Germany - The Perfect Football Away Trip

Having travelled across Europe supporting the Gers and thinking of the fan experience, I wanted to ask your opinion.

Going to Spain or Italy we ( (away fans) are treated like shite by the police and the authorities.

Compare and contrast how away fans are treated in Germany, despite them having more passionate fans than the likes of Italy and Spain.

I was reading about how Liverpool fans were afforded such a good time in Munich, despite knocking their side out, while in Spain and Italy, we have been treated repeatedly like shite, even before the game.

The set up over there is fantastic, I went to Wolfsburg v Mainz last year and it was brilliant, good grub and a beer outside the stadium, a wee card that you pre load inside the stadium where you can buy food and drink etc, atmosphere was pretty good as well bit not as good as Ibrox when rocking!

I have been to Dortmund and Munich for games, both with the card thing. Germany just gets football right.

Fans are treated with respect and respond accordingly.

I love it.

Really need to get to some more games over there, only done a few. Friend of mine is moving to Germany soon so that’ll help.

Free transport, fans congregating before the game enjoying themselves, drinking, treated with respect by stewards & authoritys, safe standing & fantastic vocal supports no matter how big or small the club.

Genuine fan culture.

been all over germany with both rangers and the national side. great trips, infrastructure, stadia etc but i like the off the beaten track ones better tbh. iceland, lithuania, albania, slovenia and such. have'nt done russia and don't plan to. going to san marino and khazakstan though.

Haven’t been to Germany since Cologne in the early 80s. We were beaten 5-0 but I still remember that trip fondly. Well apart from the feckin bus journey which I’d never do again.
Been meaning for a few years now to get over to a Hamburg game but can never find suitable dates.
Hopefully we will draw a German club in Europe next season.:)

Been to Wolfsburg - dull town
Stuttgart - good
Munich - good
Dortmund - good
Leverkusen - dull but had good time in cologne before the game
Schalke - big crowd, poor atmosphere
Hamburg - been several times and a great time usually spoiled by the actual football in the last few years

Been to Hamburg and Wolfsburg although thankfully in the away end with the Hannover fans at the latter.Wolfsburg is like a ghost town, but we were only there for the game then back to Hamburg again.
Looking to book up for Düsseldorf this October though and can’t wait

We to Union Berlin game a few weeks back. Amazing 15k plus on the terraces, fans singing all game. Can walk to game with beers and then stand on terraces with beers ,cheap food.

I love the football over in Germany. I go over regularly for football weekends. I keep a thread on here upto date with pictures everytime I've been over

I love Germany - just about everything is fantastic.
Been to quite a few games going back to the 1970s
Our particular team is Dynamo Dresden - a club that has some torrid times since German reunification.
Being British seems to make most Germans even more friendly and helpful.
Several years ago I was in Dresden with my son and one day England were playing Brazil so we were looking for a pub that may be showing it.
Amazingly we found one and the customers decided to divide in to two - half cheering England and half Brazil. It ended in a draw and we didn't buy a bier all afternoon - everything on the house.

Was at Wiesbaden vs 1860 Munich on Saturday. The Munich fans were escorted up to the stadium from the station but everyone was mixing at the ground and having a few beers. Great atmosphere inside the ground, primarily thanks to the Munich ultras who took one end of the stadium and sang for just about the whole game.

I’ve also been to a Hertha Berlin game, great experience. Keen to go across and see more games.

Was at a Dusseldorf game earlier in the season, was part of a stag do but the game just didn't interest me at all. We were up in the sticks at the opposite end from the Ultras so was devoid of atmosphere and the football was awful. Stadium was soulless compared to what we have at Ibrox.

In contrast to that I was at Hannover for the Germany v Northern Ireland game. Loved the whole experience, great atmosphere in the ground, able to watch the match with good beer and the food was superb.

Hoping to take in a Hamburg game in the near future.

Been to cologne dusseldorf Hamburg Berlin leverkusen schalke Duisburg Stuttgart kiaserlouten Dortmund Munich loved it every time didn't enjoy Italy or Spain

Been all over Europe following the Gets, and Germany is without a doubt the best. Good people, good stadiums, good beer, simply the best. Worst place? Possibly Romania or France.

Dusseldorf is meant to be great
Yes been twice. Good base great nightlife. Went to see Koln v dresden and Levercauson v Koln but stayed in dussoldorf. Remember your
ticket includes free train travel within a certain area. Dussoldorf good for Koln Dortmond Bayern Levercauson. Shalke and fortune D.

Was at the Munich vs Wolfsburg game at the weekend. Outstanding and seeing 6 goals was a bonus.

As said above they just know how to make a great day of it, in the stadium ages before beers and pretzels the size of your head.

Tremendous trip and would recommend to anyone!!

Looking at it from the other way has anyone ever heard what a foreign fan's experience of Ibrox /Glasgow is?

Spoke to a German lad, he thought the atmosphere was shite but at least you could piss and have a fag at the same time.

:D

Bern to Bielefeld twice and it was brilliant

Beer in the stadium, good food on sale, fans encouraged to hang around post match to have food and a pint and watch player interviews on TV screens.

In short, you’re treated like a valued customer, not cattle.

I can’t wait for my next visit to Germany which I hope will be Hamburg to see HSV

As i said before - this might be your opinion that everything in Germany is so great and everybody is treated with respect. Well in reality it isnt.

German Fans are moaning for years and years now that they are NOT being treated good by their clubs and the police. The are small fights around the stadiums every week - like last week with Bayern and Wolfsburg for example.

Seeing some ultras jumping around and singing some song over and over again is not my type of "atmosphere" either. And even then - take those kids away and you have the same atmosphere as in Malta or Luxemburg. Only with bigger crowds. This is proven every time some of the Ultra groups have their protests and stay away from their section.

If you like a beer and standing then Germany might be great for a trip. But its not all greener on the other side of the fence if you are a real supporter and travel all around the country with your colours.

Saying that - there are thousands of Germans who love to visit England and games around London for example. Funnily enough they say the same as you say about Germany.

Sounds like you love a trip and fair play to you mate but how can u follow Scotland and be amongst so many Rangers haters?

Not a dig at you, each to there own a suppose just curious how you do it? I spend my time and money on Rangers, hate international football during the season

I love Germany, they are incredibly friendly and polite people.

Like a good few people on here I’ve seen Rangers play there a number of times and have always been treated fairly and respectfully by the police as well.

I remember one time, I’m sure it was Munich, the bears were drinking in Max Schmelling’s (sp) pub, it was mobbed and we all ended up taking over this street, fair play to the police they just blocked the traffic at each end of the street and let us get on with it.

They were laughing there heads off when this German pish and becks couple went past while the Bears serenaded them

I thought Austria was amazing for the Rapid game. Police were superb and it was a great city.

Didn't see any of that at all. There were also Wolfsburg fans in with full colours dotted around the stadium which I found unusual, also the following day on the stadium tour the shop was full of Wolfsburg fans in the shop buying Bayern gear. Could you imagine that here?

Also good luck getting into standing there the guy said on the tour that's the cheapest season ticket, around 150 pounds, the waiting list is 20 years for that section.

Could you arrange for some ST holders at Ibrox to visit? We've got 40k plastic seat lovers that need educating.

Am the same really liked Maribor loved Osijek once inside the ground trying to get in was a different story. If you get the chance to do Russia do it, would go back in a heartbeat. Pretty expensive to get there getting a visa and that but it’s a cracking place.

How much all in roughly to travel over? Always wanted to go over but never really priced it up

Is it easy enough to get tickets for games?

I've been to Frankfurt and Stuttgart for football. Frankfurt was the better of the 2 by a significant margin but both were great experiences.

Buy online and print at home for the 2 grounds I've been to.

I fly Lufthansa when I go on a hockey trip. Edinburgh to Frankfurt return for about £150. Football tickets for a good seat will be between £40 and £50. There are cheaper tickets but they're usually taken early by locals. Stehplatz are almost always sold out for the ultras groups. Your ticket for the game includes local travel to and from the ground.

Depending on the schedule you can get 2 or 3 games in a single weekend. Dusseldorf area has a good few teams at various levels to consider but I go further south. I stay in Mannheim for ice hockey so only ever go to a Saturday afternoon game but I have the choice of Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Mainz, Darmstadt, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe and the Waldhof Mannheim. If TV schedules worked out then you could do a Friday night TV game, Saturday game and Sunday TV game. Koln isn't even that far for a Saturday trip from Frankfurt but train tickets for the ICE service would add a cost.

My sport trips to Mannheim are usually £150 for flights, £260 for 4 nights in a hotel, £30 for 2 hockey games, £40 for a Bundesliga game and about £100 on train travel during my stay (Airport to Mannheim and then Mannheim to a football game).

All in its probably about £600 before spending money. That's me not staying in Frankfurt or Stuttgart so I have extra train costs.

Interesting perspective.

I think the crowds in Germany are far better than in England. I don’t there are any clubs that have what you would call a consistently good atmosphere, week in week out.

The policing is also very good, which allows fans to have fun.

Düsseldorf is a nice city. You can get to Köln, Dortmund, Moenchengladbach and Gelsenkirchen very easily.

I've been to Dusseldorf for hockey. The 2017 Sonderzug away day I went to was Mannheim to Dusseldorf. Via private charter train, river cruiser and police escorted buses to make sure we made face off.

That trip was like nothing I've ever experienced.
