Tempting fate starting a Copa thread but here goes. Hopefully the football is better than the organisation.

Colombia winning their first game under Rueda (I think?) last night, good to see because they have been in horror form.

@drgriffen you catch the two qualifiers last night?.

Only saw some of the Bolivia - Ven match. Always hard to judge opposing teams in La Paz due to the altitude plus the visitors were without three of their stars.

I'll post highlights of the games in a minute.

If the senior players decide not to play will Brazil put out an all domestic team.

Lot of money involved and Brazil will be loathed to give up the tournament.

Tim Vickery wrote this a few days ago. Looking quite prescient:

Is this the end of the matter?

Not necessarily. The interesting thing now is the reaction of the players. Are they willing to go along with the competition? Argentina players said they were not happy with the move and threatened a boycott, according to ESPN sources, although Sergio Aguero said they would play on despite being unhappy with the change.

Uruguay players Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani also casted doubt on the wisdom of holding the competition. Furthermore, FIFPro, the world players' union, has expressed concern, and will give support to any player who decides not to compete in this Copa.

They are all happy to play WC qualifiers tho? Whats the issue with the Copa America? It’s been moved a couple times due to civil unrest but can’t see why it can’t be played in Brazil as planned.

What’s the feeling just now mate, is it going ahead or what?.

When’s Alfie due back with Colombia after his isolation?.

Don't know.

If the players from Argentina said they were boycotting as well then I can see it being cancelled. If not then they will probably go ahead even if Brazil play a weakened team.

This is SA, though, so anything could happen.

It was moved due to civil unrest in Colombia, covid in Argentina and there are issues with civil unrest and covid in Brazil.

For those not aware, Covid is hitting SA badly at the moment.

Ah fair enough but they are still happy to play WC qualifiers? If its such an issue for the players surely they wouldn’t have travelled for them.

It appears that Argentina have been allowed to be based in Buenos Aires rather than Brazil. Seems this was the compromise so they would compete.

You just don't get this in European football:

The Brazilian Football Confederation president is now being accused of sexual harrassment by an employee, who alleges that he made her eat a dog biscuit.

President of the Brazilian Football Federation has been suspended from his position.
