Germany - The Perfect Football Away Trip

I've been to Dusseldorf for hockey. The 2017 Sonderzug away day I went to was Mannheim to Dusseldorf. Via private charter train, river cruiser and police escorted buses to make sure we made face off.

That trip was like nothing I've ever experienced.
Eh? Sounds intense. Is it a big rivalry?

How much all in roughly to travel over? Always wanted to go over but never really priced it up

Is it easy enough to get tickets for games?

We were 80 for the flight.
Tickets ended up the same but they were tier 1 tickets top stand bang on the half way but to be honest I don't think there is a bad seat in the house.
4 people in an air bnb 520.
Spending is pretty much on par with here.

I registered for their secondary ticketing for these. There was the odd spare outside the ground also.

Well worth it for us and the nephew loved it!!

germany is great for watching fitba been to dusseldorf
munchen and stuttgart , was also impressed with moscow
in november

Not really. Our hockey rivalries for Mannheim are probably Schwenninger ("local" derby), Berlin (big team) and Munich (Red Bull money scumbags). Cologne too because of their relative closeness. If Frankfurt ever make it back to the DEL top fight then they're going to be big rivals in the Rhine/Neckar area.

Sonderzugs are special trips. The Mannheim Fanprojekt operates away day travel to as many games as possible throughout the season. One game a year is deemed to be the special trip. Rather than hiring a bus, the fans group charters it's own train. 2017 was particularly special because the charter train took us as far as Cologne. We then had a charter boat to take us from Cologne to Dusseldorf. Train met us at Dusseldorf and took us home.

Been to Berlin , Munich , Bremen, Stuttgart Great trips never any hassle supporting Rangers and in Berlin was at Hertha v Cologne 70,000 plus 8,000 Cologne fans at it in the Olympic Stadion fantastic atmosphere everyone drinking 21euro for ticket couldn’t beat it

Right,my mate has just messaged me and has the green light for holidays approved the first weekend in October, sticking mine in now and getting Dusseldorf booked tonight.
Skyscanner for flights and Booking.com looking the best way of going about it,once the fixture lists for next season come out I'll contact whatever game we want to go to and buy tickets directly, hopefully it;s the same as Hamburg who are fantastic to deal with from their own ticket office.

Been to Hamburg a few times, Berlin, Mainz and Frankfurt, Leipzig with Rangers.

Poland is also great for a weekend away on the bevy and taking in a game of football.

Loved my football trips to Germany. The whole system is geared up for fans to have a good day out.

Btw is anyone on that Groundhopping app that counts up all the grounds you have been to across the world and you can keep a record of scores etc? If you post your profile I will add you on it.

Been to Germany 3 times with rangers, Stuttgart twice (stadium was being redeveloped and the first time especially with the temporary bridge was , when consider German reputation for procedure / things been done in a proper manner , was a death trap

Stuttgart itself, definitely one day is enough there, Mercedes Benz & porche museums worth a visit but nothing else there

Bremen (stayed in Hamburg went on the buses to Bremen from there , we went to hamburg’s game the night before (pity they got put out on sway goals , enjoyed visit to Hamburg / their stadium though

Also been to hertha Berlin game at the Olympic stadium and that is recommended, fantastic setup & of course Berlin is amazing place to visit

Also been in cologne , frankfurt & to music festivals in Germany , always enjoyed it / people have always been great

Careful how far ahead you book mate. German t.v. release a list of live games every few months and change dates & times.

Off to see Hertha vs Fortuna Dusseldorf in a couple of weeks as part of a stag do. We contacted the club and they said they can arrange tickets together for the 14-or-so of us going. Can anyone share experiences of the matchday in Berlin?

I’m going to Hertha v Hannover 96 next month. Looking forward to experiencing the German football culture. Any decent bars near the ground you recommend for pre-match?

Saw us eight times in Germany first time Cologne 67,won 3-0at home, lost 3-0 sway,Henderson scored in extra time to put us through.IIRC,it would have been decided by a toss of the coin mostly had to sit with the home fans .never a problem with the German fans, even in Bremen after McGregor's save:).would recommended it highly.

Absolutely mate been caught out before after the winter break hence why we traveled all the way to Wolfsburg the first time. The beauty of Düsseldorf is you’re within forty minutes train to several stadiums and we’re not too fussy about what game we go to.
Logistically it should be a piece of piss.

My football tickets are always the last thing I book on a Germany trip. I'm there for hockey so as long as I get to my hockey games then the football is a bonus. I'm happy to travel about 60 minutes by train and I'm not worried about what level of football I get. With that in mind, I'm never really short of at least 1 game worth going to.

It does unfortunately mean that I've yet to get to Kaiserslautern or to a Waldhof game. Those 2 are probably next on my list ahead of a Mainz game. I'm pretty keen to see exactly what kind of level Waldhof are these days.

I was at 1860 Munich at home to Stuttgart in 2003 as part of an Oktoberfest trip. Was great. Inexpensive compared to prices here, good atmosphere, great food and beers.

We’re of the mind that it’s all about the game experience mate and would have no qualms about a first, second or even a third division game and I think that speaks volumes about how Germany is miles ahead of the British game. Not to mention transport and costs of attending games also.
Different class imo

Totally.

I've spoken with a few Waldhof fans at their stall at the Christmas market when I've been over. You wouldn't get a Rangers stall at any events in Glasgow.

Been to Wolfsburg - dull town
Stuttgart - good
Munich - good
Dortmund - good
Leverkusen - dull but had good time in cologne before the game
Schalke - big crowd, poor atmosphere
Hamburg - been several times and a great time usually spoiled by the actual football in the last few years

Shirley the football on show doesn't ACTUALLY spoil your trip no matter how poor it is!?

I was at our last game we played against Stuttgart in the champions league and it was my first time in Germany and I loved every second of it.flew into Frankfurt spent a couple of hours there before getting the train down to Stuttgart.Had our first beer in Stuttgart outside a department store that sold beer in there cafe which was a bit surreal.i was blown away by the atmosphere generated in the stadium they had the stadium announcer standing on a podium in front of the ultra section who was pumping up the crowd. After the game they had a really nice touch when we got to the station to go back into the city ctr they had a message on the notice board “thank you Glasgow Rangers fans safe journey home”

I've watched us in Stuttgart all 3 times, Kaiserslautern, Bremen, Hannover and Hamburg. I've also been to Aachen and Cologne four or five times each, Berlin, Frankfurt, Moenchengladbach and Dusseldorf for trips without a game.

Germany is definitely my favourite Euro trip. Been to Cologne, Munich, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Kaiserslautern and win, lose or draw (well lose or draw in my case!) it's always been a fantastic experience.

I was at Hertha v Hamburg last season chief.

Bought my ticket the day before from the Hertha fan shop in the main city train station, no problem whatsoever (EUR 23). Hertha won, incidentally, in a fairly humdrum game with Hamburg really poor that day.

Great, historic stadium with big beer gardens outside and, of course, good atmosphere. It was around 25-30 minutes on the U-bahn from Alexanderplatz IIRC. A simple enough journey and your match ticket ensures free travel.

Do make some time to wander around the circumference of the Olympiastadion too and absorb the (admittedly quite ominous) history of the place.

Then, beer, wurst and large pretzels... lecker!

I count nine teams all easily within an hours train journey from Dusseldorf, pretty confident we'll get to see some footy! :))

Meanwhile back at Ibrox the UB are getting slagged off for trying to create some of this at Ibrox.

I used to live halfway between Darmstadt and Frankfurt and used to go watch Eintracht and Darmstadt from time to time, beer flowed like wine, fans were daft and the atmosphere was great - German football is great.

Cos even if the football is shit, there's always more beer, and the beer is actually good.

I use the app all the time, love it! Currently at 103 grounds and counting (17 of those in Germany)

Nice mini mascot photos, Bazza!

Wish there was such an app around when I used to visit lots of grounds abroad in the 90s.

Whats your username and I'll add you on it? I'm only at about 64. Not sure if theres a direct correlation between now having a girlfriend and not getting to travel to footbal...

Been to Germany many times and every time the hospitality was second to none. Some people think the Germans are arrogant. I have never found that to be the case.
I was in Hanover with the Army and went into a wee bar which was a regular for the forces. The guy who owned the bar was an ex POW. He told me he was Montgomery's chef while he was in captivity.
I told him my Dad was in the navy and was on the Atlantic Convoys protecting supply ships from the U-boats.
Long story short:
He went upstairs and came down with his personal mug that was issued to him and he gave it to me.

He was a great cook too, I had Veal Schnitzel for the first time and it was delish.

Have been to see us at Cologne (twice), Dusseldorf, Munchengladbach and Munich. Unfortunately we never scored in anyof these games, although we did qualify at Dusseldorf with a 0-0 result.
Despite the lack of goals for us, each trip was excellent and Germany is my favourite away venue.

Not too many near the ground but there’s plenty beer kiosks outside the ground with food stalls etc found it a good atmosphere just mingling around everyone drinking with there own carry outs or getting beer from the kiosks we did go to a bar/ cafe after the game about a quarter of a mile from stadium it was a Hertha fan bar forget the name of it
