INVITATION TO YOUR MEMBERS TO JOIN A BATTLE OF THE SOMME COMMEMORATIVE PARADE IN GLASGOW - Tuesday, 2 July 2024
District 49 would like to invite members of your lodge to join us for our annual commemoration of the Battle of the Somme.
The parade will marshal at 6.45pm for a strict 7pm march off from our halls at 25 Maxwell Road.
We do hope you will be able to join us and the Young Loyalists Pollok Flute Band on that evening. It would be handy, if possible, if lodge secretaries could indicate to us your anticipated numbers.
Members of the ABOD are also welcome to attend with the usual provision that those who are members of both the ABOD and OO wear Orange cokours.

Battle of the Somme commemoration parade - District 49 Glasgow Southside - Tuesday evening. Many thanks to all who participated in marking the sacrifice on the Somme. 75% of the adult male membership of the Glasgow Orange Order volunteered for service. Glasgow as a city provided over 100,000 men for His Majesty's Forces in the Great War - the highest proportion of any city in the UK.

Bump this thread after having the pleasure of meeting Robert today, acquired some reading material from him today and spent some time with him, a true gentleman

Glasgow Southside District No.49 on parade with the Comber Crimson Star flute band and the Millar Memorial flute band from Belfast. This year marked 50 years of the Millar accompanying LOL 440 Lights of Glasgow (a lodge formed by lamplighters in the city) at the Glasgow Boyne celebrations.

Fantastic pictures brother .what a day in Glasgow .n they say people don't want it

LOL800 are once again delighted to parade on the 12th day with the brethren of LOL699, Ballykelly, County Londonderry. The day commenced with a solemn parade through the village led by a lone piper and single drummer to the Church of Ireland when a memorial garden is situated.
The memorial garden honours UDR, RUC, British Army and civilians murdered by terrorists. The first soldier remembered on the County Londonderry memorial bannerette is Joseph Forsythe- a UDR man and member of 699 murdered in a bombing.
At the conclusion of the memorial service the piper played a lament.
As ever in Ballykelly the celebration of the 12th of July started with a tribute to all those who died in defence of the freedom that King William secured for us over 300 years ago.
Enjoy your day.

I've always like the name of this lodge as it's a wee bit unusual.

The picture was taken in the mid 80s.

The lodge merged with another but I believe kept their name and the number of the other lodge during the fusion.

Peculiarly the article fails to note the Archbishop's attack on the Protestant community during his "Punch A Pape" speech in which he claimed this was a sport regularly indulged in - despite the fact no-one had ever heard of such a practice.

He resigned the Archbishop's chair in 2012 for "the usual reasons."

A very sensible article from Billy Kay in 2004 noting that the West's new view of missionary endeavour is not shared in Africa.

Some picture I took, mostly of bands for lodges form the Republic, at a County Fermanagh 12th of July parade in the mid 80s.

I can't recall if it was in Enniskillen of Brookeborough.

At their most recent meeting six new members of LOL Glasgow 800 received their RAP certificates which helped mark a resurgence of the lodge with nine new members in the past year.

Glasgow Southside District 49’s annual Remembrance Service will take place on Sunday at 3pm in the Queen Elizabeth memorial hall.

The Reverend Peter Davage will preside with Brother Ian Frazer providing the musical accompaniment.

All Brothers, Sisters and Friends are welcome and refreshments will be served at the conclusion.

Is this book still available from the links provided? Looking to get a copy for a Christmas present this year.

This is a MUST listen for all of us determined to promote, build and strengthen Orangeism. This hour or so from our CEO demonstrates why he is in that position. A message presented that comes across as reasonable and worthy of sympathy, and yet remains intrinsically strong and confident in its identity.

From the Canadian Orange historian Beian McConnell -

From my recent vacation to Australia and visit to The Leach Orange Centre, thought you might be interested in seeing this short video I prepared

This is a wee except from a 1980s documentary about a republican band in Glaagow - it’s very pro IrA.
There’s a deranged part of it where one of the members claims that his brother in law claimed he’d always have a job in the shipyard so long as he wore a sash! :p

Badge issued to mark the 50 anniversary of Loyal Orange Lodge 800

LOL 800 was formed 50 years ago and has acted mostly as a charitable lodge. 1975 was the year Glasgow celebrated the granting of a Royal Burgh Charter 800 years before.

Initial members of the lodge included twi Labour and two Tory councillors, in addition to the Vice Chairman of Rangers Football Club Jack Gillespie and the football agent Bill McMurdo.

Over the years the lodge has engaged in many charitable and political initiatives as well as developing a great friendship with LOL 699 from Ballykelly, County Londonderry.

The lodge was formed in 1975. That year was filled with events commemorating the 800th anniversary of the granting of Glasgow's burgh charter in 1175. The lodge incorporates the fish, bell, bird and tree from Glasgow's coat of arms which was used in the official logo to mark the 800 years.

The badge has been approved for sale by the County of Glasgow and the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland.
