Chesterfield 3 Rangers 0 Anglo Scottish Cup - 40 years ago today.

Not much of a carry out that boy talking had 4 cans all the way to chesterfield :))

well before my time think my granda might have been at that match though

I remember having to buy a carry out as the pubs were closed because big bad Rangers were in town. Sat in the pissing rain getting soaked and bevvied then getting humped in a terrible game. That was a long soggy journey home. 24 years old and daft as a brush. Ahhh the memories.

Slightly before my time but I vaguely remember it.
What was the criteria for playing in this cup? Did it run for a few seasons, or just the one?
A two legged affair seems a long drawn out format.

Ran from 1975/76 to 1980/81 English and Scottish sides I think invited teams

before that it known as the Texaco Cup from 1970/71 to 1974/75 early season had teams from Ireland as well as England and Scotland towards the end just England and Scotland

Twice we played in it both times we never had European Football 1974/75 and 1980/81

It’s no surprise that it was scrapped with the long, drawn out format they had.
I see St Mirren were the only Scottish team to lift the trophy. I have no memory of them and Coventry playing a rehashed version in 87/88 season. Apparently they only played one leg of the final and it was then scrapped.

A sure sign we had a crap season the season before and failed to qualify for Europe.it was very much a conciliation prize and turned out a humiliating one to boot.

I remember this well it hammered down and we were absolutely dreadful. I was utterly depressed after the game and it was a long trip home.

Posted this on another thread about this game but the one memory that sticks with me about the Chesterfield game was the bears singing mean machine throughout the game as that film had been shown the night before. This was when the only TV was council TV.

As the OP says though big beastie bagged a double as we beat the mhanks on the Saturday which helped ease the pain.

Through the good and bad times though one a bear always a bear that is just the way it is.

My old man was down at it.

A mob of them did an overnighter in Sheffield, the Jim Watt v Sean O'Grady fight at the Kelvin Hall on the Friday night and then the pumping of the mentally challengeds on the Saturday.

I think it's fair to say his week improved as it went on.
Was the Sean O'Grady fight not at Ibrox?

Some great fan footage on this clip but also a reminder of one of the worse results in the clubs history.

Rangers actually responded to this shocker days later by beating Celtic by the same scoreline at Ibrox.
Home leg was bad enough..

Parents wouldn't let me miss school to go to Chesterfield..

Was one of the wettest games I’ve been too. Torrential. And Phil Bonnyman played for them at the time.

I nipped a local midden after the match. Got a cloth tit.
Definitely the highlight of a dreadful night.
We missed the worst penalty I’ve ever seen in my life.
Colin McAdam if memory serves.
Billy McKay was the only player who turned up that night.

Edit. Just viewed the clip.
Funny how memory plays tricks.
That’s not how I remembered the penalty.
Had it my head it trundled through the mud.

I was there that night.

One of the club’s worst nights.

And a friggin long drive home to Glasgow.

Was there as well . Great trip apart from the game. Had forgotten about us singing mean machine . Well remembered.

The lowest of the low under John Greig. Three days later we beat Celtic 3-0 at Ibrox.

That said it was a decent trip.
The less said about Chesterfield the better. Was at Ibrox on the Saturday which I think its fair to say was a surprisingly easy win. Another win which was easier than expected was the Sep 85 OF match at Ibrox which again was a 3 0 win. Was just to the right of the directors box that day and back to Lochinch after for a fair few bevvies.

2 goals disallowed in the OF victory as well - a surprisingly comfortable win considering how we were all feeling before hand.

I went down on Atlantis bus from Clydebank.
I think there were 7 arrests and 5 were from the Atlantis bus!
Can't remember the name of the place we stopped but I was on Pernod and blackcurrant and sank them like water as a 16 year old does.
The previous night me and my mate had climbed up flagpole on a boat at Arnott Youngs shipyard and blagged a massive union flag.
We spent the night into the morning painting Glasgow Rangers across it and it was f cking beautiful.
Unfortunately after my Pernods I ended up pulling it down from luggage rack and spewing all over it.co
Off the bus and into a big bin with it, bastard!
I remember all the shops and pubs all boarded up on way to ground.
Still have no memory whatsoever of the game but the following Saturday fair made up for it

I was at the Coventry v St Mirren Game. 1-1 both teams had won their respective FA Cup. Return game never got played but Coventry City had a replica cup thing in their Trophy Cabinet. If I recall correctly Ian Ferguson played for St Mirren in that game.
Was also at Chesterfield game. Bunked off work with a few other Apprentices and went down. We only decided to go that day. Pissed it down, Police escort off the Motorway, Pubs shut, Rangers got gubbed but back in work next day with nobody any the wiser we bunked off.

I threw the wrong bag into the bin on lifting day 15yr ago.
It had the programme from this game signed by a few players...One of them being Davie Cooper .

Worst ever following Rangers. Football special from central station. Took forever. Pouring. Cops escorted us to and from ground. Couldn't get a chippy, a beer or a packet of fags. Kunts.

Was at the home game which was bad enough and so thankfully missed the away game.

Beating Celtic a few days later summed us up back then.

Jim Watt beat Howard Davis Jr at Ibrox during the summer of 1980. I was at the fight and think it was a UD victory. He beat O'Grady in his next fight before finishing his career against Alexis Arguello. Pretty sure he was presented to the crowd at Hampden in a final? and left the bears in no doubts as to where his loyalties lay.

True story....in my first job 16 years old....getting a doing every day from a few lapsed Bears rather than Tims...anything worse? In discussion with one on the Friday before the OF game after the Chesterfield debacle...he says ok ya big daftie...score tomorrow....? I said we are more than capable of beating them...he laughs-score then? 3-0 to us-no chance he says.....you should have saw his face on the Monday. Good bounce back game for us-glad to be at it rather than Chesterfield.

As JCB64 says above those two results sums up the erratic nature of the team then....
