Data scientist at SFA

Who the fck is going to come from an experienced data background (ideally in an elite football environment) for the sort of wage you'd get stacking shelves

Wow, what an insulting salary. I'd consider taking below market rate to work in football, but not that much of a drop. No way they are getting any remotely qualified candidates

£25k is a joke for what they have as essential criteria. They could maybe get a graduate at that level but not with any decent experience.

I remember recruiting a data scientist about 10 years ago on £35k and struggling to get a decent standard of applicant.

What's tinpot about it? The salary is poor, that's for sure.

The salary is less than what an engineering graduate gets.

They're not filling that position with anyone good. That kind of salary will be limited to a guy off just us tims that's good with excel.

You're looking at double that for a Data Scientist that knows what they're doing.

My son in law had a sports analyst role related to a professional Rugby team. The money was hopeless and got him a foot in the door after his degree to something much better but nobody in their right mind would stay in it long term.

That would be a very good first job for a graduate. However, if they're seriously looking for someone with proper experience in that field, for that salary, then they're on to plums.

A great stepping stone job for a graduate, though.
Reads like they’re looking for experience…

• Established experience undertaking end-to-end data engineering, science and analysis activities in a similar data-driven role.

• Experience of exploratory data analysis using statistical techniques and data visualisation tools to explore and understand datasets.

• Experience producing engaging dashboards and/or reports using data visualization tools. such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms.

• Strong understanding of statistical modelling and regression analysis techniques.

They will struggle to get anyone at that rate. Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Statistics, experience of data analysis and willing to work evenings and weekends too? And all for £25k? They might get a foreign applicant desperate for something but even that will be a struggle.

"Analyse large datasets to identify patterns, trends, opportunities and insights that can drive performance decisions."

Identify the pattern of assistance. The mhank's suspicious lack of yellow/red cards and our suspicious lack of penalties.

Pay peanuts, get monkeys. Everyone thinks analytics is a silver bullet, but half-arsing it is pointless, if not actively destructive. In all likelihood, wasting £25k/year is the best case scenario here. They're more likely to end up with bad data fuelling bad insights and bad decision making.

Nail on head. People can make data look like whatever they want, but with the calibre of applicant that salary will attract they're going to end up with shite data and making shite decisions.

I work in a very similar field and the data scientists at my place are on £80-90k (in London). £25k isn’t even acceptable for a data analyst.

All applicants must have a cover letter from their local priest, or better still, be approved by Herr Lawell.

I worked with a team of data scientists and engineers about 20 years ago and they were on I’ve £50-60k them (London based)
Even entry level analysts were on £25/30k

Quite frankly that wage is an insult. The only applicants they'll be getting are either going to be recent graduates, folk who are desperate and / or overseas applicants.

A pal got headhunted and offered a similar role at Liverpool who were his boyhood club and turned it down as the wage was embarrassing, but there's enough folk who want their foot in the door to football that they can take advantage of it.
For an industry with so much money football appears to have an issue with paying fair/market level wages.

Have read it recently regarding a few different job roles and all have the same salary issues. Largely taking advantage of those who are desperate to get a foot in.

Also free tickets for every Scotland game, cup semi and final games. Free travel and accommodation with the team when playing abroad. Oh!!! and don't forget the free blazer.

Salary is only about £20k less than the average for that role lol, I’m sure they’ll be flooded with experienced applicants.
Never seen a job ad for a 'Scientist' that didn't require a suitable qualification in a 'Science'. Could be just a runner type job or is set low because they already have a person (internally) in mind. Seen that in places I've worked.
