The sports journalists in this country really have no clue about football, idf he actually believes this Scotland team are just 2 positions short from being able to qualify then he is deluded imo

Lots of defenders are what are needed to start with not just a right back ffs

I listened to the show this morning as a Podcast. Mark Guidi speaks massive amounts of shite, especially last night.

He was discussing having airport style security at Celtic Park to deter against people bringing coins into the stadium to throw at players. Only one issue with that, Mark - there are food stalls in the stadium that give CHANGE to paper notes. They actually distribute coins inside the ground you idiot .

Goalkeeper, RB, 2 x CBs and a first choice number 9.
David Marshall is fine, he's one of the better players in that team.

Scotland don't need players, they need an identity. Are we a counter attacking team that plays in transitions, or do we look to dominate possession?

Right now, we are neither. Until we work out what we want to be, it's impossible to tell how many players we need to achieve that.

if you think Mulgrew is a decent CB then there is something wrong with you, Robertson must hate the sight of seeing him in a Scotland shirt when he's used to much better players at Liverpool

Think most would identify Scotland very easily, a shower of shite with zero hope of qualifying for tournaments ever again

Scotland are international minnows these days. Cannon fodder for most decent nations and some not so decent ones. If Russia scored 4 or 5 tonight, would anyone really be surprised?

the number 2 is correct as we’re 2 games away from qualifying via the playoffs, don’t think anyone sees us actually winning the Semi final though let alone the final.

realistically Scotland need a right back, 2 CBs and a striker at the very least.

Problems start right at the top.

SFA and SPFL stuffed with diddy club idiots allowing mental decisions to be made about our national game.

Plus, the refereeing is horrendous. Skill gets blottered out of the game up here

That's not the point I'm making. I'm talking about on the pitch.

The way Scotland try to play is a mess. We pick a midfield full of good football players, two wide players that are capable in multiple aspects of the game, full backs who love to overlap and attack.

We then partner this with a big tall striker who can't hold the ball up to play the midfielders in, and instead just flicks it on when there are no midfield runners getting beyond him.

Coupled with centre backs that are very, very poor at distributing from the back, and it's no surprise that the team doesn't work.

Get a couple of centre backs comfortable with the ball at their feet, and a striker capable of good hold-up play, and you're on to something.

to be fair Wales, Ireland have qualified for tournaments with a similar makeup of squads.

Scotland has 1 top player, 3 or 4 decent players and the rest is poor.

Marshall was fine 6 years ago, he's lost form since

We need a goalkeeper, a right back, 2 decent centre halfs, and a striker at least.

Need more like 20 players

I don't doubt one year we'll have a golden generation like Belgium is having recently, but it's not anytime soon

If the two positions are the manager and the team then he’s right. Without reading the article I’m pretty sure that wasn’t what he meant though.

We're not good enough to dominate possession. We need to shape our play like that of the Cyprus', Estonias etc. We can do damage attacking but not conceding should be our priority.

People forget this when slagging Robertson for Scotland. To go from playing beside VVD every week to Mulgrew or Grant fkn Hanley is a preposterous drop off

The problem is that the majority of our players are not suited to playing on the counter.

If you were going to build a counter-attacking side for Scotland, you'd probably go:

Marshall
?? ?? McKenna Robertson
Jack McTominay McGinn
?? ?? Fraser
There's a shitload of holes in that team. You'd probably pick Forrest for RW because he has the attributes for it, but he's never played in a counter-attacking team in his life so we've no idea if he's any good at it.

Rangers and Celtic produce the bulk of Scotlands players traditionally, but as the relative quality of these sides have faded compared to world football they no longer produce the type of player that Scotland requires.
