Greg Stewart deal close. Hastie and Souttar could follow

RANGERS boss Steven Gerrard is closing in on a move for Aberdeen forward Greg Stewart. And he could add further Premiership experience to his squad as the Gers eye deals for John Souttar and Jake Hastie.

Gerrard completed a pre-contract agreement with Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones during the January window and the Northern Irishman could now be reunited with his former Rugby Park team-mate.

Stewart cut short his Killie spell to return to Aberdeen in January but Rangers are now on the verge of bringing him to Ibrox on a free when his Birmingham contract expires.

The 29-year-old has scored nine goals - including the equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Ibrox in October - so far this term but has struggled for form since rejoining the Dons.

Boss Gerrard is keen to add firepower to his squad ahead of a second crack at the Premiership title and a move for Motherwell kid Hastie could now be back on the cards.

Rangers became frustrated in their pursuit of Hastie earlier this month as talks dragged on and it appeared as though the deal was dead.

Hastie has attracted interest from Major League Soccer side Atlanta United but his Gers switch could now be rekindled as he prepares to leave Fir Park at the end of the season.

Moves for Stewart and Hastie would give Gerrard further options in the final third but defensive cover is also being sought this summer and Hearts stopper Souttar has emerged as a potential recruit.

The Jambos could demand around £2million this summer and Rangers have yet to test their resolve after identifying the highly-rated 22-year-old as a signing target.

Gerrard is keen to add further strength and depth to his Ibrox ranks this summer and midfielder Scott Arfield is confident the Gers are on track in their pursuit of silverware.

“We have got players in here, we had a large turnover at the start of the season, and even in January with a couple of players coming in, it takes time for it all to cement,” he said. “To get a trophy this year probably would have been a bonus with the amount of players that came in and out, but next season we are definitely there for this.

“The enthusiasm is there. And it has to be, because you are representing millions of people around the planet that support this football club.

“That is why it is so important for the last five games, the two previous and the next five coming, to really go at it and to set us up for next year.

“We are in a good position at the minute and it is up to us to make it into a great one.

“People are going to talk about how many points Celtic have won the league by this year, but I think it’s very evident in the last two games, particularly the one at Parkhead, that the mentality was there.

“It was a mistake for us from a personal point of view and, if that mistake doesn’t happen, we dominated that game for large periods.

“And the game at Ibrox, which we dominated for the full 90 minutes, duly shows that we’re on course for something here.

“The fact of the matter is we came away with no trophies this season, which is a disappointment for this club. When you come through these doors you need to win trophies and that’s how you’re going to be judged.

“I’ve got a four-year contract, three left after this, and people can judge me at the end of that, but I know I’ll have some trophies.”

None of these players make a difference to our best starting 11 or 16 at the moment so what’s the point?

Jones I think is better than Candeias and could be a cracking signing but Souter for Katic? Really?

Stewart has failed at Aberdeen twice now and hasn't got himself anywhere near the Birmingham team in his time there. We need far better than him to progress.
I'be learned to have a higher bar than that when judging a player, and I suspect in your hearts of Hearts you do too. Stewart can kick a ball; anyone who knows anything about football would recognise this.

I can’t see Souttar being an easy deal to make.

Sounds like renewal time to me, throw out some names so the fans know we’re planning to do business.
Why not use moon beams rather than achievable targets?

Souttar's a relatively new name but Hastie & Stewart have been linked for a few months so not renewal related.

Plus, they're hardly names that'd be used to do that!

Agree on your first point.
Second point not so much. Hardly an incentive to buy season tickets.

Love Scott Arfield, he seems to have the mentality it requires. Great comments and I hope he gets his hands on plenty of trophies in those 3 more years as well as enjoying more wins over the scum.

Just reiterating what most are saying but I don't see us mounting a serious challenge next year with these types of signings. We talk about needing 3-4 players of genuine quality and are bringing in Jones and possibly making moves for these players. Doesn't look like SG is going to be given the funds we fans want him to have to be able to bring in decent quality

Stewart will prove to be a decent acquisition on a free.

Playing in behind the striker in SPL games he will offer us a bit of guile that we have badly lacked this season.

I don’t expect him to be our first pick number 10 as I think we will sign someone else to play there as first pick but Stewart will get his fair share of minutes.

See post #8.

Worrall and possibly McAuley will potentially be away in the summer, we need another couple of bodies at the back and while I like Katic the fact he’s been in and out this season to me is an indication that he isn’t nailed on as a starter in the manager’s eyes.

I’m with you in that I’ve never particularly rated Souttar but he is young enough and if the price is right probably worth the risk. Hearts will be murder to deal with as per usual though.

Stewart may prove to the the creative number 10 we’ve been crying out for.

Couldn’t care less about his age - Gary Mcallister was still doing it for Liverpool at 36. Give the man a chance. I reckon we’ve unearthed a gem.

To go against the grain on this thread I can see the logic of all three signings.

People saying Soutar for Katic have missed the point. We lose two Centre halves at the end of the season.

The two forwards give us something different. We have been crying out for a right winger who can come inside and score. Looks like the management appreciate that and have decided to get two.

Stewart isn’t quick and doesn’t suit the kick and rush McInness plays but anybody that doesn’t think he has quality hasn’t been watching. He’ll be really useful v teams that sit in.

Gonna STFU and use your brain

Are some being deliberately obtuse?

Jones has signed a pre-contract which would also be the case with Stewart & Hastie.

The quality will come in the summer with money being spent.

Hastie - One of the future
Soutter- Back up for me so if the fee was right i would take him
Stewart- Poor signing nearly 30 and no better than what we was hoping for a real marquee signing in his position

I think part of the issue here (apart from all the experts telling us just about every player is sh1te) is given some of the OTT things King said in his sales pitch for season tickets, being linked with players in the SPL is going to rub people up the wrong way and they’ll feel justified in perpetually greeting like little girls.

It’s gonna be a long summer.

Stevie G told you we're not making one?

Let's be brutally honest. If we do sign these players then we still won't compete with the filth. Apart from our goalkeeper and centre forward all their players are better and they have strength in depth compared to us. A sad state of affairs as they are not very good as their performances in Europe this season showed. Sadly Scottish football is a very poor standard.

We have Tav, why did we sign Polster & Flanagan?

You're right. We should just have a starting XI and get the rest to fuck.
Well how many Games has Polster played since he signed?? Been a waste of wages so far and I suspect Stewart would be similar

If he plans to bring in a top class player in their then what's the point in signing Stewart?

IF hE PLANS to BRInG iN a TOP cLasS playEr in ThEIr thEN wHAt's THe POiNT iN sIgnIng STewARt?
