Gerrard Using Lessons Learned Under Benitez In Europe

Well worth a read Bears.

Steven Gerrard was lectured in the art of the European victory during a six-year period of his Liverpool career.

He explained: 'Rafa Benitez was the master of defending away in Europe, being hard to play against, then using the power of Anfield whether it be the first or second leg.'

It is clear Gerrard is using lessons learned under the Spanish tactician and Champions League winner to form the template for his bid to reach the Europa League group stages at the first attempt as manager of Rangers.

The Ibrox team have, indeed, been hard to play against on the road as clean sheets in Macedonia, Croatia then Slovenia on Thursday night proved.

And, at home, capacity crowds have helped lift a new-look side over the line as they find their way in European qualifying together en route to the play-off round.

Russian side FC Ufa head for Glasgow to experience that atmosphere this week, with Gerrard confident visitors to Ibrox should again feel some trepidation.

That factor, he believes, is all an inevitable result of his suddenly turning Rangers into an imposing, organised and tactically disciplined outfit for the two-legged ties.

Gerrard will always recall the demands placed on him by Benitez - who guided Liverpool to two Champions League finals - unforgettably winning the first in a comeback from 3-0 down against AC Milan in Istanbul.

Now the Ibrox boss is passing on those expectations to his players in the hope of taking Rangers on a long European run.

'You try to dig into experiences as a player and of the coaches that you worked under,' said the Liverpool legend.

'Individual performances don't always get you the right result in Europe. It's about the team, the structure.

'Rafa was the master at it - and he certainly improved that side of my game massively. He helped me in terms of becoming a better player, tactically. When he first got me, maybe I couldn't be trusted fully in positional terms.

'Perhaps I had too much energy and would lose my slot at an important time. Maybe I had too much enthusiasm to go forward and score goals. It could have been a bit of ego.

'But now, I think the important thing for me was that teams used to fancy playing against Rangers. They would fancy themselves to create and score goals.

'It was important to try to make teams fear us. So when you come up against Rangers, we're hard to beat, organised and have players prepared to put bodies on the line to protect the goal.

'I think we have that at the moment, but it's important we continue it going forward for every challenge we face.'

Celtic and Hibernian put five goals past a dismal Rangers defence in the final month of last season, leading to Gerrard targeting a summer of specialist work.

That task has been executed pleasingly, not only by key defensive recruits Allan McGregor, Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Jon Flanagan but grafters throughout his team.

'It was certainly an area I knew when I came in that I had to address and strengthen, to try to build a strong spine through the team,' said Gerrard.

'What we do is try to get a lot of information across to the player. So, as a staff, we try to do a lot of classroom work in terms of organisation and positioning.

'We have done a lot of individual work and double sessions on that. Fitness is also a big part of it.

'Covering ground, sliding in, making sure you win your foot race, making sure you gets lots of people pressing together and being compact. There's lots the players have taken on board. I suppose it's difficult to put a timescale on it.

'But in terms of what they have been given so far and how well they have done, then it has surprised me a bit.

'If you have good players willing to learn and who know what high standards look like, then maybe it shouldn't be a surprise.

'Hopefully, we can maybe add one more in that area as well because I do feel we are a bit light, certainly at the heart of our back four.'

To that end, Gerrard has revealed the Rangers board are entirely in tune with his need for further squad strengthening to prevent a potential Euro campaign damaging domestic ambitions.

If they knock out FC Ufa, then handling a frequent Thursday-Sunday match schedule will continue until mid-December.

Gerrard wishes to not only add back-up to the central defensive position, but land Kyle Lafferty to complete his set of strikers, taking his signing streak to 13. 'I think the board are experienced and wise enough to know that, if we are to get through, the schedule will be tough for another chunk of the season,' he added. 'They understand.

'We've presented to them where we feel we're a little bit short. It's in the heart of the defence and the forward area.

'We're hoping we can get them (new signings) done in time because I'll then be very confident we have a squad of players to compete and face the challenges ahead.

'I want European nights back here at Ibrox. The players do. They all mention it when you speak to them.

'The fans want it, the board want it. It's my job to try to make that happen. If that's detrimental to us domestically, we'll have to wait and see.

'This is the reason why I want to try to add to the squad, have a squad that is capable of handling the schedule so that I can tweak and make changes and it does not affect that level in terms of performance.'

The talk, before he arrived, was that he was going to be Klopp Mk2 and that would be the type of football we played.

Instead what we have is the pressing of Klopp's teams and the pragmatism and tactical strength of Benitez.

We have Gerrard. And it's bloody delicious.

I shudder when i think of the last few years, no plan B, unfit, no tactical awareness, no homework and compare it today

I was at the Chelsea game yesterday and I said at this rate well be lucky to hold onto him for two seasons, albeit he'll hopefully get the Champions League experience with us.

I was describing the team formation and tactical awareness he's put into the first XI already and then had two watch two teams of multi million pound acquisitions play like school kids when defending and unable to change to match the threats...suddenly two years looked optimismistic.

Apart from the tactics the distinctive addition to this squad is the fact we have a good few leaders in very crucial positions; these are players who put others first, with a very strong team ethic; even our gk is a leader. This squad is developing a character that can only get stronger, with experience of playing in big games and handling the pressure involved in these. Gerrard was first and foremost a leader, and this squad is being made in his image; he is getting players who want to win just as much as he does.

It is glorious.
Early days yet, but I'm hoping SG and Rangers can rub the smug, self-satisfied, done-nothing, media experts collective coupons in the f ucking dirt. Where they f ucking belong. Especially Spiers and English - both utterly silent since Gerrard has pi55ed on their chips. I wonder if they'll decide they only write about golf and rugby now?

Imagine, as a player in another team, having to first play out past Morelos. Then you've gotta get by Coulibaly and Jack. Then after that you're faced with Goldson and Katic. And if, by some miracle, you're past all of them you come face to face with Allan McGregor. You'd be tempted to chuck it before you even shoot.

I remember Brian Clough describing Burns, Lloyd and Shilton similarly. Two huge, big, dirty b@stards and the best goalie possible. Gerrard just GETS IT.

I think we will be the most difficult team to score against in this league.

i think we all know that he could never turn down the liverpool. if he keeps this up, he will be a shoe on if and when Klopp moves on. Klopp, in turn, would find it hard to turn down Barca or Madrid. Hopefully as long as we have Mark Allen in it for the long term, we can build continuity.

Win at home, grind out a draw away.

Do that in every game in Europe and we’re laughing. Anyone who moans about ‘lack of entertainment’ has an opinion totally irrelevant to me.

Great article and we seeing how the management team have changed the bad practice and introduced new modern techniques and vastly improved fitness levels

If we can get past UFA I’m sure the board will allow another 2/3 new players to be brought into the team

I'm very excited, it's looking promising but i fear we have done better tgan expected this early that a lot of beaes are expecting a title this year.
I think we need to all calm down a little, as hard as it is.

There are a lot of similarities in his management style to Diego Simeone. His Atletico team for years has been famous for being very difficult to break down, aggressive with and without the ball, players willing to run through walls for each other and the manager.

It’s a style I’ve long admired and it’s incredible to watch it develop here at Ibrox after the last few years we’ve had.

So refreshing to get that sort of honest plain speaking from a manager. He just lays it out exactly what he’s trying to do and why without any daft management speak, riddles and suchlike.

The board should be bringing in 2 or 3 any way to help win the league.
Our net spend is not that high now with windasss and john money plus 4 home euro nights plus 1.5 million for the rounds so far.
We just need that final push from them to have a real chance this season why stop short

Dead against Gerrard at first, thought we are/were too unstable as a Club to try something like that after Warbs and Pedro. Won round when I seen the hype in the English media, but even now surely he's surpassing expectations of most people? I'm astounded at the turnaround.

My thoughts too.

It’s all very promising but for me still early days.

I still remember the hype of the early months of Warburton’s tenure.

I was going to write about how excited we were under Warburton they first few months, but couldn't be arsed with the abuse I'd get for comparing the 2 haha.

We moved up a level under Warburton, the hype was justified to some extent. But we’d moved up from a very poor level.

It’s clear we’ve moved up another level now from the Murty / Pedro / Warburton days, but it’s a fair point we’ve a long way to go as promising as the signs are.

Osijek and Maribor are no mugs and we deserved to win both ties, I think these results show we are not far off a reasonable standard of Rangers team again.

Mate text me on Thursday night saying the Rangers performance away in Maribor reminded him of Liverpool under Rafa Benitez.

A mixture of Rafa Benitez, Walter Smith with Steven Gerrard's own management skills.

Outstanding.

Think he could be here for a while, watching him at the final whistle in Maribor he looked delighted, the manager gets it.
