it only lasted till the next game.
