Henning Berg

I'm just curious - why the reluctance to consider Berg?

I don't know enough about him. His last two jobs, on the face of it, seem to have ended a little harshly. Was there more to it than his team finishing second?

Played for us, worked under good managers, knows the game in Britain, has a decent record as a manager. He wouldn't be my first choice, but just wondering why he's an awful candidate to some?

Henning Berg wants to make a return to Rangers after applying for the vacant manager’s job.

The Norwegian finished his playing career at Ibrox 13 years ago and now believes he can succeed Pedro Caixinha.

Berg has been out of work since leaving Videoton earlier this year when he lost out on the Hungarian title to Honved on the final day of the season.

But the 48-year-old enjoyed success previously with Legia Warsaw where he won the title and the Polish Cup in almost two years in charge.

Berg was in charge of Legia Warsaw when they thrashed Celtic, under his countryman Ronny Deila, 6-1 on aggregate in a Champions League qualifer.

Is a 'Rangers man' what's needed to bring back success at Ibrox?

But the Poles were thrown out of the competition after it emerged they fielded an ineligble player during the second leg at Murrayfield.

Berg would love another crack at the Hoops as manager of the Rangers after the Light Blues board invited applications.

It’s understood the Ibrox side would prefer a British boss with Derek McInnes still the hot favourite to succeed Caixinha.

However, Berg has thrown his hat into the ring after Rangers released a statement last week saying they were in no rush and that they would consider all applicants.

Berg signed for the Ibrox side in August 2003 after 10 years in England where he became the first player to win the Premier League with two clubs, Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United.

He was part of Alex Ferguson’s historic 1999 Treble-winning squad at Old Trafford, albeit injury ruled him out of the FA Cup and Champions League finals.

Berg made 30 appearances for Rangers but his time at Ibrox ended on a sour note after he accused Alex McLeish of pandering to Dick Advocaat by playing Frank de Boer.

Rangers new boss can add an extra dimension to the Gers attack by resurrecting Michael O'Halloran's Ibrox career

De Boer was signed on loan from Galatasaray and needed games ahead of the Euro 2004 with McLeish’s Gers predecessor then in charge of Holland.

Berg said at the time: “I don’t mind competition, but when there are other reasons than the performances on the pitch, it is just hopeless.

“I came to Rangers to win something and to play games. I thought the most important thing for Rangers was to win, not to do Frank de Boer a favour.”

The former Norwegian international, capped 100 times for his country, started his managerial career in his homeland with Lyn and Lillestrom before a return to Ewood Park where he became a casualty of the Lancashire club’s controversial Venky’s owners after just 57 days in charge.

I don’t think he’d be any better than McInnes really.

He’d be cheaper I guess, and maybe spotted a few Eastern Europeans/ Scandinavians.

Not sure how much truth is in this, but if it’s true then he should be given SERIOUS consideration. (Given the names linked so far)

His time at Blackburn was just horrendous whether that was down to him or the owners I don’t know but I wouldn’t want him.

I forgot he was ever in charge at Blackburn. Just checked there and he won 1 game in 10 before getting sacked.

I don’t know anything about his managerial career other than Blackburn, but it’s unfair to judge anyone on a stint there under venky’s. Look where the club is now. Anyone would fail there

No quotes, no insider comments, nothing worth reading in this article.... although the completely random reference about, “Michael O'Halloran's Ibrox career“ provides a laugh.

Given where Blackburn are now I don't think the whole blame of that can be laid at Berg's door.

The below is from Wikipedia. He knew the score when he took the job on so he has to take at least some of the blame.

While working as a pundit for Norwegian TV, Berg had made a withering assessment of Blackburn Rovers' owners, Venky's. He said: "There are no real managers with credibility who would accept a job like that."[13] On 31 October 2012, Blackburn Rovers announced that Berg had accepted an offer for a three-year contract to manage the club.[3]

His Legia Warsaw side that pumped the bheasts were a joy to watch . . . that aside, I don't feel he's the right fit for us right now.

The drama queen effect.
The “noooooooooooo”, the “no, just no” lovers will be along as well.
No reasoning, no justifying, just “no” and maybe “he’s not won the CL so he’s not good enough”.
Berg is a better candidate than a lot of those already mentioned.

Well he has beaten tic twice as manager of Legia so thats a plus.

Good player who has had some success as a manger. I would not be unhappy if he got the job.

I'm sure someone on here either started a thread or mentioned Berg in a comment.

Probably randomly plucked from here as usual.

To think there is Journalists being paid and they are sifting through FF for stories, sad acts.

Where the feck did this bit come from ?

"Rangers new boss can add an extra dimension to the Gers attack by resurrecting Michael O'Halloran's Ibrox career".

It seems to me that anyone is fair game in the eyes of the Phress these days.... We should be VERY wary of any manager that the likes of Tom English or Hugh Keevins, Graham Spiers etc state is the "right man for the job"..... they have their own aghenda, the SMSM have been behind our troubles, they have stirred the shit, they have demonised our club AND our fans.

Take everything you hear and read with a pinch of salt.

Cos I won't be a puppet for james blair or club1872 until they start giving us fans what we want.

Be yourself...
