European Super League Officially Announced - All Comments In This Thread - Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Man United, Spurs & Chelsea all out of it

Good.

Money has too much influence in football. TV companies dictating schedules. Sponsorship reducing players and clubs to marketing tools. Owners using teams as ego boosting play things or as pr armour for regimes with questionable records.

Let them %^*& off to their money league. Let the rest of us go back to enjoying proper football.

Sad. But about time. Let them go.

UEFA should retain some dignity and think of their other members rather than indulging a small number.
Letting them go turns the current Champions League into the Europa League. This should never be allowed to happen in a million years. If this does come to pass the game is truly up as ever being seen as a sporting content. It’s nothing more than sports-themed entertainment

UEFA can't really stop them though can they?. If anything they would threaten players saying they can't play for there country if in that league.

Brilliant news. Should hopefully speed up the death of football fingers crossed. UEFA has 55 members, the other 50 should breakaway now and form a real Champions League again. Realistically how many big clubs are in those 5 leagues. How many are bigger than Ajax or Benfica? 10 at most.

What about the absolutely terrible "All new Champions League"? Is this something else?
Yes this is something else.

The Super League development is a direct challenge to Uefa which is to announce its new 36-team Champions League format on Monday, to come into force from 2024.

The European governing body had thought it had seen off the threat of a breakaway but is now involved in urgent talks with other football bodies about the new development.

Uefa had succeeded in winning the support of the European Club Association (ECA) board and the European Leagues but it emerged today that the Super League threat had been revived with the ECA chairman Andrea Agnelli, also the Juventus president, appearing to throw his hat in with the breakaway clubs led by Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Other members of the ECA board, who had agreed to the new Champions League format, and Uefa officials have attempted to contact Agnelli since Saturday evening but one source said he “has gone off the radar”.

The Super League proposals include:

The 15 founder clubs sharing an initial 3.5billion (£3.1billion) euro “infrastructure grant” ranging from £310million to £89million per club which can be spent on stadiums, training facilities or “to replace lost stadium-related revenues due to Covid-19”.

The format would see two groups of 10 clubs who play home and away, with the top four from each group going through to two-legged quarter-finals, semi-finals and a one-legged final.

Matches would be midweek and clubs would still play in domestic leagues.

Clubs would have rights to show four matches a season on their own the digital platforms across the world

Income from TV and sponsorship would favour the founding clubs: 32.5% of the pot would be shared equally between the 15 clubs, and another 32.5% between all Super League clubs including the five qualifiers.

20% of the pot would be merit money “distributed in the same manner as the current English Premier League merit-based system” according to where clubs finish in the competition or group if they don’t make the knock-out stage.

The remaining 15% would a “commercial share based on club awareness”.

A cap of 55% of revenues permitted to be spent on salaries and transfers (net).

A ‘Financial Sustainability Group’ would monitor clubs’ spending.

Thats exactly what they should do and get FIFA to back them. There will be some players who want to play in the world cup and EUFA tournaments.
Good money can still be made without playing for the teams who break away

Then it's win win for the club's. They would prefer not letting them go for internationals. The euros and world cups takes place without the elite players. Try selling that to the sponsors.

And how much money will fifa and uefa competitions be able to generate if they ban England, Germany, Spain et all?

Bye bye close the doors on the way oot. These clubs i use to enjoy watching in starting to despise.

Some top players won't like the idea too so see what happens

The Champions League is already sports entertainment. You don't need to be champions to qualify. Uefa would rather see 4th from England, Spain or Germany qualify that Rangers. The CL is broken and has been for years.

European super league plans set to be announced - six English teams involved, Sky News understands

Six English teams are expected to be part of plans for a breakaway European super league, with an announcement due tonight, Sky News understands.

Among the English clubs involved are Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The project has been launched to rival UEFA's Champions League format which currently dominates European football.

Sky News' City editor Mark Kleinman said: "My understanding is that 12 clubs from across Europe including the six biggest English clubs have now signed up to this new format.

"The others include Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid."

Kleinman added: "The new league includes staggering sums of money that will be handed to the participating clubs. About $6bn has been committed to this new project by the American bank JP Morgan.

"And this will come after European clubs' finances have been hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic which is one of the reasons why so many of Europe's biggest clubs have decided that now is the right time to form a European super league after years of on/off discussions about such a project."

This concerns me from a rangers prospective . We all love the big European nights and if the big teams arnt in it it won’t be the same. The champions league prize money will drop and we won’t get 40 mil for qualifying in future

We should be looking to get involved in this, either at the top level or a level below with clubs from Belgium, Portugal, Netherlands, etc. There is no future in Scottish football as has been shown over the last few decades.
