Charlie Johnstone, Rangers FC

Excellent reading, thanks for posting. How lucky he was to have played in the eight one game.
A dream for any Rangers fan.

Thanks for posting this Mark. Charlie was my cousin's grandpa. I used to visit him while he was in nursing home in Stonehouse and he'd tell me about his time at Rangers especially the Moscow Dynamo game. He was a real character.

That is a brilliant read. The wartime years gave very little time devoted to them, so anything that tells the story of that period is rare and valuable.

Charlie was a pal of mines Uncle and he has asked if there are any photographs in existence either of him or as part of team photos?

He has loads of family photos but none of him in a Gers strip.

I know he would be thrilled if anyone could supply one or point me in the direction of someone who might know.

Yes mate. Charlie is the balding Rangers player. There is also a picture of Charlie in a big overcoat ,standing with the team before they boarded their flight to play that match vs The Army in Hanover. It's in the Rangers book called " Changing faces". Not got it to hand, but I remember the photo of the team with Mr Struth posing for a picture.

Thanks for confirming- I'll pass on the information. As someone said previously on this thread the wartime years were understandably overshadowed though it's a shame there is not much documented and photographed. Imagine playing in an 8-1 hiding of your biggest rivals. More should be made of these wartime achievements.

In the article it states he is 77 that cannot be correct, I was at the Dynamo game and I was Ten, I am now 84. must be a really old interview.

Maybe it is me who is havering. am away tae ma bed.

I can't remember where I was reading the details of this photo just the other day.
Apparently it was Charlie Johnstone who instigated this melee and the other Ranger to his right(I forget again) came to his the rescue from the baying Dynamo players.

Great read, & piece of history. The more we learn about the people who came before us, & made Rangers the greatest club in the world, the better.
Thanks for posting

These are great pics. As I said earlier in the thread my cousins are Charlie's grandchildren, I asked if they had any other photos of him in Rangers kit but they think their mum only has photos of him when he was with Dunfermline.

I worked in the same office as his brother Willie, as a youngster.
Willie was a mine of information on Charlie and his Rangers career.

Old fella used to sing about Charlie Johnstone , and other players of the 1945 Moscow Dynamo game, at the “Harmony” after lodge meetings.

Anybody shed any light on such a song?

Charlie suffered the same problem as all left wingers at Rangers after Alan Morton, the older fans compared them to the Wee Blue Devil.
Saw Charlie play for us in my early days and was at that Cup Semi Final in 1950 when he played for QoS.
