Fifa president Gianni Infantino says biennial World Cup can help save African lives

FIFA don’t seem to bothered with migrant workers being treated a effective slave labour and working in dangerous conditions when building white elephant sports arenas for their tournaments, maybe the same workers can aspire to dying under the African sky.

That should be a prison sentence purely on the basis that it is one of the stupidest things someone from FIFA has said and that's an achievement.

well that's one way to devaule it. one of the reasons the world cup is such a big deal is because of the long waiting time

I've done aid work in refugee camps on the continent in the past, and I honestly don't recall anyone saying to me that they fled their country because the world cup didn't happen regularly enough. There were mentions of war, famine, persecution based on religion/ethnic background/sexual orientation, but never "not enough world cups"

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has suggested reforms to football's calendar could help prevent Africans from risking their lives to migrate.

World football's governing body has put forward plans which include staging a World Cup every two years.

Infantino says more regular World Cups can help provide hope for some nations.

"We need to give opportunities and we need to give dignity, not by giving charity, but by allowing the rest of the world to participate," he said.

Infantino added: "We need to give hope to Africans so they don't need to cross the Mediterranean in order to find, maybe, a better life, but more probably death in the sea."

More than 23,000 people are missing as a result of attempts to cross the Mediterranean according to data gathered by the Missing Migrants Project.

Uefa, Europe's major leagues and South American football's governing body Conmebol have opposed plans for a biennial World Cup, while Caf, the African governing body, has given its backing.

Fifa delegates have been told switching the staging of football's biggest international tournament would generate £3.3bn in additional revenue over a four-year cycle.
Wow.

What a colossal prick.

That has to be the most stupid comment ever from a FIFA President. Should be sent to sort out the Russian/Ukraine crisis. That would be fun.

Laughable idea.
Most football fans are more interested in their individual clubs and don’t want top players unnecessarily burned out.

The super league teams had right idea, take power from UEFA and ultimately FIFA but sadly went about it in the wrong way.
A challenge to these 2 is long overdue. The way they commandeer players is ridiculous as it is but now they want them every 2 years. GTF! Clubs need to fight back on this

Wasn’t that long ago the World Cup was on Africa and that made %^*& all of a difference to them and it was in their country, I think I read recently most of the stadiums they spunked money into are never used.
Hopefully someone tells him to %^*& off and jam the whole World Cup trophy up his arse.
Worse thing out of African World Cup involvement is those fuckin vuvuzelas.
