Dundee unhappy with ref after head clash

Below is from BBC website. Very poor from the ref. Head knocks are meant to result in a stop of play and attention to players. Seems SFA refs don't care for player safety. Midweek in the Hibs v scum game Walsh's first thought was to award a penalty, not the welfare of players. Both refs should be stood down ubtil they have received retraining.

Dundee have voiced "serious concerns" to the Scottish FA over play not being stopped immediately following Michael Mellon's head injury during Sunday's Premiership match against St Johnstone.

Dundee manager Tony Docherty described the injury, which left striker Mellon unconscious at Dens Park, as "almost life-endangering".
Mellon required treatment following a clash of heads with St Johnstone captain Liam Gordon, with referee David Munro failing to stop play immediately.

The game was eventually stopped after Dundee's club doctor, Derek McCormack, ran on to the pitch, with a lengthy delay while the player received treatment.

Dundee confirmed the 20-year-old has now been released from hospital and the club have contacted the SFA to outline their concerns.

"Michael sustained a significant head injury in yesterday's match against St Johnstone, but thanks to the swift intervention by Dr McCormack and the medical team, his condition was stabilised and he was transferred to Ninewells Hospital Accident and Emergency Department," the club said in a statement.

"Following specialist investigations, he was discharged with appropriate head injury advice. He will continue his recovery under the supervision of the club's medical team in accordance with concussion protocols.

"The club is today writing to the Scottish FA in the strongest terms to express its serious concerns that play was not stopped to allow immediate attention to Michael after what was clearly a dreadful head clash."

Dundee came from behind to win 2-1 thanks to a late header from Jordan McGhee.

The SFA has been approached for comment.

Not seen that example but it seems like an outlier as I would say it’s almost always stopped and many times unnecessarily.

Another Celtic referee another glaring error by the sounds

I watched this game (bet on Dundee) and have to say the ref was a fcukin disgrace with his inaction here. Both players were down holding heads...

Seemed it was going to be a day of injustices in this game until the deserved Dundee winner.

St Johnstone hardly a dirty team either, couldn't pick a single one of their players for a booking prior to the game with Phillips ( 6 yellows in 20) not in the squad, so settled on Dundee win and in play betting.

Did the st Johnston guy foul the Dundee player ?

We could be dealing with a careless thicko as imo the Danilo one was a deliberate late challenge

Maybe the ref was as pissed off ad I get when seeing a player fall to the ground holding his head or face, get the game stopped, then make a great recovery one minute later.
Unfortunately, there was always somebody who was going to be a “cry wolf” victim.
Until the rule becomes that your game is ended, we’ll still have to tolerate the chancers.

A head knock should be an automatic, off the pitch, set amount of time, 2 minutes or so, and checked by a doctor.

Nobody would fake a head knock again and the serious incidents would get the proper attention.

I believe the NFL has a protocol where if a head knock the player MUST be taken to "a tent" and checked over by doctor, no fannying about on the park as we do and then being allowed to carry on playing. The other big difference with NFL is that the clock is stopped so there is no running down time (like Sheep did 3 times at Ibrox last midweek).

Ref was probably listening to the end of the Celtic game on his headset to notice the two players down.

Remember we had two players down with head injuries at the midden and madden played in till they scored before stopping play.
A lot of players just fall and hold their heads at the moment to stop play so if a referee or doctor could prove they're at it a red card would stop it. But genuine head or even any serious injury play should be stopped for safety of players. Seems this one was really bad ref ignored it. Sack the incompetent refs and linesmen. Was this not the ref who was involved in the debacle goal against thistle last season. He's shite anyway

Did the doctor run on the pitch while the game was going? It reads like that.

The ref should have to explain himself here, it’s possible he’s thought the players were at it, but with head knocks you can’t take the risk.
Yes the club doc noticed something was wrong and ran onto pitch, with game still playing. Read story elsewhere and Dundee are writing to sfa about it.

This is why I say any player feigning a head injury should be hunted. Every head injury should have a off field assessment from a doctor, before the player is allowed to resume playing

So the same as in the Hibs v Celtic game yet a foul was given resulting in a penalty for the scum. Highlights the different standards of refereeing
Danilo scored. Should the ref have disallowed the goal and awarded a penalty?
Oops, just saw post#23.

Compare and contrast that refereeing to that gimpy wee lady's front bottom Walsh last week blowing up nearly every time a sheep player went to ground.

Unlike Bobby Madden who stopped play at the piggery with Hearts in possession when a scum player had laddered his stockings whilst allowing an offside goal for the home team, with his recent sycophantic decisions on last weeks talking points obviously has taken Lawwells Lira.

Nothing anywhere that says that.

In England don't they have to go off for a minimum 30 seconds whenever the physio comes on?

Doesn't seem to happen in Scotland.....

Wonder how busy Aberdeen physio would have been last week if that were the case!

I've been saying this for years.
Receive a head knock, off the field for five minutes.
It would stop cheating in an instant.
I don't think that's the solution. Would encourage players who got a head knock to get up quickly and hope the ref didn't notice.

Not sure what the right solution is though. As there are definitely a lot of stoppages caused by players cynically going down holding their head when nothing is wrong, just because they know it will guarantee play getting stopped

Scotland has a small band of 'elite' referees at hand and each of them are utter shyte.

We need change.
Head of Referees should be out the door.

When you consider how many elite referees retire over the world some really should be considered for top jobs at foreign FAs.

Scotland's refs are currently not fit for purpose and although we operate with a small pool to choose from there's no excuses for some of the shocking decisions they make.

Unfortunately change only happens when it's wanted.

a ref is responsible for player welfare. I'd say that when a player is unconscious play should be stopped
I agree entirely but that’s not what you said. There is a common misconception that play stops for a ‘head knock’. The Laws of the Game do not say that.

The authorities need to clamp down on the abuse of this rule by teams who encourage their players to do down feigning a head knock to get play stopped. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

The problem is that the refs never seem to get it right .Dhon Robertson last week took every opportunity to stop the game when the sheep players decided to lie down.

This is the reason that I get pissed off by play acting players who get hit on the chest/leg/knee and go down holding their head to get the game stopped, they are putting their fellow players at risk when a genuine head injury occurs. Dolly players done this at least twice last week.
