Great Twitter thread explains the Wigan debacle

If I'm reading that correctly, the bet on Wigan's relegation must be worth significantly more than £45m.

I find it staggering that even in the Asian markets that bets are being laid with that kind of liability.

Even if it was several sizeable bets with different companies or exchanges, it surely attracts attention?

Yeah, I read that earlier. Sounds very far fetched but why the %^*& would you spend £41m on a club to immediately stop funding it and put it into administration, likely losing the money invested? That just doesn't make any sense at all. There's still a lot to come out on this and it's worth keeping an eye on as it's going to get very interesting.

Seems an absolute hatchet job. Unfortunately the club will be relegated from the points deduction and it’ll be too late to do anything about it.

Frightening read that, just goes to show how corrupt the business of football really is.

faceless investors and companies will always rule and what can be done about it?

looks like the EFL knew about this, at the bare minimum, or they are in fact in on it in some way. That itself would be shocking.

feel rotten for Wigan, local club who did very well over the last decade, And they have now been shafted very very badly by the usual faceless investors who don’t give 2 shits about the club.

hope they come out the other side.

I don't know what the ante-post price on relegation was, but before admin Wigan were 100/1 against going down.

Feel for Wigan supporters but there's a lot in that thread that doesn't add up.

Won't be the first club where madmen take to the internet with crackpot theories.

No evidence of a bet placed

for that whole situation to be a reality it hinges on this bet

as I said before I’m guttted for the Wigan fans and I hope there clubs comes out of this

Ye Chinese/Hong Kong getting scam backed heavy to go down but form was to good . Administration and points deducted regulation make get better .

There is far too much of this underhand stuff going on. Someone needs to get a grip but I fear this will happen time and time again until a proper giant (financially) are hit like a man utd etc.

Surely if there's any substance to it then it won't be too hard to track down who's been sticking millions on Wigan to get relegated?

The FA have got to be held somewhat responsible for approving it in the first place.
That's my thinking aswell the Whyte takeover should never have been allowed to occur if proper strict legislation for club owners was enforced the vetting procedure's need updated

Was listening to The Totally Football Show podcast today and they talked about this. It’s a total disgrace and utterly astounding that the EFL have allowed this to happen.

You'd be surprised just how much of the world gambling percentage is in Asia. (Maybe not when you consider every casino has Asian translations available)

The money floating about there is crazy, even the “pro” gamblers in Europe use Asia because you can get away with a lot more.

Sounds murky as hell but are we to believe the supposed bet in the Phillipines trumps the £45m spunked out by the Chinese to buy the club and ensure relegation? Hell of a sum to double down on your own bet or am I missing something?

I'm with you mate, if they are gambling those numbers there is no way it's their last £100m and they need to make sure it comes in! If you can gamble £100m then you have another £100m somewhere.

So the EFL guy would be equivalent of Doncaster?
He has heard rumours of a large bet on Wigan to be relegated. Heads must be rolling with this fit and proper person test they do ( or don't do by the looks of it). Would love it if they won a few more games and beat the drop!

Bet or no bet theres something dodgy going on. With the 12 point deduction I think wigan will only be 4 points off safety. Hope they stay up

It was a carve up. He was not paying tax on staff wages for a year and HMRC didn't bother their arse.

Looks like no only Wigan that have been duped but also the football league who sanctioned the sale of the club from one party to another.

There were huge issues in the championship before Covid, see Sheffield Wed and Derby as examples, there be quite a number of administrations in the pipeline.

I think the fit and proper test thing (unless linked with us) is basically how much money can you say you have and will invest in the club, without any real way of backing it up. It reminds me of a conversation I had with someone about the old golf courses in Scotland having a minimum handicap required to play, and someone telling me that the Asian tourists who come over and play, their handicap number is their credit card number. All checks go out the window when someone is willing to splash the cash that they may or may not have.

Is it not the EFL who govern the league and sanction owners via fit and proper person tests? I don’t think the FA are involved.

Having seen him on Twitter, it struck me that Lee McCulloch played for Motherwell, Rangers and Wigan and all of them have went into admin in recent times.

The plus side to Jigs streak is that he is currently a coach at Dundee United!

Listening to radio about it yesterday and a Wigan fan was saying that the company they were sold to 4 weeks ago was either owned by the guy who owned the club or recently owned by him, dodgy as hell.

Did they spend any money though or did it just go round in a circle?
