Explain that?

We do not know how to break down teams who camp in against us.

Its a completely different game domestically to what we are able to do in Europe

First answer nails it as usual.

The game is more physical in Scotland and we are not a physical team.

We need more attacking options.

Hopefully this is the start of something big from Iganame.

I get what you’re saying but even tonight we were pressing much higher up than what we do against the dross in Scotland.
Do it in Scotland and teams crumble.
I agree, it’s almost like it’s a chore for some of these players when it comes to playing against the dross in Scotland, that’s what they were signed for, we’ll see what Rangers we get on Sunday. They have to earn the right in the SPL it’s an old saying but it’s true. Just don’t think we have enough characters/winners in the team at the moment when the chips are down to be aggressive both pressing and tackling. Most of the teams in Scotland can’t string 2 passes together but we make them look good with our passive play at times. We also need a focal point up front, hopefully Igmane gets a run now.

Rangers in Europe.

Clement hasn’t a notion domestically.

I remain Clement out big time.

As good as we were tonight that Nice defence were a different level bad
This makes me wonder. Gio had the same issue domestically. Teams camping in and struggling to break them down. You would think Alex Rae would be guiding him on the domestic game having played here. Baffling.

Why such an abject performance at the weekend to tonight?

Questions have to be asked? Why can't these individuals not handle the SPL?

Now I am back to thinking maybe Phillipe Clement is the man ? Or should I wait to the weekend first?

The energy they showed tonight was amazing. Players tonight showed how good they can be

Let's see it more often.

Supporting Rangers is like a roller coaster.
See circa 2022 under Gio and Europe.
I still don’t understand how we were imperious in Europe and pish domestically.

Scientists need to study it.

100% agree with everything you say bud.

I think the weight of expectation domestically plus the way teams set up means we're like a different team in Europe.
I think it’s this as well.

I don’t think we can handle pressure situations very well. No expectations, no pressure and it’s easier. Also we struggle to break down 10 or 11 men behind the ball domestically, but are ok against ok’ish teams in Europe who give us space and time.

Tonight we had multiple 2 on 1, 3 on 1 and even 4 on 1 breakaways. We'd be lucky to see one of those opportunities between 3 domestic games. Instead of just defenders to get by, domestically we also need to get through their full midfield and at the very least one of their attackers as soon as we reach 30 yards out. For me that is the difference, get a quick transition in Europe the field is wide open, get one in Scotland and we still have at the very least 6 players to get past.

I posted a thread last week saying “‘I don’t care if we beat Nice , I want him out . I’ve not changed my mind

Gio, and Gerrard has similar issues, having a top striker is key to putting away jobber spl teams.

This is it in a nutshell.

Clement isn't the first to struggle and won't be the last. Gio couldn't do it and Gerrard struggled as well. In Europe when we don't need to dominate the ball and break teams down we're a breath of fresh air.

Btw what's the deal with Nice?

They pumped a team 8-0 in France, they've taken points off Monaco and PSG this season. Yet tonight their defence looked like an amateur team.

They did look awful tbh. They had a lot of injuries apparently

That said we were excellent and it should have been more

Teams come to Ibrox to stop us playing.
They put all their energy and strategy into stopping us playing.
Tonight Nice were awful but *they attacked us*
That’s the major difference.
Our players aren’t fast enough or technically skilled to break down a compacted defence comprised of 9 players.
Tonight was a “normal” game of football with two sides trying to win.
Natural gaps appeared that just don’t against negative teams like Dundee United

I'm going to say Igamane again. He's a rough diamond and not the finished article but he did a lot of things that Danilo did a couple of weeks ago and drew defenders to him and pulled players out of position and created space for others. And while not exactly clinical, he's not afraid to score
In Scotland we should at least try two play two up front. Hamza and Danilo as you say pulling defenders all over the place

Remember the Walter days of 442 at home and "anti football" in Europe?
Lot more to it than that and Walter did have plenty bad days in Europe, even in the second spell. But no one else has ever really understood it like he did, has to be 2 different approaches. And you need some hard bastrds who know the league in scotland.

And during that second spell he won us three titles out of four full seasons - the season he didn't win it he took us to a European final instead and won us both domestic trophies.

All done on a shoestring budget compared to the filth across the city.

An outstanding manager. I miss him terribly.

Absolutely. Was amazing at the time but even more impressive to look back on. Do anything for his like again.

Don’t say that on here, you’ll get plenty of shit.

A forum full of posters who want to try and talk down what Walter Smith achieved, it’s fucking disgusting.

Scottish referees destroy games, at least where we are concerned. Continuing blowing for fouls for the slightest touch, breaking up play, failing to punish opposition fouls...

Our players enjoy European football. Domestic football is a chore for all involved.

Who is talking it down? Which threads?

Genuinely never seen anything like that on here.

Walter has a God-like status among the fans and rightly so.
I’ve honestly seen people defending Clement by using the defence of ‘well, Walter Smith’s football was constantly terrible so why are you criticising Clement?’ level of argument.

I can’t believe you’ve not seen it much, you’re missing out.

It’s so fucking disrespectful, annoys me.

Walter’s teams were good but also capable of a fight.

There’s a reason why Hemdani played pretty much always in Europe.

This team are good but just not up for a battle in Scotland.

Clement is a European manager who knows European football.

Clement is a European manager who has yet come to grips with the bizarre nature of Scottish football. Probably never will and won't regret it.

We need to finish on top of the league and have to get a manager who will take us there, as much as I like winning in Europe.

Team selections are baffling
And we have no real.leaders outfield when the going gets tough.
I am still not convinced this is the turning point.
He will start with dessers on Sunday......wait and see

We haven't had enough players available. We need a number of different skill sets in the squad to be successful in all the different types of games we face.

That is partly due to injuries, but also partly due to requiring some better players as well, which will take another couple of windows.

Said it a few times as did Souness 40 years ago….

Need one team for Scotland and another for Europe.

Perhaps……and hear me out on this…..we should have two managers and (almost two squads). One for Europe and the other for Scotland.

Derek McInnes and guys like Shankland etc for the SPFL and Clement and Igamane for Europe.

Either that or just play the wimmin in the Premier League and be done with it B-)

Dessers is a big part of the problem. You saw the team slow down when he came on

It's almost a different sport domestically.

The game in Scotland is refereed completely differently and has been for decades. That has led to players adopting a style of play and deploying 'tactics' that don't exist elsewhere. You could say, well how do Celtic manage then? I would venture that they are refereed to a different standard as a result of a concerted campaign they have cleverly led for a long time.

Then there is the hatred. Despite only winning one title since 2011, we are still the team that everyone wants to beat. And that leads to opposition players and managers putting everything on the line.

In Europe, the opposition plays in a fashion that suits our style, there isn't this weird obsession with us from the other team and their fans, and the games are refereed more normally.

And, also, our manager and players probably enjoy and prioritise European matches due to all of the above.
