Fernando Torres retires aged 35

Great player who Atletico Madrid and Liverpool got the best out of. He was clearly motivated by money and he was never really the same after leaving Liverpool, despite winning the CL at Chelsea. He wasn’t the same player.

Halfwit on talksport this morning ask Ally if he would be remembered as the great player at Liverpool or the dud at Chelsea. I would think it would be the double Euro winning world Cup winning Champions league winning Europa league winning player that would be remembered lol

There’s a quote in the paper from Fernando saying that he had only initially prolonged his career in the hope of partnering up with his striking hero Kris Boyd. But as Boydy was hanging the boots up he felt the time was right to bow out also.

Was immense (sometimes) won pretty much everything a player dreams of winning as well, loved him.

What a player he was at Atletico and Liverpool. Him and David Villa were a brilliant partnership for Spain at Euro 2008.

%^*&'s sake...my thread was chopped but not merged and it had all his stats. Games, goals etc.

How ludicrous from admin.

Not even saved in my profile etc...just gone.

To try and give us perspective and save us from admin:

Played in 4 countries...never prolific apart from with Liverpool (65 in 102 games) with 198 goals in 568 games. Only won ONE domestic trophy and he didn't play in the game!! 2012 FA Cup final.

He did win
2011 CL - played 6 minutes + extra time
2012 EL - played and scored against Benfica
2018 EL - brought on for final bow in last minute for Atleti fans

Internationally he got 38 goals in 110 caps:
2010 WC - played last 14 minutes
2008 EC - played from start and scored
2012 EC - came on as sub in 75th minute and scored

Best striker in the world when he was at Liverpool?

World Cup 2010 took something out of him, never seemed the same after that!

Apparently he was injured near the end of the 2009/10 season, and despite warnings from the Liverpool staff he decided to go to South Africa with his injury. That obviously exacerbated it and ruined him as a player

Suppose we've seen it before when players burst on the scene as teenagers they burn out quite quickly.

Owen (injuries obv didn't help), Rooney, Raul, Torres...all done by the age of ~30

Did a tour of the new Athletico Madrid stadium last year and he's a god to them. A full on museum in the stadium dedicated to Fernando.

Tremendous career

El Nino was arguably the best striker in the world while he was at Liverpool, before the 2010 World Cup.

He seemed to lose that blistering pace he had after the 2010 world cup. He was poor for Liverpool after that World Cup, then Chelsea spunked £50 million on him in January.

Does anyone remember the old poster who was a big Liverpool fan, Younggun_Stu?

Used to laugh when he’d talk about potential clubs for Torres, and he whittled down to the only possible destinations being Italy or Barca (because he wouldn’t join any of Liverpool’s PL rivals because he loved the club too much, and he wouldn’t join Madrid because he’s an Atletico man). How I laughed when he signed for Chelsea :D

Absolute quality player in his prime but so injury prone it was unbelievable.

It’s often forgotten he was on the slide before leaving Liverpool which makes the 50 million Chelsea skunked on him even funnier.

He's had a great career - didn't seem to work out for him much after Liverpool. The move to Chelsea didn't seem right. He had a bit of luck going back to Madrid for a bit but probably the right time for him to retire.

His goal against barca in champ league was amazing. Barca were hammering chelsea and he caught the break and went up and scored. Amazing. And the rest is history

Not sure Raul falls into that category though he did tail off a bit certainly
