Ex-Rangers man Andy Gray says Celtic shouldn't be handed league as title race is 'too close to call'

Time we had a few on our side putting the counter argument (though still trivial in the grand scheme of things at the moment.)

ANDY GRAY insists Celtic can't be crowned champions early - because the title race is "too close to call".

Football is at a standstill as the world deals with the ongoing coroanvirus crisis which continues to claim thousands of lives each day.

While Uefa have ambitious plans to conclude the 2019/20 season by the end of June, the date is widely believed to be unrealistic.

That could force governing bodies to make a decision on whether the current campaign should be abandoned.

It's understood SPFL and SFA chiefs are NOT interested in voiding the season and would prefer to ratify final positions in all four divisions as they stand.

That would see Celtic, Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers declared title winners.

Yet despite the Hoops topping the Premiership by 13 points with eight games to play, Gray believes the destination of the trophy isn't guaranteed.

Discussing whether leagues should be voided and titles handed out, Liverpool fan Richard Keys told sidekick Gray: "Celtic shouldn't win in Scotland either."

Former Rangers and Scotland striker Gray replied: "No Championship that's unfinished should be declared finished.

"In Scotland, it's even closer [compared to England].

"It's close and it's not close as it might be or should be.

"But it's too close to call still [in regards to handing out the title]."

Well done Andy, but now watch the mock offended criticise his opinion due to his departure from Sky football.

If we collapsed like we did after the winter break, anyone can.

It's that simple.

Consider it this way, Rangers win at Ibrox cutting the gap to 10, Celtic then draw at the Hobos allowing Rangers to narrow it to 8 then 5 with the game in hand against St Johnstone. Win at the Piggery after the split and suddenly it's 2 points and arse-clench time. Stranger things...

Well said Andy. Handing them the title is the worst outcome for everyone. Handing it to them would give them a tainted title (another one), that the records would show they didn’t actually win.

We have only just started with this virus, the experts are talking about the damage that will be done to the country, and the state those who survive will be in, this could destroy our football as we know it, or even the country, for that lot to start their propaganda about a league, title is them to a tee, witness Greenock yesterday the Cheers bar, they do not give a F--K about anyone bar themselves, ever.

I think the comments from the various cheerleaders of either team has now become irrelevant, although not as distasteful as the captain, manager and chief executive of one team demanding they should be "awarded" the title.
It is now an arguement for another day or even year.
Stewart Robertson is on record saying Rangers will not be found wanting when defending the club's position, and has been ably assisted by the late demented Father O' Burns videoed statement, which has probably delivered the coup de grace to any title claim they may have harboured.

Would they have won it? Most likely. Did they win it? No.

If they are handed it by default because “they were gonna win it anyway” then I’m done. Games a bogey. I‘ll tune in once a season to watch them get pumped out of Europe.
May as well give them the cup too!!

We have it in our hands to get the gap to 4 points with a further 6 games left each. Of course it’s not over.

Yet Timmy and other morons compare it to Liverpool etc who are 25 points clear haha.
There is one word in your post that’s relevant: “morons”

The voice of reason. If the roles were reversed I would think it was a probability that we would win the league but not a certainty.
If the season was voided then I would be annoyed but fully understand the rationale behind the decision.

I don't see how they can hand them the title without massively exposing the corruption within the game in Scotland.

If the SPFL/SFA try and sneak them a championship they haven’t won then the 1939/40 title should be officially recognised in Rangers favour as well with the criteria being you only need to be in first place at the time the league was called off.

But I honestly can’t see anything other than a Europe wide ruling on this and it taken out of the hands of the SPFL. You’d need to be a very brave man in Spain to tell millions of Madrid fans they won’t get the title being 2 points behind and with 11 to play.

The SPFL and SFA would prefer to hand their team a title, that's a real surprise that.

Make no mistake, this septic team are fckn shite,,they can collapse just as easily as we did after the break.. NOTHING is over till its over..

Totally agree, well need to follow what the big boys do. I think they will try to continue the season, but how and when no one knows. Cant see anyone getting handed anything. Our rhabid mob will surely try but i think uefa/fifa will need to step in and give a ruling.

More ex players need to come out with this. The mentally challenged message of them getting this title is coming in big style with journalists and ex scum players.
We’re being conditioned to accept this without a fight. Time to fight back and say it’s not won if it’s not complete.
Again I feel we’re sleep walking into this.

As much as it is the common sense point of view, it’s good to see someone in our corner for a change!

They have to explain what is an acceptable points gap to go ahead and dish out the title to them.

Is it 13 point? 10? 5? 1? A goal?

There is no acceptable answer to this question.

Arguments based on whether or not a club would have won the league are irrelevant from a legal standpoint.

They're purely subjective.

The crucial fact is that the required number of fixtures was not fulfilled and it is possible Celtic could be caught, Hearts escape relegation, etc.

The rules as they stand mean that Celtic did not win the title.

The only way round this (if that's what this article is suggesting) is that the rules are changed after the event - surely a terrible precedent.

Awarding a team a title when the League programme has not been completed is just morally and ethically wrong. The SPFL would not allow it in a League game that is abandoned and unfinished and the team in front can be caught.

Correct. We win our last 9 games and Shameless FC need to win 5 of their other 6 games to win the league. It's not a gimme. It may look unlikely, but so did Liverpool winning the CL when 3-0 down at half time, or Leicester winning the league and of course, there's the last 4 games of helicopter Sunday season, where we overturned a 5 point deficit. There are countless other examples where 'unlikely' scenarios have come to pass and plenty were a helluva lot more unlikely than us winning the league from our current position.

Gray is talking crap, the race is not close at all. If Celtic win the 1st game back which should be OF game, then they are as good as uncatchable.

However if Rangers were to win the 1st OF game, as well as our game in hand, then the gap is cut to only 7 pts and possibilty of a shock might be on the cards.

To have any chance we would also have to win 2nd OF game at Piggery but the scheduling of that game could make in meaningless. It would have to be no later than the 1st or 2nd game after the split, any later, say 4th or 5th game, Scum could have already secured the title before game played.

"If".

You cannot award a league title, or European places and relegations, on if.

The league title is close"if" we beat them twice and win our game in hand.

Always liked Andy, he's the right sort :)

Win the game in hand and beat Celtic twice and it’s 4 points. Not a chance should this title be handed to them with Rangers having 9 games left.

Celtic have a proud history of title collapses.

The decision will be made at some time how to sort this out but I always look at it if the situation was reversed, to get some balance on it. Let's say they collapsed and we had the lead they had and John Harston or any ex Player came out with what Andy Gray said. It would be a 50 pager on here calling him every name under the sun and please don't tell me it wouldn't be!
